Abstract
A floor mat for collecting waste fluid produced during surgery is of a two-part construction having a rigid and robust tray part which sits on the operating room floor, and a perforated insert part which sits snugly within the tray and provides a generally horizontal surface upon which theatre staff, e.g. a surgeon, can stand. The tray part has a sloped floor to allow any fluid which passes through the insert to drain to one end of the tray where it can be removed, preferably via drainage hole connected to a suction device. The underside of the perforated insert part is provided with spikes or pegs which contact the sloped surface of the tray to promote drainage of the waste fluid.
Description
SUCTION MAT DESCRIPTION
TWO PIECE DESIGN SUCTION MAT. THIS IS TO BE USED IN THE THEATRE AREA IN A HOSPITAL WHEN THE SURGEON IS PERFORMING ARTHROSCOPIC/KEYHOLE SURGERY. WHEN THE SURGEON IS DOING THIS TYPE OF OPERATION, FLUID IS USED TO EXPAND THE JOINT INTO WHICH THE SURGEON IS LOOKING.
DURING THE OPERATION FLUID IS LEAKED OUT OF THE SURGICAL SITE IN VARING QUANTITIES
DEPENDING ON THE DURATION OF THE PROCEDURE. THE SUCTION MAT IS DESIGNED TO COLLECT
WASTE FLUID RATHER THAN IT SPILLING ON THE FLOOR AND CAUSING ADDITIONAL WORK FOR THE
THEATRE STAFF DURING THE OPERATION.
IT WILL ALSO REDUCE POSSIBLE CONTAMINTION OF FLUID AND BODY FLUID BEING LEAKED. THE MAT IS POSITIONED ALONGSIDE THE OPERATING TABLE. THE SURGEON AND SURGICAL ASSISTANT STAND ON THE MAT NEXT TO THE OPERATING TABLE PRIOR TO THE OPERATION. FLUID LEAKED FROM THE SURGICAL SITE WILL 60 DOWN THE DRAPE (AS NORMAL) AND ONTO THE MAT THEN THROUGH THE
SUPERIOR HOLES IN THE INSERT AND WILL DRAIN DOWN THE GRADIENT OF THE BASE TO THE END
HOLE WHERE ONE CONNECTS A SUCTION TUBE TO COLLECT ALL WASTE FLUID FROM THE BASE. THE BASE IS DESIGNED TO BE ROBUST AND REUSABLE THIS WILL BE CLEANED AFTER EACH PROCEDURE (LI1(E ALL OTHER THINGS IN THE THEATRE AFTER A PROCEDURE) AND THE INSERT CAN BE REPLACED WITH A
NEW INSERT AT THE END OF THE DAY OR AFTER EACH PROCEDURE DEPENDING ON ANY HOSPITAL
POLICY.
