Description

Description
A method for displaying a value of a speed limit and a vehicle with an instrument cluster The invention relates to a method for displaying a value of a speed limit in an instrument cluster of a vehicle and a ve-hicle with an instrument cluster.
A method and an apparatus for displaying a measured value in a vehicle is known from DE 199 50 155 Cl. A maximum scale value of a scale is determined in a first method step depend-ing on at least one further value for a measured quantity in a method for displaying a measured value in a. freely program-mable instrument cluster in a vehicle, with the instrument cluster being controlled by a computer unit and with driving and operating data of the vehicle being determined via sen-sors. In a second method step, the measured value of the measured quantity is displayed on the scale for the measured quantity. A display of the measured values can thus occur in a situation-dependent manner, in that the illustrated display range of the measured quantity is adjusted to the traffic situation. In one embodiment, the permissible maximum speed is arranged centrally in the middle or in an upper region of a scale, so that the range of the permissible maximum speed is clearly visible to a viewer. That disadvantageous aspect in the known method is that it is very complex.
It is the object of the invention to provide a method for displaying a value of a speed limit in an instrument cluster of a vehicle and a vehicle with an instrument cluster which displays a speed limit in a simple way.
This object is achieved with the subject matter of the inde- pendent claims. Further advantageous developments are pro-vided in the dependent claims.
In accordance with the invention, a method is provided for displaying a value of a speed limit in an instrument cluster of a vehicle, with the method having the following steps.
There is a determination of a value of a speed limit at least during one trip of the vehicle, with the speed limit applying to a section disposed in front of the vehicle in the travel- ling direction of the vehicle. Furthermore, there is a dis- play of the determined value of the speed limit in a trip me-ter display of the instrument cluster.
As a result of the fact that the determined value of the speed limit is displayed in the trip meter display of the in-strument cluster, the method in accordance with the invention comes with the advantage that the display can occur in a sim-ple manner. For this purpose, the trip meter display which is already present in the instrument cluster is used, which is why no additional new components are required in the instru-ment cluster. In this way, the possibility is also provided especially in vehicles without a driver's display to display speed limits even in vehicles with fewer features.
The display of the determined value speed limit can occur di- rectly after the determination of the value or when the ve-hicle enters the area of validity of the speed limit. Both possibilities will reliably inform the passengers, and espe-cially the driver of the vehicle, on the value of the speed limit, so that the speed of the vehicle can be adjusted ac-cordingly if necessary.
Furthermore, the current speed of the vehicle can be deter-mined and an acoustic and/or visual warning can be emitted if the determined speed lies above the determined value of the speed limit. The driver of the vehicle in particular can be informed about exceeding the speed limit.
In a further embodiment of the method in accordance with the invention, the display of the determined value of the speed limit occurs for a predetermined period of time. Subsequent-ly, the current level of the trip meter is shown again in the trip meter display.
In a further preferred embodiment of the method in accordance with the invention, the determination of the value of the speed limit occurs with the help of an optical sensor, with the optical sensor determining a value of a speed limit indi-cated on a traffic sign. The traffic sign is arranged in the region in front of this area or in the area in front of the vehicle. The optical sensor can especially comprise an opti-cal camera.
In addition or alternatively to this, the determination of the value of the speed limit can occur with the help of a na- vigation device. The navigation device determines the posi-tion of the vehicle and a value of a speed limit disposed in front of the vehicle, which value is stored in a memory appa-ratus. The navigation device can determine the position of the vehicle by means of GPS data and the memory apparatus can comprise at least one digital map.
It is further additionally or alternatively possible that the determination of the value of the speed limit occurs with the help of a vehicle-to--vehicle communication apparatus. The ye-hide-to-vehicle communication apparatus is provided with a value of a speed limit from at least one further vehicle, which speed limit is valid in the region in front of the ye-hide.
Moreover, it is additionally or alternatively possible that the determination of the value of the speed limit occurs with the help of a vehicle-to-infrastructure communication appara-tus. The vehicle-to-infrastructure communication apparatus is provided with a value of a speed limit from at least one fixed object, which speed limit is valid in the region in front of the vehicle.
All embodiments as mentioned above advantageously allow a re-liable determination of the value of the speed limit.
The trip meter display is arranged in a preferable embodiment as a six-digit seven-segment display with one decimal place.
