Abstract
241,252. Nemcovsky, L. A. June 16, 1924. Type-lever machines; letter-spacing mechanism.-Escapement mechanism and ink-ribbon vibrating mechanism arranged at the rear of the type-lever segment are operated by a universal bail which is suspended from two pairs of parallel links, the escapement mechanism extending into the free space between the links. The arrangement economizes spaces and is particularly applicable to portable machines. A universal bail 42 in the path of shoulders on the type-levers is formed with arms 53, 54 suspended from two pairs 48, 49 and 51, 52 of parallel links pivoted on the arms 45, 46 of a bracket 44 which is secured to the inclined type-lever segment 27. The escapement mechanism comprises an escapement wheel 81 and fast and loose dogs 74, 75, and occupies the space between the links. The escapement mechanism is mounted on a support consisting of an angle-bar 72 secured to the carriage bed, and a plate 73 secured to the anglebar, the shaft 84 of the escapement wheel being mounted on pivots 70, 71, and the fast dog being mounted on pivots 77, 78. The escapement wheel is loose on the shaft and is coupled by a pawl 85 to a ratchet-wheel 86 on a fast pinion 79 engaging the feed-rack 80. The loose dog is pivoted at 75' to the fast dog and is actuated by a spring 74<1>, the play being limited by lugs 83, 83<1> on the fast and loose dogs. The universal bail has a cross-bar 134 provided with a lug 126 engaging an interponent 125 normally abutting on the fast dog. The type-lever segment may be secured at the sides to brackets supported by lugs on the framework. The brackets may support inkribbon spools. The framework and enclosing- plates may be made from impregnated wood or fibre. Accenting-arrangements.-The above-described interponent 125 for operating the escapement dogs is formed on a lever connected to the accenting- keys, the interponent being moved out of the path of the lug 126 when the accenting-keys are operated. Back-spacing mechanism. - The back-spacing key 87, Fig. 6, rocks a bell-crank 88 connected by a link 89 to a rocking arm 90 carrying a pivoted pawl 93 having arms 94. 95 for engaging the feed-pinion 79. When the back-spacing key is operated, the escapement-wheel is locked by a tongue 102 on a lever 100 which is rooked by a roller 98 on the arm 90. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-The ribbon vibrator 103 is carried by a lever 109 which passes between the universal bail 42 and the key-levers 22 and is formed with a member in the path of the universal bail. Preferably the lever is formed on a plate 105 which is trunnioned on a yoke 108 secured to the plate 73 and is provided with a projection engaging a nose 111 formed on the cross-bar 134 of the universal bail. To permit adjustment of the throw, the plate 105 may support a slide 112 having projections 115, 116 of different length, the slide being movable to place either projection in engagement with the nose 111, or for stencil work the slide can be set so that neither projection is in engagement. A spring co-operates with notches to retain the slide in the set position. Stop-screws 123, 124 limit the movement of the projections.
