Abstract

The dressing comprises a pouch 10 consisting of fluid permeable outer layers 12, 14 enclosing a volume of permeable material 16, for example gauze. A plurality of these pouches 10 are placed within a wound cavity 20 to fill and conform to the shape of the wound cavity 20 and sealed within the wound cavity with a conduit 22 for supplying reduced pressure to the wound or provision for negative pressure may be provided on the wound cover 23. The outer layers 12, 14 of the pouches are non- adherent for ease of dressing changes and may be impregnated or coated with anti-microbials or medicaments to promote wound healing or with active charcoal to reduce wound odour. The pouches 10 can be manufactured in various sizes, shapes and in a sheet or a roll.

Description

The present invention relates to a dressing, in particular a wound dressing, for use in topical negative pressure therapy.
Wound dressings have been used in the medical field to facilitate the healing of chronic wounds. One technique has been to use topical negative pressure therapy, which was developed to allow excess wound fluids to be removed from the wound site while at the same time protecting the wound.
Various wound dressings exist to promote the healing of such chronic wounds. One such dressing is the application of a wound liner to the wound site and then applying layers of gauze to fill the wound cavity, a drain to apply negative pressure to the wound cavity and forming an air-tight seal over the gauze layers and drain.
The present invention seeks to make improvements.
Accordingly, the present invention comprises a wound dressing including a fluid permeable pouch enclosing a volume of fluid permeable material. Typically, the fluid permeable material can be gauze. The fluid permeable material can be in layers or separate, loose pieces.
Preferably, the pouch is made of non-adherent material on its uppermost and lower surfaces, sealed at the edges, and containing the volume of permeable material, such as gauze.
Conveniently, a plurality of pouches are placed within a wound cavity, a conduit for supplying reduced pressure to the wound cavity and a seal for positioning over the wound to substantially cover the pouches. Advantageously, the pouch(es) simplify the current layering construction used to fill a wound cavity. Instead of lining the wound with a non-adherent layer, then using individual layers of gauze along with a drain wrapped in gauze, the new system simply requires the insertion of enough pouches to fill the wound cavity, within which the conduit for supplying negative pressure can be placed between pouches, or alternatively, a connection for the supply of negative pressure can be provided on the seal covering the pouches.
More preferably, a radio-opaque marking is incorporated within the construction of the pouch to verify removal by X-Ray or to make the wound extent visible on X-Ray.
Advantageously, the pouches are formed in many different sizes, and even on a sheet or a roll. More preferably, the pouches are formed into different 3-D shapes, for example tetrahedrons or spheres or similar.
The pouches permit exudates from the wound to pass therethrough. The pouches have sufficient rigidity to substantially maintain respective shapes thereof to thereby facilitate passage of the exudates through spaces or passages defined between and through the adjacent pouches. The pouches contain gauze or a similar porous material. Some of the pouches can incorporate a medicament, anti-microbial agent or odour reducing agent.
The pouch enclosure material can be a fabric or polymeric material.
A negative pressure source is in fluid communication with the conduit. The negative pressure source can be any conventional vacuum pump.
In a preferred embodiment, the wound dressing includes a plurality of fluid permeable pouches disposed within a wound and adapted to permit exudates from the wound to pass therethrough, a seal to cover the pouches and negative pressure means for supplying reduced pressure to the wound.
An embodiment of the present invention is described below, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures la and lb are schematic diagrams of wound dressings according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a schematic diagram of the wound dressing with the connection to negative pressure within on the wound cavity; Figure 3 is a schematic diagram of the wound dressing with the access to negative pressure on the seal; Referring to Figures la and ib, the wound dressing comprises a pouch 10 including an upper layer 12 and a lower layer 14 sealed together sufficient to enclose a volume of fluid permeable material 16, for example gauze. The upper 12 and lower layers may be sealed partially or completely to enclose a volume of fluid permeable material 16. A plurality of such pouches 10 are used to fill and conform to the shape of a wound cavity. The upper and lower layers 12, 14 of each pouch 10 are porous to permit exudates to pass from the wound cavity through the pouch 10. The upper and lower layers 12, 14 can also be non-adherent so that the pouches do not stick to the wound site.
Antimicrobial agents, antibiotics, hydrogels, silver compounds, growth factors, and similar medicaments can be added to the pouch or coated to the upper and lower layers 12, 14 to promote healing. Additionally, the pouches can have activated charcoal impregnated materials to reduce odour from the wound and can also incorporate compounds associated with wound healing requiring slow release and not direct contact with wound bed.
The pouches may be constructed with a radio-opaque marking or stripe to verify removal by X-Ray or to make the wound extent visible on X-Ray.
Pouches 10 can be provided in a sheet or a roll to allow the wound dressing to be sized to wounds of different shapes and sizes. The sheets or rolls can have perforations surrounding each pouches so that the pouches can be detached from the sheets or rolls as required.
In use, a plurality of pouches 10 are placed within a wound cavity 20 to fill and conform to the shape of the cavity 20. A wound cover 21 is then placed in contact with the skin around the perimeter of the wound and secured by adhesives or similar to provide an air-tight seal. A conduit 22 is arranged within the cavity 20 to supply negative pressure or an access 23 to a negative pressure is provided on the wound cover 21. The wound cover 21 may be any conventional wound cover known in the art.
The wound dressing of the invention is simpler to apply than gauze layers, for all sizes of wounds, and allows the skin and tissue to be stapled to the pouches for temporary surgical closure as can sometimes be necessary with topical negative therapy. Additionally, the pouches 10 eliminate any possibilities of fragments of gauze being left behind in wound bed, which can cause inflammation and abscesses.

Claims (7)

  1. CLAIMS1. A wound dressing comprising a fluid permeable pouch enclosing a volume of fluid permeable material.
  2. 2. A wound dressing as claimed in claim 1 wherein the pouch comprises upper and lower layers of non -adherent material, the layers being sealed at their edges, and containing the volume of permeable material within.
  3. 3. A wound dressing as claimed in claims 1 or 2 wherein a radio-opaque mark is incorporated within the construction of the pouch to verify removal by X-Ray or to make the wound extent visible on X-Ray
  4. 4. A wound dressing as claimed in claims 1 to 3 wherein the pouch is formed in a sheet or a roll.
  5. 5. A wound dressing as claimed in claims ito 4 wherein the pouches are of different sizes and shapes.
  6. 6. A wound dressing as claimed in claims 1 to 3 wherein at least some of the pouches include a medicament, or anti-microbial agent or odour reducing agent.
  7. 7. A wound dressing as claimed in claim 1 wherein there are a plurality of pouches disposed within a wound and adapted to permit exudates from the wound to pass therethrough, a seal to cover the pouches and negative pressure means for supplying reduced pressure to the wound.
