Abstract
254,796. Dolbear, S. H., and Selective Treatment Co., Ltd. April 8, 1925. Asbestos is separated from its ore by reducing the latter in a liquid medium to such an extent that the asbestos fibres are separated from the rock but are not completely separated from one another, the quantity of liquid being sufficient to carry away the asbestos in suspension from the rock. The reduction is preferably effected in a ball-mill containing a subnormal number of balls. The discharge from the mill is passed first through a ¢ inch screen and then through a separator, over the discharge weir of which a suspension containing all the fibre and some sand passes, while coarser material is retained and mav be re-treated. The longer fibres are removed from the suspension by a 20-mesh screen, and the liquid is then passed to a battery of settling-cones which retain the sand while the fine asbestos fibres are recovered from the overflow by filtration. The long and the short fibres are separately dried in as compact a condition as possible, and when dry the fibres are completely separated by passage through a horizontal cylinder with heating arms. The final product is separated into grades in the usual manner.
