Abstract
A ceiling rose includes a detachable section to which a light fixture can be wired. This detachable section can then be automatically extended and retracted, to and from the ceiling, by means of an electric motor E. The motor may be controlled by a switch, or by a remote control. When extended from the ceiling, the detachable section is isolated from electricity, as prongs K do not contact plates F.
Description
Extendable & Detachable Ceiling Rose This invention relates to an extendable & detachable ceiling rose.
When a person wishes to change a light fixture, they have to do so by connecting it to the mains electricity cable next to the standard ceiling rose. This can be problematic in the following ways: -Often multiple people are required to assist in order to ensure the light fixture is held in place whilst it is attached directly to the ceiling. This can prove even more difficult when the light is to be fitted to a ceiling rose on a particularly high ceiling, or a ceiling rose which has obstacles positioned below it.
-Changing a light fixture is also difficult to do for a novice with no experience in electrics and the mains electricity often needs to be turned off whilst done for safety reasons.
Whilst changing a light bulb in a light fixture is a much easier process, it is still difficult for the elderly and those with disabilities preventing them from being able to reach the light fixture or climbing up a ladder / chair.
To overcome these problems, the present invention proposes a ceiling rose which has a detachable section, and that can be extended down from the ceiling and retracted back up again by means of an electric motor.
The detachable section will enable a new light fixture to be wired directly to this section, with-out the need for the light fixture to be held up to the ceiling at the same time. It could just as easily be done whilst the light was being rested on a table.
Wiring the new light fixture to the detached section will also mean there is no need for the electricity to be turned off whilst done, as no electricity will be being sent through the detached section at that precise time -making the process much safer.
The extendable feature will enable the detachable section to be automatically lowered from the ceiling, avoiding the need to climb on a ladder / chair, This will increase safety when changing a light fixture as ladders etc will not be required.
Additionally, if an elderly or disabled person needed to change a light bulb, having an extendable feature will enable them to quickly and safely change the bulb -and again, without risk of electrocution, as no electricity will be being passed through the light whilst detached.
The extendable section is preferably controlled by a remote control, linking to a receiver fitted inside the ceiling mounted section. But this could just as easily be achieved by including an additional switch to the standard light switch, which would be wired up to the electric motor.
An overview of the different sections of the invention, and how each section will work is now described by referring to the accompanying drawing 1.
The mains electric cable (A) in the ceiling is fitted through a hole (B) in the side of the ceiling mounted section (C) of the invention.
The cable is connected to a connector block (D), and the connector block is used to supply power to the electric motor (E) and the 3 metal plates (F) which conduct the electricity through to the detachable section (G).
The electric motor is attached to 2 cable rolls (H) and this cable is pushed through 2 set holes (I) in the bottom cover (J) of the ceiling mounted section, When required, the electric motor will either extend or retract the cables, and hence the detachable section.
When the detachable section is fully attached, the 3 metal prongs (K) pointing out from the detachable section are pressed against the 3 metal plates (F) in the ceiling mounted section -which conducts the electricity from the mains power cable, through the ceiling rose, and into the light fixture cabling (L).
When the retractable section is extended / lowered, the 3 metal prongs are separated from the 3 metal plates -which will break all electric circuit, and hence means the detachable plate and the light fitting are completely free from electricity.
For added security, when fixing the ceiling mounted section in the ceiling, 2 ceiling brackets (M) are pushed through a hole in the side of the ceiling mounted section and then sit above the ceiling (N).
The ceiling mounted unit has a lip (0) which sits below the ceiling. Two screws (P) are inserted through holes (0) in the lip and are screwed into threads (R) in both ceiling brackets -thus ensuring the ceiling mounted section is securely attached to the ceiling, and can bear the weight of most light fixtures.
Claims (6)
- Claims 1. A ceiling rose, with one section mounted in the ceiling and wired to the electric mains, and another detachable section which a light fixture can be connected to.
- 2. A ceiling rose, according to claim 1, which can be extended and retracted to and from the ceiling.
- 3. A ceiling rose, according to claim 2, which can be extended and retracted by the use of an electric motor.
- 4. A ceiling rose, according to claim 2, which when extended, breaks all electric current from the light fixture.
- 5. A ceiling rose according to claim 3, which can be extended and retracted to and from the ceiling by use of a remote control.
- 6. A ceiling rose according to claim 3, which can be extended and retracted to and from the ceiling by use of an additional light switch, wired directly to the electric motor.
