Description

LEAKPROOF CLOSURE CAP
TECITV1(141, FIELD OT THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a leakproof closure cap. In particular, this invention relates to a leakproof closure cap that can be attached or retrofitted to a liquid container, receptacle, packaging or bottle having a disc top dispensing cap, and which prevents the disc top dispensing cap from inadvertently or accidentally opening, and the liquid contents leaking. The leakproof closure cap is dimensioned and shaped such that it is straightforward and intuitive for the consumer to utilise it to expediently dispense and seal the liquid product stored in the container.
BACKGROUND
It has been known for a number of years to contain liquid personal and body care products in containers that are closed-off by a disc top dispensing cap. Such disc top dispensing caps are known in the art and generally comprise a disc-shaped closure top that is positioned at the top of a circular lip or opening of the dispensing cap and having a pivoting point that is across the diameter of the opening. These disc top dispensing caps have two configurations. Firstly, there is an open or dispensing configuration in which a portion of the disc top is depressed such that a circumferential slot or opening formed across the disc protrudes clear of the lip or opening, and by applying force or pressure to the deformable container, the liquid product can then be dispensed through the slot or opening. Secondly, there is also a closed configuration in which the protruding portion of the disc top is pressed flat inside the circular lip or opening thereby sealing-off the circumferential slot disposed on the disc against the inside of the dispensing cap.
Whilst containers with disc top dispensing caps of this type have proven popular due to their relatively inexpensive manufacture and ease of use, they do suffer one main disadvantage in terms being susceptible to leakage. Leakage can occur because the sealing surface between the circumferential slot disposed on the disc against the inside of the dispensing cap does not always offer a tight seal This can be due to manufacturing intolerances or due to the consumer not completely resealing the disc in place after use. Any small amount of pressure being applied to the defonnable container is then enough to leak some product therethrough, and this can even occur when the container is placed in the consumer's bag or other receptacle and other items deform the container. Equally, the effects of gravity can sometimes be enough to force the disc into a partially open position with a resultant leakage of the liquid product. In addition, because of air pressure changes in the cabin of an aircraft can make gases expand, it is common for air travellers to find that their toiletries have leaked. The skilled person will appreciate that leakage of the liquid product can be frustrating and cause additional unwanted expense and inconvenience for consumers.
In order to address this problem there have been several solutions that have purported to io reduce leakage from these types of disc top dispensing caps. However, the lack of any real commercial products in the marketplace implies that these solutions described in the prior art have still not specifically addressed this significant problem KR 20130003713 U describes a lid that prevents the contents of a bottle from leakage and describes a double-lidded locking device. KR 20130003713 U describes that the lid is divided into two parts, namely a lower lid 2 and an upper lid 3 and describes that the lower lid 2 can be screwed onto the bottle 1 by lower thread 6. The upper lid 3 then screws over the lower lid 2 by upper thread 7. Of course, the invention described in KR 20130003713 U requires external connecting threads 6, 7 being positioned externally on the neck of the bottle 1 which is an extra manufacturing step and which introduces additional costs.
It is also known in the art to apply closure caps to beverage bottles to contain the product therein. EP 0 989 065 Al describes a screwed stopper 1 that fits in a carbonated beverage bottle 2. As perhaps best shown in Fig. 1 of EP 0 989 065 Al, it describes the stopper 1 can be fitted into the neck of a container 2, and wherein the tubular portion 10 of the stopper 1 is provided with a bottom thread 11 which is complementary with the threaded projections 15 provided on the inside of a cap 3. The stopper 1 has a cylindrical neck 6 that fits inside the mouth of the bottle or container 2. Clearly, the length of the cylindrical neck 6 is such that even the slightest lateral force would be sufficient to knock the stopper 1 out of the neck of the container 2.
