Abstract
280,019. Ragan, F. H. Oct. 14, 1926. Band; blocks and the like acting on drums; force-transmitting mechanism; compensating for wear. - Actuating mechanism for brakes on steering wheels of vehicles comprises a member substantially parallel with and extending along the axle and having a portion which is fixed relatively to the member in the direction of its length and is adapted to exert a pushing action on the brake shoes when the member is moved longitudinally of the axle. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the actuating member 26 carries an adjustable ball-shaped portion 25 which engages inclined semi-cylindrical recesses 22, 23 in wear plates 20, 21 secured on the brake shoes 10, 11, the ball 25 being normally in line with the steering pivot. The anchored ends of the brake shoes abut against pins 12, 13, Figs, 3 and 6, slotted to engage a tapered plate 14 adjustably mounted in the brake plate 19. The shoes are held in the off position by a coil spring 28 and by a flat spring 29 carried by the brake plate 19. The member 26, which is supported at its outer end by its engagement with the brake shoes, is connected at its inner end to one arm of a three armed lever 81 the other arms of which are connected to the actuating member 26<1> of the brake on the other steering wheel and to a rod 84 which may be connected to a brake pedal. The lever 81 is mounted on a bracket 82 on the axle and by means of a pin-and-slot connection so that the pull on the members 26, 26' is equalized. In the modified equalizing arrangement shown in Fig. 11, the rods 26, 26<1> are connected to levers 96, 96<1> pivoted to an axle bracket 97 and having pin-and-slot, connections 100, 100<1> with a bar 101 connected to the operating rod 102. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the actuating member 60 carries an adjustable socket-member 61 forked at its outer end to carry rollers 67 which engage recesses in wear plates 70, 71 on the brake shoes 40, 41. The anchored ends of the shoes abut against cams or eccentrics carried by a shaft which may be rotated in the brake plate for adjusting the shoes. In a further modification, the actuating member carries a pivoted wedge which engages between rollers on the ends of the brake shoes. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 12 and 13 for anchoring a modified form of brake shoes, plates 107, 107<1>, secured respectively between the ends 105, 105<1> of the shoes and plates 106, 106<1> attached thereto, have bevelled ends which engage in slots 109, 109' in discs 110, 110<1> carried on a right-and-left-hand screw-threaded bolt 120 mounted in the brake plate 125. The position of the shoes may also be adjusted by screws 111 mounted in a bracket 112 on the brake plate and having reduced portions engaged in slots in the plates 106, 106'.
