Abstract
246,499. Gegauff, C. Jan. 24, 1925, [Convention date]. Carding. engine s.-In order to sort out the shorter fibres from the fleece of cotton or analogous material prepared on the carding-engine before it is passed to the calendar rollers and formed into a sliver, a drum is provided which acts with the doffer or the cylinder. The fibres are spread as a thin fleece on such drum and the shorter fibres are thrown off by centrifugal force into a suitable receptacle whilst the longer fibres are carried forward and formed into the sliver. The speed of rotation of the drum will govern the length of the fibres thrown off. The drum G, Fig. 2, which may be clothed with wire or bristles may be arranged below the doffer E and throw off the shorter fibres into a receptacle M, from which they are transferred by a belt J between compressing rollers L to another receptacle Ma. The longer fibres are collected from the drum G by a second drum H and passed back to the doffer from which they are removed and consolidated in the usual manner. A second drum G may be provided to take the fibres from the first drum, which may be provided with dirt knives or a grating or grid of wire mesh or perforated metal, whereby any dust may be separated, and such dust may be collected in a separate receptacle. The fibres thrown off by the two drums G, which may rotate at different speeds, may be collected in separate! receptacles. The drums G. H may be arranged above the doffer and the fleece of longer fibres be taken directly from the drum H or the doffer may be dispensed with and the drum G act directly on the main cylinder A. The drum G may in such a case be provided with a grid or dirt bars so spaced that whilst the short fibres may be projected through it, the longer nbres are conserved and passing along with the drum. The drum G may be arranged to act on the fibres on the main cylinder before they reach the doffer. The fibres are stripped from the main cylinder A by a drum G<a>, Fig. 7, and are removed therefrom by a drum G. The shorter fibres are projected from its surface into a receptacle M and the longer ones carried round and returned to the main cylinder. The fibres may be stripped from the main cylinder by the drum G and returned by means of a drum H situated above the drum G.
