Abstract

A divan bed comprises component parts that are removably secured together so as to be readily transported and / or stored (e.g. flat packed). The component parts comprise a base (which may be made up of slats 10), end 12, 14 and side panels 16, 18, 20, 22, legs 2, castors or slides, and a cover 24, 26 which envelopes or covers the component parts when the component parts are assembled to form a divan bed. The side panels may be formed in at least two sections. The base may include plurality of springs. The component parts may be removably securable by means of brackets or clips. The legs may comprise recesses or grooves for securing to the side panels.

Description

DIVAN BEDS

This invention relates to divan beds and more particularly to divan beds which are capable of being easily and readily assembled and disassembled for the purposes of transportation and/or storage.

It is often the case when a new bed is purchased -particularly in the case of a double bed, king-size bed, or queen-size bed -that one has to await and pay for the bed to be delivered, and it is thought that if the bed could be bought as a flat-pack' and assembled at the point of use, it could be easily transported, even in the smallest of saloon cars.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a divan bed comprising of a plurality of component parts which are arrangeable in a flat-pack' condition for ease of transportation and/or storage and which are removably securable together so as to form said divan bed, said component parts including a base, end and side panels, and legs, castors or slides, and a cover ad'pted to envelop or cover said component parts when assembled.

Pieferably, said side panels will each be formed in at least two sections which are adapted to be located end-to-end when the component parts are assembled to form the divan bed.

In order that the invention may be more readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example only, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of the component parts of a divan bed according to the invention; Figure 2 is a top perspective view of a divan bed formed from some of the component parts shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is an underneath view on Figure 2; Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the completed divan bed, and Figure 5 is an underneath perspective view on Figure 4.

Referring to the drawings, and firstly to Figure 1, the component parts to make a dismantlable divan bed -in the case illustrated, a double divan bed, a king-size divan bed or a queen-size divan bed -coiiipnses end support members 2,2A and 4,4A, a central support member 6, mattress supporting laths or slats 8 and 10, end panels 12 and 14, and side panels 16,18 and 20,22. Fabric top cover panels are indicated by reference numerals 24 and 26.

The end support member 2 consists of a top section 2B and legs 2C, 2D, and the end support member 2A consists of a top section 2E and legs 2F,2G. Similarly, the end support member 4 consists of a top section 4B and legs 4C,4D, and the end support member 4A consists of a top section 4E and legs 4F,4G.

Each of the legs of the end supports, on its outer facing surfaces, carries one half of a bracket or clip, a number of these being indicated by reference numerals 30, the other halves of the brackets or clips carried by the panels 12 to 22, although such other halves are not shown in Figure 1. The brackets or clips are of the sliding engagement type so that one half is releasable from the other.

The end support members 2,2A and 4,4A, central support member 6, matlress supporting laths or slats 8 and 10, as well as the end and side panels 12 to 22, are all preferably made of timber, although all of these could conveniently and easily be made from a synthetic plastics material.

To constnict a divan bed from the component parts illustrated in Figure 1,theendsuppoitmembers2Aand4AarC0fledt0thece1 support member 6, whereafter the end support members 2 and 4 are located at the correct spacings from the members 2A and 4A and the laths or slats 8 and 10 are placed on the support members as shown.

Although not shown in the drawings, the top sections of the end support members are provided with a series of holes or apertures and the laths or slats 8 and 10 are provided with projecting pegs or pins which engage in said holes or apertures to maintain the laths or slats 8 and 10 in their correct positions. In addition, the laths or slats may be provided with webbing or like material between each of the laths or slats. -5-.

The panels 12 to 22 are then clipped to the legs of the end support members so as to form the structure shown in Figures 2 and 3.

The divan bed is completed by adhesively or otherwise securing in position cover panels 24 and 26 as seen in Figures 4 and 5.

It will be seen from the drawings that the tops of the panels 12 to 22 are rounded off or chamfered so as to ensure that there are no sharp corners on the panels.

AlthoughitisshowninthedrawiflgSSeeFigUres2t0 5 -thatthe tops of the laths or slats 8 and 10 are generally level with the tops of the panels 12 to 22, it will be appreciated that the laths or slats could be set lower than the tops of the panels so that a sprung matiress could be placed on the divan bed and maintained in position by said panels.

In addition,, the divan bed may be modified in a suitable way so as to provide drawers underneath said bed.

The panels 12 to 22 could be faced with foil or covered in upholstery cloth or covered with a loose cover and attached to the bed by means of VELCRO (RTM) fasteners or in any other suitable or convenient manner, any such manner enabling the cover to be removed. The cover could be quilted, if dcsircd.

The side panels, instead of being formed in sections, could each be fonned as one-piece panels.

Instead of the panels 12 to 22 being connected to the legs of the supports by the aforementioned brackets or clips, they could be connected in simple sliding relationship by providing the legs with recesses or grooves into which the panels would be slidably inserted.

In addition, the panels 6,12, and 14, instead of being provided with legs, may be provided with castors or slides secured to said panels in order to enable the bed to be easily moved.

Finally, the bed may be provided with springs in addition to or in place of the laths or slats, so as to give added comfoit to a user of the bed, and in addition the laths or slats may be replaced by boards.
