Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank of a support structure for an item of food packaging made in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a first side an item of food packaging comprising a bag and the support structure of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a second side the item of food packaging of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the item of food packaging of Figures 2 and 3 illustrating the primary opening of the bag
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the first side of the item of food packaging of Figures 2 to 4 in a second configuration in which the primary opening is closed;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the second side of the item of food packaging of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a plan view of a second embodiment of an item of food packaging of the present invention wherein the bag and the support structure of the first embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 6 are provided with perforations.
Referring to figures 1 to 6 and a first embodiment of the present invention there is provided an item of food packaging 1 having a cardboard support structure 2 and a paper bag 3.
Support structure 2 comprises a first pair of opposing side panels 4a, 4b, a second pair of opposing side panels 5a, 5b, a base 6 and an attachment portion 7.
Cardboard support structure 2 is attached to paper bag 3 by means of adhesive between paper bag 3 and side panels 5a, 5b.
First pair of opposing side panels 4a, 4b are of substantially the same rectangular dimensions and each comprise a central hinge 8a, 8b.
Second pair of opposing side panels 5a, 5b are of substantially the same rectangular dimensions.
Base 6 comprises a substantially central hinge 14.
Side panels 4a, 5a and 4b aqre linearly arranged in that side panel 4a is foldably hinged to the side panel 5a by arcuate fold line 9, side panel 5a is foldably hinged to side panel 4b by arcuate fold line 10, and side panel 4b is foldably hinged to attachment portion 7 by arcuate fold line 11.
Side panel 5a is also foldably hinged to base 6 perpendicularly to side panels 4a and 4b by arcuate fold line 12. Base 6 is foldably hinged to side panel 5b by arcuate fold line 13
Attachment portion 7 comprises hooked projection 15, which is configured to releasably mate with each of openings 16 on side panel 5b.
When attachment portion 7 is connected to side panel 5b side panels 4b, 5b, 4a, 5a form a loop that encircles bag 3.
In the present embodiment cardboard support structure 2 is attached to paper bag 3 at a such that hinge 14 of base 6 is substantially aligned with a sealed edge 17 of bag 3 that is substantially perpendicular to the primary opening 18 of bag 3.
Paper bag 3 comprises a perforated linear line of weakness 19 that extends through both faces of the bag adjacent but spaced from cardboard support structure 2. In the present embodiment line of weakness 19 is positioned such that two separate parts of bag 3 of roughly similar dimensions are defined on each side of line of weakness 19.
Item of food packaging 1 may be provided to a user in a flat packed configuration as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3.
In its flat packed configuration of first pair of side panels 4a, 4b of item of food packaging 1 are folded at hinges 8a, 8b and base 6 is folded at hinge 14.
As illustrated in Figure 4, from its flat packed configuration a user may apply pressure to the base so as to alter it into a concave formation such that second pair of opposing side panels 5a, 5b are spaced apart from each other. The user may then readily access opening 18 of paper bag 3 and place foodstuffs within paper bag 3.
Once foodstuffs have been placed in bag 3 a user may then close primary opening 18 of bag 3 by entering item of food packaging 1 from into its second configuration wherein attachment portion 7 is connected to side panel 5b and side panels 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b of cardboard support structure 2 are in a substantially rectangular configuration.
Item of food packaging 1 is maintained in this position by hooked projection 15 engaging with openings 16.
Critically, in order that item of food packaging 1 may readily enter its second configuration, a pair of lower openings 20a, 20b are formed between the edges of base 6 and first pair of side panels 4a, 4b such that portions 21a, 21b of bag 3 may project through openings 20a, 20b.
In the present embodiment openings 20a, 20b are formed owing to the width of base 6 at hinge 14 being less than the width of second pair of side panels 5a, 5b adjacent base 6. to reduce the width of base 6 at its hinge the edges of base 6 are V-shaped.
In other embodiments other shapes of base edges may be adopted, or the edges may be linear but the whole base may be of less width than the side panels.
A user is able to remove a portion of paper bag 3 by tearing along line of weakness 19 so as to allow access to food held within bag 3.
Turning to a second embodiment of the present invention as illustrated in Figure 7 an item of food packaging 22 comprises a cardboard support structure 23 and a bag that are structurally identical to those of the first embodiment.
However, bag 24 is provided with a plurality of spaced-apart apertures in the form of perforations 25 distributed across the majority of its surface area.
Perforations 25 allow moisture to escape from bag 24.
Similarly support structure 23 comprises a plurality of spaced-apart apertures in the form of perforations 26 distributed across the majority of its surface area.
Importantly, by providing support structure 23 with perforations moisture released from bag 24 behind support structure 23 may be vented so as to prevent support structure 23 from becoming moist and weakened.
Although specific embodiments of the invention have been described it will be apparent that many other variations may be possible.
For example, a support structure may be positioned with its base at an edge of a bag that is parallel to and opposing the opening of the bag. In such embodiments the support structure may have no attachment portion to releasably connect together adjacent side panels. Instead side panels in such embodiments may be substantially permanently attached together in a loop that encircles the bag.
Lines of weakness may be provided by perforations or other suitable means such as scores or tear strips.
Although in the present embodiments the bag is formed of paper and the support structure has been formed of cardboard it will be apparent that any other suitable materials may be used such as plastic film and corrugated flute.
Many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the present invention as defined in the appended claims.