In order to display the determined value of the speed limit the positions arranged directly before the decimal place are activated, e.g. illuminated.
In a further embodiment, the trip meter display is arranged in a central field of the instrument cluster. In this way, the determined value of the speed limit can be seen in an es-pecially simple way by the vehicle passengers, especially the driver of the vehicle.
Especially preferably, the vehicle is a motor-vehicle, espe-cially a car or a truck.
The invention further relates to a vehicle, comprising a de-termination apparatus, with the determination apparatus being arranged for determining a value of a speed limit at least during a trip of the vehicle. The speed limit applies to a section in front of the vehicle in the travelling direction of the vehicle. Moreover, the vehicle comprises an instrument cluster with a trip meter display. The instrument cluster is arranged for displaying the determined value of the speed limit in the trip meter display.
The vehicle in accordance with the invention has the advan-tages mentioned in connection with the method in accordance with the invention, which shall not be mentioned at this point again in order to avoid repetitions.
The determination apparatus comprises an optical sensor in one embodiment of the vehicle in accordance with the inven-tion, with the optical sensor being arranged for determining and value of a speed limit indicated on a traffic sign. The traffic sign is arranged in front of the section or in the section disposed in front of the vehicle. The optical sensor can especially comprise an optical camera.
Additionally or alternatively, the determination apparatus can comprise a navigation device. The navigation device is arranged for determining the position of the vehicle and a value stored in a memory apparatus of a speed limit valid in a section in front of the vehicle. The navigation device can be arranged for determining the position of the vehicle by means of GPS data and the memory apparatus can comprise at least one digital map.
Furthermore, the determination apparatus can additionally or alternatively comprise a vehicle-to-vehicle communication ap-paratus. The vehicle-to-vehicle communication apparatus is arranged for receiving a value of a speed limit from at least one further vehicle, which speed limit is valid in the sec-tion in front of the vehicle.
Furthermore, the determination apparatus can additionally or alternatively comprise a vehicle-to-infrastructure communica-tion apparatus. The vehicle-to-infrastructure communication apparatus is arranged for receiving a value of a speed limit from at least one fixed object, which speed limit is valid in the section in front of the vehicle.
The mentioned embodiments allow a reliable determination of the value of the speed limit, as has already been explained in connection with the aforementioned embodiments of the me-thods in accordance with the invention.
In a preferred embodiment of the vehicle in accordance with the invention, the trip meter display is arranged as a six- digit seven-segment display with one decimal place. Further-more, the trip meter display is arranged for the display of the determined value of the speed limit by means of activa- tion, e.g. illumination, of the places arranged directly be-fore the decimal place. Moreover, the trip meter display can
be in a central field of the instrument cluster.
In one further embodiment, the determination apparatus is connected with the instrument cluster by at least one signal line. The at least one signal line can at least partly be a component of a CAN bus of the vehicle.
The vehicle is especially preferably a motor-vehicle, espe-cially a car or truck.
The invention is now explained in closer detail by reference to the enclosed drawings, wherein: Fig. 1 shows a flowchart of a method for displaying a val-ue of a speed limit in an instrument cluster of a vehicle according to one embodiment of the inven-tion; Fig. 2 shows an instrument cluster and a determination ap-paratus of a vehicle according to one embodiment of the invention; Figs. 3A and 3B show the trip meter display of the in-strument cluster according to Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 shows a flowchart of a method for displaying a value of a speed limit in an instrument cluster of a vehicle ac-cording to one embodiment of the invention.
A detection of a traffic sign with the help of an optical sensor of the vehicle occurs in step 20. The optical sensor can comprise an optical camera.
It is checked in a step 30 whether the traffic sign contains or displays a speed limit. The value of the speed limit which is optionally indicated on the traffic sign is detected by means of the optical sensor. For example, the value of the speed limit can be detected by an optical camera.
If the traffic sign does not contain a speed limit, step 20 is performed repeatedly. If the traffic sign does contain a speed limit, there will be a display of the determined value of the speed limit in a trip meter display of the instrument cluster in a step 40. The display of the determined value of the speed limit can occur directly after the determination of the value or upon entry of the vehicle into the area of va-lidity of the speed limit.
In addition, the determination of the value of the speed lim- it can occur with the help of a navigation device. The navi-gation device determines the position of the vehicle and a value stored in a memory apparatus of a speed limit valid in the section in front of the vehicle. The navigation device can determine the position of the vehicle by means of GPS da-ta and the memory apparatus can comprise at least one digital map.
