Abstract

291,844. Jackson, A. H. March 3, 1927. Springs, arrangement of; adjusting height of body from ground; axle attachments; equalizing load on springs and wheels.-In a spring suspension system for motor vehicles having all the suspension springs interconnected for equalizing the load thereon, the springs are mounted on the axles so as to permit longitudinal and transverse rocking movements on the axles. The axle attachments may comprise journal, ball, &c. bearings with some capacity for self alignment or self aligning bearings of known form such as shown in Fig. 7 may be used. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the front ends of the rear springs 2, 4 are pivoted to the frame and their rear ends are connected by shackles 24, 25 to ball-crank levers 20, 21 pivoted on the frame 5 and connected by adjustable rods 17, 18 to bell-crank levers 13, 14 connected to the rear ends of the front springs 1, 3. The front ends of the springs 1, 3 are connected by shackles to oppositely directed arms 8, 10 on a shaft 9 mounted to rotate in bearings on the frame. The shackles at the ends of the springs may be arranged in tension instead of in compression as shown, and the front ends of the rear springs may be connected to the bell-cranks instead of the rear ends. In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 6, the crossconnection between the front ends of the front springs 1, 3 comprises shafts 27, 28 universally jointed to shafts 33 - - 36 mounted on the frame and arranged in pairs geared together by pinions 37 - - 40. The arms 8, 10 to which the springs are connected, both extend forwardly and are fixed on the shafts 34, 35. Stabilizing springs 44, 45 are mounted on the rod 41 connecting the front and rear bell-crank levers 14, 21, the springs being mounted between an abutment 48 on the frame and abutments 46, 47 on the rod. In the further modification shown in Fig. 8, the front cross-connection comprises a transverse lever 50 pivoted to the frame at 51 and connected by ball-ended links 53 to the arms 8, 10. The Provisional Specification also describes an arrangement in which the spring system on one side of the vehicle is independent of that on the other, the front crossconnection being omitted.
