Abstract
287,192. British Dyestuffs Corporation, Ltd., and Coffey, S. Oct. 25, 1926. Motor spirit.-Knocking of the usual hydrocarbon fuels is reduced by addition to the liquid or to the gases in the chamber of a heavy metal derivative of a #-diketone of the type R.CO.CHR<1>.CO.R<11> where R, R<11> are hydrocarbon radicals which may also carry halogen atoms as substituents, and R<1> is either such a radical or hydrogen. Diketones specified are acetyl-acetone, benzoyl-acetone, and their alkyl aralkyl, or aryl homologues e.g. propionyl-acetone, the alkyl compounds being more readily soluble .and volatile. Metals specified are iron, nickel, cobalt, chromium, thorium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten, cerium, or other rare metal used commercially, mercury, silver and noble metals, aluminium, and zinc. Mixtures of the above, or with other antiknock compounds, or with auxiliary compounds e.g. carbon tetrachloride which reduces fouling, may be used. Many of the above compounds impart a distinctive colour to the fuel. In an example 0.1-1.0 per cent of ferric methylacetyl-acetone is added to petrol or a blend of petrol with aromatic hydrocarbons, cracked spirits, or alcohols.