None of the prior art documents describe a leakproof closure cap that can be reliably attached or retrofitted to a liquid container having a disc top dispensing cap without any additional components or manufacturing steps.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a leakproof closure cap that can be attached to a liquid container, receptacle, packaging or bottle having a disc top dispensing cap, and which prevents the disc top from inadvertently or accidentally opening during the manufacture, transportation, distribution and utilisation of the liquid product stored in the container. It is a further object of the present invention to provide a o leakproof closure cap that is integrally formed with the disc top dispensing cap. It is a further object of the present invention to provide a leakproof closure cap that is entirely retrofittable to any disc top dispensing cap, such that following the consumption of the liquid product, the leakproof closure cap can be removed and reused with different containers to therefore promote the circular economy and help to eliminate plastic waste.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a leakproof closure cap being dimensioned and shaped such that it is easy for the consumer to unscrew and screw parts of the leakproof closure cap from the disc top dispensing cap to safely dispense and then reseal the contents of the liquid product stored in the container. The leakproof closure cap including external patterning or knurling to enable ease of use, especially when dispensing the liquid product during bathing or showering. It is a further object of the present invention to provide a container which receives, or is integrated with, such a leakproof closure cap.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED LAIBODLIIENTS
The present invention has adopted the approach of utilising a leakproof closure cap that can be attached to a liquid container, receptacle, packaging or bottle having a disc top dispensing cap, and which prevents the disc top from inadvertently or accidentally opening during the manufacture, transportation, distribution and utilisation of the liquid product stored in the container. Advantageously, the present invention provides a leakproof closure cap that is integrally formed with the disc top dispensing cap. Further advantageously, the present invention also provides a leakproof closure cap that is entirely retrofittable to any disc top dispensing cap, such that following the consumption of the liquid product, the leakproof closure cap can be removed and reused with different containers to therefore promote the circular economy and help to eliminate plastic waste.
Further advantageously, the present invention also provides a leakproof closure cap being dimensioned and shaped such that it is easy for the consumer to unscrew and screw parts of the leakproof closure cap from the disc top dispensing cap to safely access and then reseal the contents of the liquid product stored in the container. Further advantageously, the leakproof closure cap including external patterning or knurling to enable ease of use, especially when dispensing the liquid product during bathing or showering. Further advantageously, the present invention also provides a container which receives, or is integrated with, such a leakproof closure cap.
Referring now to the drawings, a leakproof closure cap 10 according to the present invention is illustrated in Figures 1 to 6. The leakproof closure cap 10 of the present invention being attachable or retrofittable to a straight-walled disc top dispensing cap 12 located at the opening of a bottle 14, as shown in Figures 5 and 6. The disc top dispensing cap 12 is one that is known to the person skilled in the art, and comprises a disc-shaped top 56 that is positioned at the top of the disc top dispensing cap 12 and having a pivoting point that is across its diameter (not shown in the drawings for reasons of clarity).
ID The leakproof closure cap 10 comprises an annular base 16 having an external thread 18 and an inner profile 20 dimensioned to be slidably received on the outer circumference 22 of the disc top dispensing cap 12. In use, the annular base 16 is retained in place on the outer circumference 22 of the disc top dispensing cap 12 by way of a transition or interference fit. This transition or interference fit between the inner profile 20 of the annular base 16 and the outer circumference 22 of the disc top dispensing cap 12 is preferably over the full length of the disc top dispensing cap 12 to ensure a strong interconnection therebetween. More preferably, the transition or interference fit between the inner profile 20 of the annular base 16 and the outer circumference 22 of the disc top dispensing cap 12 is at least 90% of the longitudinal length of the annular base 16.
Disposed approximately mid-way along the longitudinal length of the annular base 16 towards a first end proximal to the opening of the bottle 14 when in use, the external thread 18 adjoins a knurled collar 24 which has a circumferential bearing or mating face 26 which abuts against a corresponding circumferential bearing or mating face 28 disposed on a threaded lid 30, as will be described in further detail below.
