Abstract
278,193. Chamberlain & Hookham, Ltd., and James, S. Oct. 26, 1926. Electricity &c., supplying by meter; mechanism for prepaying rent of meter. - Relates to prepayment meters in which the commodity is supplied on a two part tariff or a fixed rental charge is added to the price of the commodity and in which two measuring devices, operating at a variable and a constant rate respectively, are provided. According to the invention, two interconnected epicyclic mechanisms are employed, one receiving motion from one measuring device and the coin actuated mechanism and the other from the other measuring device and the first epicyclic mechanism, together with means for actuating a switch, valve or the like. As applied to an electricity meter, a meter a, operating according to the consumption, drives one sun wheel e of an epicyclic mechanism, the other sun wheel f being driven by a coin actuated mechanism c. The planet i carried by an arm h drives through gearing j, k, l one sun wheel m of a second epicyclic mechanism, the other sun wheel n of which is driven by a metering device b operating at a constant rate, such as a constant speed motor or a clock. The wheels m, n through a planet wheel p rotate an arbor o having an arm r acting on the controlling element d of a switch releasing device, such as described in Specification 270,467. The arbor o may have a pointer s or number disc for indicating the number of prepaid coins or the value of the unconsumed commodity.
