Abstract

A method of machining a flange 20 on a differential pinion shaft (16, fig 1) having a input pinion 10 formed as a hypoid gear (14) and mounted for rotation in bearings (18), the method comprises rotating the input pinion 10 about its rotary axis Y, and forming an initial cylindrical surface of a recess 26 using a stationary cutting tool 30; determining a coordinate position of a central axis of the initial cylindrical surface; and consequently of a rotary axis Y of the input pinion 10; and holding the input pinion 10 stationary, and forming a finished cylindrical surface using a rotating cutting tool (36) which rotates about the central axis Y determined previously. As a result of this procedure, the finished cylindrical surface of the recess 26 is accurately generated and centred on the rotary axis Y. A dummy ring gear 28 is rotated about an axis X and in turn drives the input pinion 10 and flange 20. Apparatus for carrying out the method includes a motor (56) which rotates the dummy ring gear 28 and is mounted to a support structure. The dummy ring gear 28 may be locked against rotation by an internal brake of the motor (56) or it may be locked by a separate device. A contact sensor (34) establishes several coordinates around recess 26 and a processor calculates a position of the axis Y which is used as the rotating axis of the rotating cutting tool (36).