Disposed generally at the end distal to the opening of the bottle 14 when in use, the opposite second end of the annular base 16 is formed having an annular opening 32, as best shown in Figure 1. Formed in the annular opening 32 is a detent 34 which is used to acuate the disc top dispensing cap 12 by depressing a recess or detent 36 in the circular face of the disc top 56 such that a circumferential slot or opening 40 formed across the disc 56 protrudes clear of the lip or opening of the dispensing cap 12 and annular opening 32 (shown in Figure 4), and by applying force or pressure to the deformable bottle 14, the liquid product can then be dispensed through such slot or opening 40.
There is also a closed position in which the protruding half of the disc 56 is pressed flat inside the dispensing cap 12 and annular opening 32 which thereby seals-off the circumferential slot 40 disposed on the disc top 56 against the inside of the dispensing cap 12. However, as described earlier, disc top dispensing caps 12 of this type are prone to leaking In order to address this problem, the leakproof closure cap 10 also includes a threaded lid 30 that has an internal thread 42 that that meets with the external thread 18 on the io annular base 16. When the threaded lid 30 is fully screwed on by hand, a blind bore 44 having an abutment surface 46 formed inside the threaded lid 30 (as shown in Figure 4) abuts against the disc top 56 to prevent it inadvertently opening It is the threaded engagement of the threaded lid 30 with the annular base 16 causing the circumferential mating faces 26, 28 to abut and thereby provide a leakproof seal therebetvveen.
Towards the meeting face 28 positioned on lowermost part of the threaded lid 30 is a series of crosshatching or knurling 48 that allows the threaded lid 30 to be screwed on, and off, the annular base 16, easily as required, even in wet environments if the bottle 14 is used during bathing or showering, for example. The knurling 48 on the threaded lid 30 and the knurled collar 24 on the annular base 16 are especially advantageous when the leakproof closure cap 10 is used with a bottle 14 containing products such as essential oil compositions, and which are notoriously prone to product leakage The size and position of the textured knurling patterns 24, 48 on the leakproof closure cap 10 promotes a good grip strength and hand-closing torque which, in use, ensures that the circumferential mating faces 26, 28 abut to reliably provide a leakproof seal.
As best shown in Figure 3, the opposite end of the annular base 16 includes a cut-out 50 which receives an annular retaining ring 52 which is co-moulded from the threaded lid and which seats under the annular base 16 and which prevents the threaded lid 30 from being lost when in use. Alternatively, the annular retaining ring 52 can be detached from the annular base 16, and instead seat under the annular base 16 around the neck of the bottle 14.
The threaded lid 30 also has a chamfered edge 54 to prevent sharp edges.
In a preferred embodiment, the leakproof closure cap 10 is formed from a polymer such as High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE). Alternatively, the leakproof closure cap 10 can be formed from a polymer such as Polypropylene (PP), Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) or blends thereof Equally, the skilled person will appreciate that the leakproof closure cap 10 can be formed from any number of synthetic plastics or io rubberised materials, such as a thermoplastic or thermoset material. The above list is no way intended to be limiting or exhaustive.
The leakproof closure cap 10 may also be formed from a biobased polymer or a bioplastics material obtained from renewable biomass sources, such as, but not limited to, any of the following: vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, sawdust, recycled food waste and the like.
The leakproof closure cap 10 can be manufactured using techniques such as injection moulding, blow moulding, vacuum forming, rotational moulding, compression 20 moulding, rim moulding, powder impression moulding or any other form of plastics or rubber manufacture, as additive manufacturing or 3D printing.
The skilled person will appreciate that different variations or densities of materials could also be provided The leakproof closure cap 10 can be supplied in a number of different colours.
The leakproof closure cap 10 may also contain silver ion technology. In order to diminish the risk of the build-up or transfer of germs or bacteria, an antimicrobial additive, such as silver ions, could be admixed with the polymer forming the leakproof closure cap 10.
