Abstract
A cable tie having two locking heads 1 at opposing ends of the tie, and a racked gripping surface 2 along the length of the tie. The rack may be on one or both faces of the zip tie. In use, the cable tie is cut to the length required, with the cut end then fed through the appropriate locking head as in a conventional zip tie. The second cut part can also be used as a functioning zip tie. The ratchet heads may face in opposite directions. The cable tie cannot be used in the manufactured state until it has been cut in two.
Description
Double ended cable tie
This invention relates generally to cable ties and there accessories. A cable tie also known as a zip tie or tie wrap is a mechanical fastener used in a wide range of industries to group together cables in a efficient and tidy array.
However the conventional cable tie has its disadvantages. In general usage, the cable tie is wrapped around a number of loose objects, The tail end is inserted into a locking mechanism through a void in its single head, then pulled together tightly to fix, hold down or join the objects together. The excess length from the head to the tail is then cut off and disposed of resulting in most cases a very high percentage of waste that will most probably end up in landfill. There is also an element of danger in that a child or person could harm or seriously injure themselves resulting in death by using the cable tie inappropriately as there is no safety barrier to prevent this.To overcome these problems the present invention proposes a way of reducing the wastage and making the cable tie a safer product if it was to fall into uncapable hands.
The way in which to cut down on the wastage will be provided by adding a second head in place of the tail to the cable tie,the result being a second cable tie being produced after it has been cut to length using an appropiate tool.
The reduced risk safety factor is provided by adding the second head to the cable tie, this renders the cable tie unusable in its manufacured state, reducing the risk of injury or death if in unsuitable hands.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with references to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the proposed double ended cable tie with the tail removed and a second head in its place.
Figure 2 shows a cutaway view showing a symetrical rack or appropiate gripping surface on just one face.
Figure 3 shows the cable tie in use once a cut has been made.
Figure 4 shows the second cable tie in use with what would have been waste on the conventional cable tie.
Figure 5 shows a alternative double ended cable tie with opposite facing heads.
Figure 6 shows a side view of the double ended cable tie with opposite facing heads 1.
Figure 7 shows a isometric cut away view of the one way rack 3 situated on each of the faces and running in opposite directions.
Figure 8 shows a hidden detail view of the one way rack 3 on each face and running in opposite directions.
Figure 1 shows the proposed double ended cable tie with two heads that contain locking mechanism 1, a two way symmetrical rack or gripping surface 2 so that not to slip in either direction . The cable tie cannot be used in this manufactured state until it has been cut with a appropiate tool. This renders it safe until its used for its intended purpose .
Figure 3 shows one end of the cable tie in use once the cut has been made
Figure 4 shows the opposite end of the cable tie being used for its said purpose, This end of the cable tie in most cases is no longer wastage .
Figure 6 shows a further alternative inbodiment in which the two heads that contain the locking mechanism 1, are positioned facing opposite each other. The one way rack 3 is located on both sides of the cable tie in opposite directions, this provides a one way ratchet system to both heads 1. Once cut the racks will be inserted into there mating head.
Claims (4)
1. A double ended cable tie consisting of two useable heads that contain locking mechanisms, and a rack system that when cut and inserted will enable each end to clamp with the same force and without slip .
2. A double ended cable tie consisting of two heads according to claim 1, and symetrical rack.
3. A double ended cable tie consisting of two heads according to claim 1, in which the heads face opposite directions and the rack is double sided and also running in opposite directions.
4. A double ended cable tie consisting of two heads according to claim 1, and a surface that can be gripped in either direction.
