Abstract

253,356. Fraser, L. M. June 8, 1925. Pneumatic separating. - Street or house refuse is sorted into its parts according to weight in an apparatus comprising a rotating cylinder 2 to which the refuse is fed and in which it is stirred up and subjected to a current, of air which carries the lighter elements into a sorting chamber 7 provided with a series of collecting hoppers 12 - - 15. The cylinder has a series of longitudinal ribs 3, stirring blades 4 and prongs 4<1> by which the material is lifted and dropped in a continuous shower across the cylinder and also fed to its discharge end. The sorting chamber contains a series of curtains or screens 8 - - 11, some or all of which may be adjustable in position, to assist in the separation. The heavy materials such as bricks, metal &c. are guided into the hopper 12 by curtain 8 and deflector plate 9. The lighter material is arrested by the screen 10, which may be in the form of a rotary sieve, the large paper and cardboard falling into the hopper 13 and lighter paper &c. being carried over and deposited in the hopper 14. The screen 11 is in the form of a lattice structure or of parallel bars and arrests small paper and deposits it in the hopper 14. The small refuse and dust is collected in the hopper 15.
