Abstract
A submersible pump comprises a motor housing d and an impeller housing a, and a bulkhead h there between to create two separate chambers. The bulkhead may have a radial pressure release vent (i, figure 3) joining a central cavity, between a bearing and oil seal of the motor on one side and the bearing and oil seal of the impeller on the other side. The presence of the bulkhead reduces the tendency for water to enter the motor bearings or the rotor and stator which may cause failure. The pressure release vent allows water which has passed the impeller oil seal to exit the bulkhead through a drilled conduit to the exterior of the pump, and therefore not apply pressure on the motor bearings or rotor and stator.
Description
Submersible twin chamber water pump with pressure release vent
Description
Submersible water pump with twin chambers to prevent failure of motor by ingress of water The present invention relates to improvements to water pumps situated under water ("submersible" water pumps).
Existing submersible pumps, such as, for example, the submersible water pump shown in Diagram 1, comprise one chamber for both motor and pump. Such pumps are equipped with a motor housing (a) in which a mains electric motor (b) turns the single main shaft of the pump (c), which in turn runs into the second housing (d) containing the impeller (e) which pumps water by centrifugal force in through the inlet (f) and out through the outlet (g).
Water can pass unimpeded between the two housings, making the pump effectively one chamber. The motor stator is filled with oil for lubrication and heat dissipation in which the stator runs. Water under pressure when the pump is turning (typically 4 to 5 bar) tends to force its way through the oil seals of the motor shaft and into the motor, causing failure of the motor either by contamination and breakdown of the lubricant and or corrosion of the rotor and stator of the motor until they seize by friction. These factors contribute to a poor reliability record of submersible water pumps, with a failure rate of up to 5% in the first few months of use.
The invention (Diagrams 2 and 3) provides for a bulkhead (h) between the motor housing and the pump impeller housing to create two separate chambers, one for the motor and one for the pump impeller. The separation of the chambers reduces the pressure in the motor housing, and therefore at the oil seals, to the ambient water pressure in the tank, typically 0.25 bar.
I
There is greatly reduced tendency for the water to enter the bearings or rotor/stator. The performance of the bulkhead is ensured by the pressure release vent (i), a hole drilled along a radius of the circular bulkhead joining the central cavity, between the bearing and oil seal for the motor on one side and the bearing and oil seal of the impeller on the other side, to the outside of the pump. In the event of partial or total failure of the impeller oil seal, the water under pressure exits the bulkhead chamber through a small conduit drilled from the cavity to the exterior and does not apply pressure on the seal to the motor bearings and rotor/stator.
The bulkhead and the pressure release vent of this invention render the submersible pump much more reliable and enable it to be guaranteed for use over periods of years.
Other details of the submersible water pump which may or may not be incorporated into a design, such as pressure-sensitive on-demand water supply and dry-run protection, are not affected by the invention and do not form part of this application. Claim
Claims (1)
- <claim-text>What I claim is:- 1) First claim: Apparatus comprising a submersible pump provided with a bulkhead between the motor housing and the pump impeller housing, thereby creating two separate chambers, one for the motor and one for the impeller, which reduce the water pressure in the motor housing to the ambient water pressure in the tank, not the pressure on the impeller side, and which reduces the tendency for the water to enter the bearings or rotor/stator and cause the failure f the motor.</claim-text> <claim-text>2) Second claim: Apparatus according to the first claim fitted also with a pressure release vent, a hole drilled along a radius of the circular bulkhead joining the central cavity, between the bearing and oil seal for the motor on one side and the bearing and oil seal of the impeller on the other side, to the outside of the pump, in a manner in which, in the event of failure of the impeller oil seal, the water under pressure exits the bulkhead chamber through a small conduit drilled from the cavity to the exterior and does not apply pressure on the seal to the motor bearings and rotor/stator.</claim-text>
