Abstract

A drink fortified with key nutrients to be consumed before, during and after pregnancy. The drink will contain ispaghula husk (fibre component), folic acid, calcium, vitamin C and iron. Consumption of this product will help women to achieve recommended dietary intakes and subsequently optimise the health status of the mother and baby. The formulation will be devised to help alleviate symptoms that reduce quality of life during and after pregnancy.

Description

PATENT APPLICATION

Title: Functional food Background: This invention relates to the formulation of a fortified drink that can be consumed before, during and after pregnancy.

Research shows that women are not consuming the correct proportions are nutrients from the diet during this important phase of the life cycle. Studies also suggest that the use of dietary supplements is infrequent and generally only recommended in women that are experiencing deficiency side effects or only consumed by those that are nutritionally aware'. An inadequate dietary intake can therefore affect both the health of the mother and the baby.

Fortification of a tasty drink will help to ensure that women are consuming the correct balance of nutrients both throughout and after pregnancy (when nutrition reserves become depleted).

This drink will also help to alleviate some of the unfavourable side-effects experienced during this time i.e. sickness, constipation and iron-deficiency anaemia.

Statement of invention: To help women to achieve dietary recommendations. The present invention proposes a drink that is enriched with key nutrients to help optimise maternal and infant health.

Advantages: * Tasty and convenient. Just one drink per day, or when women are feeling run-down, tired or low.

* The product can be consumed before, throughout or after pregnancy to replenish nutrient reserves.

* Ispaghula husk, a form of fibre will help to promote healthy bowel movements throughout pregnancy.

* The drink will be a carefully formulated product that contains 5 nutrients vital for both mother and baby.

* Nutrients from the drink will be easily absorbed by the body.

* Careful formulation means the product does not contain vitamin A, or any chemicals that may affect the health of the mother or child.

* This product will help women to meet daily nutritional requirements during one of the most important phases of the life-cycle.

Introduction to drawings:

Not applicable.