It is further possible that the determination of the value of the speed limit occurs with the help of a vehicle-to-vehicle communication apparatus. The vehicle-to-vehicle communication apparatus is provided with a value of a speed limit from at least one further vehicle, which speed limit is valid in the region in front of the vehicle.
It is further possible that the determination of the value of the speed limit occurs with the help of a vehicle-to- infrastructure communication apparatus. The vehicle-to-infrastructure communication apparatus is provided with a value of a speed limit from at least one fixed object, which speed limit is valid in the region in front of the vehicle.
It is determined in a step 50 whether the time t after the start of the display of the determined value of the speed limit is less than or equal to a predetermined threshold val- ue t0. If the time t is less than or equal to to, the deter-mined value of the speed limit is continued to be displayed.
If the time t for the duration of the display is larger than the predetermined threshold value to, the current level of the trip meter is displayed in the trip meter display again in a step 60.
Fig. 2 shows an instrument cluster 1 and a determination ap- paratus 8 of a vehicle not shown in closer detail in accor-dance with an embodiment of the invention.
The instrument cluster 1 comprises a trip meter display 2 and further display elements 10 and 11. In the illustrated embo-diment, the display element 10 shows the current speed of the vehicle and the display element 11 the current speed of the engine of the vehicle. The arrangement of the trip meter dis-play 2 and the display elements 10 and 11 as shown in Fig. 2 is a schematic and not necessarily true to scale.
Determination apparatus 8 is arranged for determining a value of a speed limit at least during a trip of the vehicle, with the speed limit being valid within a section in the front of the vehicle in the travelling direction of the vehicle. For this purpose, the determination apparatus 8 comprises an opt-ical sensor 3 in the illustrated embodiment, with the optical sensor 3 being arranged for determining a value of a speed limit shown on a traffic sign. The optical sensor 3 can have an optical camera for example.
In addition, the determination apparatus 8 can comprise a na- vigation device. The navigation device is arranged for deter-mining the position of the vehicle and a value stored in a memory apparatus of a speed limit valid in a section disposed in front of the vehicle. The navigation device can be ar-ranged for determining the position of the vehicle by means of GPS data and the memory apparatus can comprise at least one digital map.
Furthermore, the determination apparatus 8 can comprise a ye- hLcle-to-vehicle communication apparatus. The vehicle-to-vehicle communication apparatus is arranged for receiving a value of a speed limit from at least one further vehicle, which speed limit is valid in the region in front of the ve-hicle.
In addition, the determination apparatus 8 can comprise a ve- hicle-to-infrastructure communication apparatus. The vehicle- to-infrastructure communication apparatus is arranged for re-ceiving a value of a speed from at least one fixed object, which speed limit is valid in the region in front of the ye-hide.
The instrument cluster 1 is arranged for displaying the de-termined value of the speed limit in the trip meter display 2. For this purpose, the instrument cluster 1 is connected to the determination apparatus 8 by at least one signal line 9.
The signal line can at least partly be a component of a CAN bus of the vehicle. The display of the determined value of the speed limit in the trip meter display 2 will be explained below in closer detail in connection with the following draw-ings.
The vehicle in the illustrated embodiment is a motor-vehicle, especially a car or a truck.
Figs. 3A and 3B show the trip meter display 2 of the instru-ment cluster 1 according to Fig. 2.
In the illustrated embodiment, the trip meter display 2 is arranged as a six-digit seven-segment display one decimal place 4 and further places 5, 6, 7, 12 and 13 and a display element 14 which indicates a decimal point. The trip meter display 2 allows illustrating a speed limit in the form of a number which is detected by an optical camera for example and is sent to the instrument cluster 1. The first three places 5, 6 and 7 before the decimal place 4 are used. The fourth and fifth place, which means the places 12 and 13, and the decimal place 4 are left free. After the detection of a speed limit by the camera, the display can be shown for a predeter- mined period of time before the current level of the trip me-ter is displayed again. Fig. 3A shows the illustration of a speed limit of 120 km/h, and of 80 km/h in Fig. 3B. The plac-es 5, 6 and 7 are illuminated in Fig. 3A, and the places 5 and 6 in Fig. 3B.
The invention thus allows the display of speed limits even in vehicles with fewer features.