In a preferred embodiment, the textured knurling patterns 24, 48 can be formed on the annular base 16 and the threaded lid 30 by ensuring that the injection moulding tool includes a textured finish. The inner profile 20 of the annular base 16 is however moulded with a smooth surface to reduce friction and to aid engagement with the outer circumference 22 of the disc top dispensing cap 12 by way of a transition or interference fit.
The use of the present invention will now be described: 1) After the contents of the bottle 14 are filled at a primary manufacturing facility or later at a secondary manufacturing facility, or later retrofitted by a third party, the leakproof closure cap 10 can be slidably received on the outer circumference 22 of the disc top dispensing cap 12. The leakproof closure cap 10 then being held in place by way of a transition or interference fit such that no matter how much pressure or deformation is applied to the bottle 14, the pivoting disc top 56 is unable to rotate, meaning that the product contained in the bottle 14 cannot inadvertently or accidentally leak. In addition, the threaded engagement of the threaded lid 30 with the annular base 16 causes the circumferential mating faces 26, 28 to abut and thereby provide a leakproof seal therebetween. Such a configuration being shown in Figure 5, 2) When the product is to be consumed, the threaded lid 30 is then removed from the annular base 16. When fully screwed off by hand, the consumer is then able to depress the recess or detent 36 in the circular face of the disc top 56 so that the liquid product is able to be dispensed out of the slot 40 in the disc top 56. Such a configuration being shown in Figure 6.
3) To reseal the contents of the liquid product stored in the bottle 14, the threaded lid 30 is then fully screwed back on to the annular base 16 4) This process is then repeated as the product is consumed, and after consumption of the product, the skilled person will understand that the bottle 14 and leakproof closure cap 10 can then be separated by pulling the leakproof closure cap 10 clear of the neck of the bottle 14 by overcoming the transition or interference fit therebetween, and each item can then be disposed, or preferably recycled or reused.
Therefore, the use of the leakproof closure cap 10 according to the present invention is a simple but effective way of preventing a disc top dispensing cap 12 from inadvertently or accidentally opening and leaking liquid product therethrough.
Figure 7 shows a second embodiment of the leakproof closure cap 10. The construction of the second embodiment is very similar to that of the first embodiment and corresponding features have been given the same reference numerals. The second embodiment differs from the first embodiment in that instead of being attached or retrofitted to the disc top dispensing cap 12 on the bottle 14, the leakproof closure cap 10 is integrally formed with the disc top dispensing cap 12 to provide a leakproof disc top dispensing cap 100. In this embodiment of the invention, as shown in Figure 7, the external thread 18, knurled collar 24 and circumferential bearing or mating face 26 are disposed on the outer annular profile of the disc top dispensing cap 12. As described previously, the external thread 18 then meets with the internal thread 42 of the threaded lid 30 to provide a leakproof seal therebetween.
The use of the second embodiment of the invention will now be described: 1) After the contents of the bottle 14 are filled at a primary manufacturing facility, the leakproof disc top dispensing cap 100 is then secured to the neck of the bottle 14. The leakproof disc top dispensing cap 100 being held in place by way of a threaded engagement around the neck of the bottle 14. The threaded engagement of the threaded lid 30 with the external thread 18 on the disc top dispensing cap 12 causes the circumferential mating faces 26, 28 to abut and thereby provide a leakproof seal therebetween. No matter how much pressure or deformation is applied to the bottle 14, the pivoting disc top 56 is unable to rotate, meaning that the product contained in the bottle 14 cannot inadvertently or accidentally leak.
2) When the product is to be consumed, the threaded lid 30 is then removed from the disc top dispensing cap 12. When fully screwed off by hand, the consumer is then able to depress the recess or detent 36 in the circular face of the disc top 56 so that the liquid product is able to be dispensed out of the slot 40 in the disc top 56. Such a configuration being shown in Figure 7.
3) To reseal the contents of the liquid product stored in the bottle 14, the threaded lid 30 is then fully screwed back on to the disc top dispensing cap 12.
