Abstract

287,592. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., Twiss, D. L., and Murphy, E. A. Oct. 21, 1926. Centrifugal machines; moulding indiarubber tubes. - Tubes of rubber &c. are formed by applying solutions or aqueous dispersions of the materials to the interior of a rotating cylinder formed by the convolutions of an endless helically-wound flexible band 1 which is kept in motion by the frictional engagement of rotating cable members 3 driven from a shaft 10 through annular rings 6 and pinions 7. The members 3 are supported by stationary supports 4 which are adjustable by means of slots 5 so that the members 3 are at right-angles to the turns of the band 1. Two complementary cylinders oppositely-driven may be arranged as shown so that the band 1 when reaching the end of one cylinder is wound back by way of the other, intermediate guide rollers 11, 12 which may be independently driven being provided. The material is fed into the cylinder by an inclined tray 13 formed with a curved front distribution plate 16, Fig. 2, and pivotally mounted in a longitudinally-adjustable stirrup 18 whereby the width of the gap between the edge of the plate 16 and the wall of the cylinder may be adjusted. Coagulation, drying and vulcanization may take place during the process, and for thin materials the feed may be from a nozzle or in the form of a spray. The cylinder may be of porous material to facilitate drying.
