Abstract
289,482. Hahn, P. L. April 28, 1927. [Convention date]. Addition to 235,625. [Class 55 (ii), Gas manufacture &c.]. Hydrocarbons, cracking; hydrogenation, destructive; evaporating by contact with hot liquid. -Oils of low boiling point are obtained from heavy oils by vaporizing the latter by passage through a bath of molten metal, passing the vapours through a reaction chamber similar to that described in the parent Specification, and mixing the vapours with superheated steam, water gas, &c. at 350-600‹ C. The oil is supplied from a tank a<1> through a pipe n to the bottom of a bath d filled with molten lead and is deflected upwardly by a baffle c. Circulation of the molten metal is obtained through nozzles b‹ and drop pipes b<1>, b<2> which are heated to a higher temperature than the bath d. The oil vapours pass through a series of narrow passages formed by overlapping metal baffle plates f, f<1> which separate entrained metal from and have a catalytic reaction on the vapours, and are then mixed with superheated steam &c. entering through sharp-edged apertures d and the mixture is passed through suction nozzles g to the condensers. Steam may be admitted through a pipe k to remove carbon formed on the surface of the molten metal.
