Abstract

A lamp assembly 10 for a motor vehicle is disclosed in which the lamp assembly 10 can be easily detached from the interior structure of the motor vehicle for use as a torch. independent of the vehicle.

Description

2332267 An Interior Lamp Assembly For A Motor Vehicle This invention
relates to motor vehicles and in particular to an interior lamp assembly for a motor vehicle.
It is known to provide an interior lamp assembly for a motor vehicle to provide lighting for the interior of the motor vehicle.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved interior lamp assembly for a motor vehicle.
According to the invention there is provided a lamp assembly for attachment to part of the interior structure of a motor vehicle by attachment means and in which the lamp unit can be readily detached from the interior structure for use as a torch independent of the vehicle.
The lamp assembly may have a head portion from which a beam of light can be emitted.
The lamp assembly may have two light emitting apertures in the head portion from which light can selectively be emitted to provide light when used as a torch or when attached to the motor vehicle.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing of which:
Fig. 1 shows part of the interior of a motor vehicle with a lamp assembly according to the invention in an attached position; Fig. 2 Fig. 3 is a pictorial view of a lamp assembly according to the invention when detached from the motor vehicle; and is a partial side view of a lamp assembly when attached to part of the interior structure of the motor vehicle.
With reference to the figures there is shown a lamp assembly 10 having a head portion 13. The head portion 13 has an end aperture 14 for emitting a first beam of light and a side aperture 15 for emitting a second beam of light. A baterry (not shown) is located within a body portion 17 of the lamp assembly 10 to provide a source of electric power for a bulb (not shown) located behind the end aperture 14. A changeover switch 16 is provided to change between the battery and a source of electrical power derived from the motor vehicle via an electrical connection 24,25,26 and 27.
The electrical connection comprises a pair of outwardly directed finger 25, 26 which are electrically connected to a second bulb located behind the side aperture 15 and two conductive leaf springs 26, 27 connnected via wires to an electric circuit of the motor vehicle.
The body 17 has two hook shaped lingers 20, 21, extending outwardly from its rear face for engagement with complementary hook shaped fingers 22, 23 attached a part of the interior structure or trim of the motor vehicle. The upper finger 23 is relatively flexible so as to allow the lamp assembly to be readily connected to or detached from its fixings.
When attached to the body structure of the motor vehicle the lamp assembly receives electrical power from the electric circuit of the motor vehicle via the wires 28, 29 and operates as a conventional interior lamp under the control of the changeover switch 16. However if required the lamp assembly can be detached from the structure of the motor vehicle and used as a torch by moving the switch 16 to a different position in which contact is made with the battery.
This is particularly advantageous if the vehicle breaks down as the driver always has access to a source of emergency lighting.
