Production of metal. - A method of making glasses containing barium consists in using barium silicate, which has been produced directly from barium sulphate, as a batch material. The barium silicate is made by heating a mixture of 100 parts of finely ground heavy spar and 13 parts of quartz sand in a revolving furnace to a temperature of about 1200 C., and introducing steam. The resulting product is free from sulphuric acid, is easily sintered, and has a high content of barium oxide. A suitable batch for glass making consists of 100 parts of sand, 26 parts of calcined soda, 15 parts of calcium carbonate, and 34 parts of the barium silicate.
