Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a skin-massaging device according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the skin-massaging device of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a skin-massaging device according to a second embodiment of the present invention; Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view of a variation of the base of the skin-massaging device of Figure 3; and Figure 5 is an exploded perspective schematic of a skin-massaging device according to a third embodiment of the present invention.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is illustrated a skin-massaging device 10 according to a preferred embodiment of the invention. The skin-massaging device 10 comprises a generally wedge shaped body. A handgrip 11 is located along the thicker end 12 of the body and is integrally formed in the body. A bifurcated blade member 13 is located at the thinner end 14 of the body. The, in use, foremost face of the body is concave in form. The bifurcated blade member 13 comprises a pair of blades 16, 16' running along the thin edge of the body. Each of the blades 16, 16' is substantially parallel to the other blade, and runs the length of the blade member 13. A number of recessed grooves 18 are provided on the, in use, foremost face of the skin-massaging device 10.
Each of the recessed grooves 18 is substantially parallel to an adjacent groove 18, and runs generally perpendicular to the edge of the blades 16, 16'.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a skin-massaging device 20 according to a second embodiment of the invention. The skin-massaging device 20 comprises a blade member 22 and a handgrip 24. In use, the skin-massaging device 20 comprises a generally wedge shaped body. A pair of blades 30, 30' is located at the thinner end 28 of the blade member 22. Each of the blades 30, 30' is substantially parallel to the other blade, and runs the length of the blade member 22. Although not curved as in the first embodiment, the blade includes an inflection 39, running parallel to the blade edges 30,30' so that, in use, the foremost face of the blade member 22 is quasi-concave in form.
The handgrip 24 comprises a generally wedged shaped member. A generally cylindrical cavity 36 runs through handgrip 24, and is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the handgrip 24. The cavity 36 opens onto both ends of the handgrip 24, and extends to and opens onto the thinner end 32 of the handgrip 24 to form two spaced apart leading edges 34, 34'. In use, the thicker end 26 of the blade member 22 is located in the cavity 36 of the handgrip 24 by sliding the blade member 22 into one of the open ends of the cavity 36 of the handgrip 24. The blade member 22 can thereby be easily removed and replaced.
Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view of a variation of a handgrip 38 of the skin-massaging device 20, Figure 3. The handgrip 38 comprises two sections 40, 40'. In use, the two sections 40,40' interlock via a sliding mechanism. A pair of elongate rails 42. 42' are provided on the, in use, inner surface of the first section 40'. In use, the mating face of each of the elongate rails 42, 42' is in side-by-side relationship with each of a complementary elongate recessed rail 44, 44' respectively, provided on the, in use, inner surface of the second section 40. A recessed cavity 46 is provided on the, in use, inner face of each section 40, 40'. The cavity 46 is shaped and dimensioned to accommodate the thicker end 26 of the blade member 22, Figure 3, and opens onto the thinner side 45 of the handgrip 38.
Figure 5 is an exploded perspective schematic of a skin-massaging device 48 according to a third embodiment of the present invention. The skin-massaging device 48 comprises a blade member 50 and a handgrip 52. The blade member 50 is identical in form to the blade member 22 depicted in Figure 3. The handgrip 52 comprises two sections 54, 54'. In use, the two sections 54, 54' interlock via a fastening mechanism. A pair of projections 56, 56' extend from the, in use, inner surface of the first section 54, each of which locates in a complementary aperture 58, 58' respectively, provided on the, in use, inner face of the second section 54'. A recessed cavity 60 is provided on the, in use, inner face of each section 54, 54'. The cavity 60 is shaped and dimensioned to accommodate the thicker end 26 of the blade member 22, Figure 3, and opens onto the thinner side 62 of the handgrip 52.
For each of the above embodiments, lotion may be applied to the skin or to the leading edge of the skin-massaging device, which is then used as a chemical-mechanical tool that massages skin, and mechanically activates a lotion as it is applied, which maximises the lotion's chemical action. The skin-massaging device is used for cleaning and conditioning skin, applying anti-ageing lotions, treating skin ailments and applying first-aid treatments.
As the blades of the present invention are provided by a bifurcated blade member, each blade can flex somewhat independently of the other, while the blades move as a unit over the skin, with the blades at the leading edge cleaning the skin, and the blades at the trailing edge massaging the skin by stretching and compressing the skin to stimulate blood flow within the dermis without marking.
Moreover, the deformable but resilient material from which the device is formed reduces skin surface inflammation, while opening pores to allow deep wetting that releases ingrained dirt and improves circulation.
The present invention is multifunctional and can be used to dispense, spread, rub-in (to activate), massage and exfoliate by gentle scraping or mild abrasion through the stretch/squeeze action of the blade member on the skin while dispensing. The blades cover large areas rapidly and work lotions deep into the skin pores as they work dirt out. The all-in-one features add convenience by simplifying and speeding up the application of many skin-care treatments, especially away from the washroom.
Accordingly, the present invention provides convenience of use and reduces the risk of spreading infection by minimising finger contact with the skin while cleaning, applying cosmetics or applying medications. As beauty therapists are constantly touching clients' skin without the use of protective gloves, the second and third embodiments of the present invention reduce the risk of transmission, and so are potentially beneficial to both therapist and client. Also therapist may be at risk of over exposure to some chemicals within treatment formulations.
Moreover, the first embodiment of the present invention is intended for personal use and so to be reusable. However, the second and third embodiments of the invention find utility in a professional niche, as the blade member is intended to be disposable and the handgrip is intended to be reusable, allowing for the provision of a better quality handgrip and a single use blade member, which can be easily disposed of after use, and replaced between clients.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments described herein but can be amended or modified without departing from the scope of the present invention.
