Abstract
The system comprises a sensor attached to a vehicle which in use detects personnel, wearing a transmitter, within a given range. The system may inform the operator of the vehicle of an impending collision via an audible alarm or flashing light. Alternatively it may automatically stop the vehicle. The system may use an FM radio frequency, and each personnel transmitter may be uniquely identified by a code. The system may be combined with a fire alarm system to warn of occupants within a given area once a fire alarm has been raised.

SPECIFICATION & DESCRIPTION
"Of The Personnel Detection System Attached to Human Operated Vehicles With Compromised or Limited Visibility" Desiened by Mr. I Kerrigan of: 8 Lavender Way Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, SGI8 8TS, United Kingdom.
The Personnel Detection System has been designed to safe guard personnel whilst moving in areas where human operated moving vehicles would be working.
These vehicles could take the form of a Fork Lift Truck or Large Vehicles both with the common problem of Limited or Compromised Visibility, this in turn visually impairing the sight of the driver of the afore mentioned types of vehicles, thus jeopardizing the safety of personnel which may by accident or intent wander into the working vicinity of the types of vehicles.
The Personnel Detection System would consist of a FM Radio receiving unit being attached to the moving vehicle, and a FM sending unit being carried by personnel who may also be in the working vicinity of the moving vehicles.
The receiving unit attached to the vehicle would consist of an Audible and Visual aid to warn the driver that someone who was wearing the sending unit has entered into the working area of the vehicle, the receiving unit has a 3600 span and a detectable distance of 75 meters or less (this is a distance which can be set during manufacturing, and determined by the customer), the receiving unit could also disconnect the engine if the detected person becomes too close or walks directly in front the moving vehicle.
The receiving unit would cause an Audible and Visual Alarm if a person donning the Sending unit came into the working area of the moving vehicle, it would also stop the vehicle by disconnecting the starting circuit to the vehicle if the person donning the sending unit came too close to the moving vehicle.
This system could also be incorporated into existing fire alarm systems, to warn the receptionist or safety officer, that a person wearing the sending unit is still inside the building.
Page 2_
Figure I item description.
A. These are examples of the Human Operated Vehicles (could be a fork lift truck or a large dumper truck articulated lorry etc) B. This is the Receiving Unit (approximately 150mm X 150mm X 50mm) with a wave antenna mounted on the top, this unit will be fixed onboard the vehicle, utilizing the vehicles power supply (12 volts or 24 volts DC), onboard the receiving unit is a high pitched audible alarm and a flashing light (flashing light used for noisy areas) also a safety relay used to disconnect the starting circuit to the vehicle (this will be broken if the system detects personnel too close to the vehicle. Inside the receiving unit is an electronic board which controls the flashing light and the audible alarm and the starting circuit, it is the unit which detects the signal coming from the sending unit attached to the personnel.
C. This is an example of a worker in the vicinity of the vehicle donning the sending unit.
D. This is the sending unit worn by the worker; physical size is no bigger than a credit card.
E. This is a blown up picture of the sending unit, as you can see it has two LED's (light emitting diodes onboard) the top LED is the operational LED it flashes when the sending unit is transmitting a signal, the second LED is a low battery LED, informing the wearer that the battery needs to be changed. This device sends out a signal unique to only this sending unit, utilizing the Keeloq system.
F. This is an optional computer, the computer will monitor the signal coming from the sending unit and display the information on screen (a name can be assigned at the point of donning the sending unit) this information can be used to inform the user of the computer system that the person donning that particular sending unit is still in the office/factory etc, could be used in fire alarm systems.
Claims (8)
- Page 3I This control system automatically detects the presence of a person in the vicinity of a vehicle equipped with a Personnel Detection System.
- 2 This system will inform the operator/driver of the vehicle that a person is within the 3600 safety area between 75 meters and zero (this distance will be set at manufacturing), an audible alarm and a flashing will be set if a person comes within the boundaries of the safety area of the vehicle.
- 3 The system will automatically shut off the engine or disable the starting circuit of the vehicle if the person donning a sending unit moves too close to the vehicle equipped with the Personnel Detection system. (this distance set at manufacturing)
- 4 The sending unit utilizes the Keeloq system giving a unique code for each sending unit utilized in the Personnel Detection System This system utilizes FM (frequency modulation) system transmitting at 433 MHz (mega hertz) in the UK and Europe and 31
- 5 MHz for the USA, this is an unlicensed wave length.
- 6 Because of FM wave length legislation the sending units when active will only transmits 20% of the time, a signal is transmitted for 200ms (miliiseconds) and off for 800ms.
- 7 This system can be integrated (with the aid of a computer) with a fire alarm if required, indicating that a person donning the sending unit is still inside the monitored facility.
- 8 Additional antennas can be mounted inside the facility to aid the reception of the signals coming from the sending units if the facility has excessive steel structures.
