Abstract
268,120. Berkel & Parnall's Slicing Machine Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Thomas, H. March 13, 1926. Cutting slices in succession. - In slicing- machines, a slice deflector of the type which is turnable into, and out of, its operative position, is characterized by its being so constructed and mounted that the pressure of the slices on its edge does not turn the deflector away from its cperative position, but tends to increase the locking engagement between it and its support. It is preferably arranged so that, in order to turn the deflector to its inoperative position, it is first necessary to move the deflector forwardly relative to its support. As shown in plan in Fig. 3, the deflector 1 is carried by a supporting member 3 fixed on a bracket 4 in which the knife is journaled. The member 3 is formed with top and bottom forwardly extending lugs 5 each having an arcuate slot 7 engaged by pins carried on lugs 10 on the inside of the deflector plate, one pin being removable from its lug 10. In the middle of the length of the support 3 is arranged a forwardly projecting resilient (e.g. spring steel) tongue 12 carrying a block 13 having an aperture 14. The deflector 1 is provided on its inner side with a forwardly projecting tongue 15 carrying a pin 16 which engages the aperture 14. As shown in Fig. 3, the deflector is in the operative position, the pin 16 being in the aperture 14 and the pins 8 at the ends of the slots 7 which may be slightly set back at 7'. The pins 8 are retained in the set back portions 7<1> by the stress of the spring tongues 12. To swing the deflector out of operation it is first necessary to move it bodily forward, using a finger hole 17, to disengage the pin 16 when it can be swung on the pivot pins 8. In modifications, the pins 8 are adjustable in slots in the lugs 10 to adjust the inclination of the deflector and to control the force tending to lock the deflector, or the inclination may be controlled by set screws in the deflector bearing against the bracket 4, or by a wedge piece which is adjustably secured between the rear of the deflector and the bracket. The slot 7 may be straight. In the operative position, the rear of the deflector overlaps the bracket 4 thereby preventing ingress of scraps &c. In the modification shown in plan in Figs. 11, 13, the bracket 3, which is adjustable in inclination by grub screws 43, has upper and lower coaxial sockets 31 each having a relatively rotatable spring clip liner 33 having a gap to allow the passage of keys 34, preferably formed with rounded edges, carried by upper and lower lugs 35 on the inner surface of the deflector 1. The sockets 31 are each formed with a recess 37 in which the keys 34 rest when the deflector is in operation, the front edges of the keys entering the gaps in the spring liners 33 and locking the deflector against angular movements. To swing the deflector, it is pulled forwardly, the keys 34 passing completely into the spring liners, Fig. 13, whereby the deflector is released for movements. Stops 38, 39 are arranged to prevent the deflector from being moved against the knife when the deflector is out of operation. Cover plates are arranged on the sockets to prevent the ingress of grit to the liners 33. To facilitate the removal of the deflector, slots 41 are cut in the sockets through which the keys 34 pass.
