Abstract
A water closet cistern lid (10) is formed with a bowl (12) with a drainage aperture (14) passing through the material of the lid and communicating in use with the interior of the cistern, the lid is further provided with means for passing water to the bowl. The means for passing water to the bowl comprises an upstanding spout or spigot (16) secured in the material of the lid or of the body of the cistern. A flexible hose (20) is provided for coupling the spout or spigot to the supply of water fed to the cistern when the cistern is flushed. In an alternative arrangement a water closet cistern is provided the uppermost part of which is formed with a bowl having a drainage aperture coupling the bowl to the interior of the cistern, means being provided for passing water to the bowl and thus the cistern.
Description
WATER CLOSET CISTERN
DESCRIPTION
The invention relates to water closet cisterns and more particularly, but not exclusively, lids therefore.
Wash hand basins are very often provided in bathrooms or cloakrooms to enable a user of a toilet to wash his or hands after use. The wash hand basin may be provided with hot and/or cold water supplies and water (after it is used to wash the hands) is discharged through a waste pipe into the existing drainage system of the building.
Wash hand basins come in various shapes and sizes and with the addition of taps, waste outlets, hot and cold pipe work and PVC waste pipe work requires a large expenditure to install.
Furthermore, they require that additional space be provided in the bathroom or cloakroom - additional space that may be difficult and/or expensive to provide.
An object of the invention is to provide an arrangement, which alleviates and/or overcomes these difficulties.
In accordance with a first aspect the present invention provides a lid for the cistern of a water closet the lid being formed with a bowl with a drainage aperture passing through the material of the lid and communicating in use with the interior of the cistern, the lid being further provided with means for passing water to the bowl.
The means for passing water to the bowl may comprise an upstanding spout or spigot secured in the material of the lid.
The means for passing water to the bowl may comprise an upstanding spout or spigot secured in the material of the body of the cistern.
The coupling means may comprise a flexible hose.
It will be appreciated that when a cistern is provided with a lid as defined above flushing the cistern after the toilet has been used will have the effect of passing incoming water - replacing that flushed out of the cistern - via the bowl shaped indentation in the lid enabling the user of the toilet to rinse his/her hands.
In a second aspect the present invention provides a cistern tor a water closet the uppermost part of which forms a bowl having a drainage aperture coupling the bowl to the interior of the cistern, means being provided for passing water to the bowl and thus the cistern.
The means for passing water to the bowl may comprise an upstanding spout or spigot secured in the material of the cistern.
The means closet the uppermost part of which forms a bowl having a drainage aperture coupling the bowl to the interior of the cistern, means being provided for passing water to the bowl and thus the cistern.
The means for passing water to the bowl may comprise an upstanding spout or spigot secured in the material of the cistern.
Means may be provided for coupling the spout or spigot to the supply of water fed to the cistern when the cistern is flushed.
The above and other aspects, features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description of the embodiment thereof now made with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a lid for a cistern of a water closet,
Figure 2 is a part sectional front view of a water closet embodying the present invention,
Figure 3 is a part sectional side view of the water closet shown in Figure 2, and Figure 4 is a plan view of the water closet shown in Figures 2 and 3.
With reference now to the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a cistern lid 10 embodying the invention. The cistern lid is preferably moulded or cast to have the particular shape shown. It may be of any suitable material, e.g. a ceramic, plastics or metal.
The cistern lid 10 has a bowl shaped indentation 12 with a drainage aperture 14 at its lowest point. A spout 16 is fixed to the material of lid 10 as shown and its outlet 18 overlies the indentation 12 in the lid. The spout or spigot 16 is coupled by a flexible hose 20, in use, to the water supply to the cistern.
The spout or spigot 16 may be of any suitable material, it may be formed from a ceramic, a plastics or metal. Two particularly suitable materials would be a chromed cast metal spout or a stainless steel spout.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3 the flexible hose 20 is coupled to the water inlet 22 of the cistern - the flow of water to the cistern being controlled by the position of a ball valve 26.
It will be appreciated that when a user flushes the water closet after using it the level of water in the cistern 24 falls.
At a particular point it reaches a level at which the ball valve 26 opens.
At this time the water which would normally be fed directly to the cistern 24 is diverted via the flexible hose 20 to the spout 16. It then falls from the outlet 18 of the spout into the basin formed by the indentation 12 in the top of the cistern lid 10 and drains through the aperture 12 into the cistern 24. Thus it will be appreciated that the top of the cistern may be used as a bowl or basin in which a user of the toilet can rinse his hands.
It will be appreciated that many variations may be made to the described arrangement without departing from the scope of the present invention. For example the spout 16 may be coupled to the material of the cistern body itself and not be supported directly by the lid. Again in certain circumstances the cistern body and lid may be provided in one piece with a pout 16 connected to the upper part of the combined body or to the lower part thereof.
