Abstract

282,125. Law, C. July 19, 1926. Two-stroke-cycle engines: driving-gear. - In engines with two pistons working with a common combustion chamber, two sets of inlet transfer and exhaust ports are provided each piston controlling one set.. The pistons, as shown in Fig. 1 drive on to two crank shafts a, b and are so set that at the time of ignition the piston f is 45‹ beyond its inner dead centre and the piston f<1> 45‹ behind the dead centre; as a consequence the pistons move together for a part of the cycle and in opposite directions for the remainder. The two shafts as shown are connected by a chain to rotate in the same direction, but they may rotate in opposite directions in which case the angles of advance and retardation with respect to the time of ignition are 75‹ and 15‹ respectively. The piston f controls the inlet l for air to the crank casa and the transfer and exhaust ports k<2>, n; the piston f<1> controls the mixture admission port m to the crank case j<1> and the transfer and exhaust ports k<3>, n<1>. If desired mixture may also be supplied from the crank case j. In a modification having two cylinders h<1>, h<2>, Fig. 2 with their axes parallel to a shaft p between them, the four piston f, f<1> driving the shaft through two swash plates a<2>, a<3> set at an angle to one another, the ends of the cylinders remote from the combustion chambers are closed and used as the pre-compression chambers for air and mixture. The ports are controlled as described with reference to Fig. 1.
