Abstract
A currency monitoring apparatus comprises a scanner 2 connected to a control computer 10 and a storage facility 4, 5. A cashier scans a tendered bank note which, if recognised as being genuine, is passed to the security bag 4 contained in a strongbox 5. The control computer 10 keeps a running total of the amount stored. As the amount held in the bag 4 reaches a predetermined level the computer 10 issues a 'bag check' warning indicating that the bag will soon require changing. When the bag is full a 'bag full' warning is sent by the computer to the scanner display, or to a central security display panel, and the bag is replaced by security personnel. Whilst the door to the strongbox 5 is open the computer 10 disables the scanner 2 and displays a 'locked' message. The computer also prints a slip 12 which includes the total amount of currency in the bag 4 and this, along with the bag is transferred to the counting store 14 or 15. The computer 10 can be used to control a number of such currency receipt points through serial data links and can provide end-of-day and end-of-week totals.
Description
CURRENCY MONITORING
The present invention relates to a method and a system for monitoring receipt of currency.
At a cash till in a supermarket or at a service station, for example, there is often provided a secure bag (which is often inside a strongbox) and into which bank notes are passed by the cashier on receipt from a customer.
Despite the use of such secure bags, into which the bank notes are passed directly, there is much pilfering by staff. It is not entirely clear precisely at which stage such pilfering takes place. However, it is known that such losses amount to many millions of pounds sterling per annum in the United Kingdom alone.
An object of the present invention is to provide a system and method which help to reduce the amount of pilfering.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a system by which the amount of currency received at a currency receipt point can be monitored.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a system for monitoring receipt of currency at a currency receipt point, the system comprising: storage means associated with a currency receipt point for receiving and storing currency at said currency receipt point; currency recognition apparatus associated with the currency receipt point for recognising the value of currency received by the storage means and transmitting signals representative thereof to control means; and, control means for receiving said signals representative of the value of currency recognised by the currency recognition apparatus and for keeping a running total of the value of the currency received by the storage means at said currency receipt point.
The control means may include means for issuing an alarm when the running total of the value of the currency received by the storage means at said currency receipt point exceeds a predetermined value.
The control means preferably includes means for disabling the currency recognition apparatus when the running total of the value of the currency received by the storage means at said currency receipt point exceeds a predetermined value.
The predetermined value of values can be set according to the location of the currency receipt point, the experience and trustworthiness of the person operating the currency receipt point, the time of day, etc. Security considerations are likely to be significant when determining the values.
The control means preferably includes means for disabling the currency recognition apparatus when the storage means is accessed.
The control means preferably comprises means for resetting and enabling the currency recognition apparatus when the storage means is emptied.
There may be plural storage means each of which carries an identifier, the control means having means for keeping a separate running total of the value of the currency received by each said identified storage means.
Conveniently, the system includes a printer for printing a printout of the total value of currency received by a storage means to be associated with said storage means.
There may be plural currency receipt points each having storage means for receiving and storing currency and each having currency recognition apparatus for recognising the value of currency received by the respective storage means and transmitting signals representative thereof to the control means.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of monitoring receipt of currency at a currency receipt point, the method comprising the steps of: receiving and storing currency at said currency receipt point in storage means associated with the currency receipt point; recognising the value of currency received by the storage means and transmitting signals representative thereof to control means; and, receiving said signals representative of the value of currency recognised by the currency recognition apparatus; and, keeping a running total of the value of the currency received by the storage means at said currency receipt point.
The method may include the step of issuing an alarm when the running total of the value of the currency received by the storage means at said currency receipt point exceeds a predetermined value.
The method may include the step of disabling the currency recognition apparatus when the running total of the value of the currency received by the storage means at said currency receipt point exceeds a predetermined value.
Preferably the currency recognition apparatus is disabled when the storage means is accessed.
Preferably the method includes the step of resetting and enabling the currency recognition apparatus when the storage means is emptied.
There may be plural storage means each of which carries an identifier, and the method may comprise the step of keeping a separate running total of the value of the currency received by each said identified storage means.
Preferably a printout of the total value of currency received by a storage means is printed to be associated with said storage means.
There may be plural currency receipt points each having storage means for receiving and storing currency and each having currency recognition apparatus for recognising the value of currency received by the respective storage means and transmitting signals representative thereof to the control means.
A signal indicative of the total value of currency received by a storage means may be transmitted to a bank when said storage means is full.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of an example of a system according to the present invention; and,
Figures 2A and 2B are a flow diagram summarising the logic flow for the example of Figure 1.
At a cash till or other currency receipt point 1, there is-provided a bank note scanner 2. A customer 3 pays for goods by passing bank notes to a cashier at the currency receipt point 1. The cashier passes the notes through the note scanner 2. The scanner 2 verifies that the bank notes are genuine. Such verification is carried out in a known manner, for example by measuring the size of the note and detecting the position of the usual metallic strip and comparing the measured characteristics with those stored in the local denomination look-up table provided in the scanner 2. If the bank note is passed by the scanner 2 as genuine, then the bank note is fed by the scanner 2 directly into a security bag 4 contained in a strongbox 5 at and associated with the currency receipt point 1. If the bank note is rejected, because a forgery is detected or because the bank note is damaged or misfed into the scanner 1, for example, then the bank note is returned to the cashier.
The scanner 2 is connected to a control computer 10 which can be used to control the scanner 2 remotely. The scanner 2 sends a message to the control computer 10 each time a bank note is scanned, the message indicating the denomination value of the bank note or the fact that the bank note has been rejected. The message transferred to the control computer 10 also carries error detection codes to ensure valid transmission to the control computer 10; the control computer 10 can request re-transmission of the message from the scanner 2 if an error in the transmission is detected.
The control computer 10 keeps a running total of the value of the bank notes which have passed through the scanner 2 into the security bag 4 at the currency receipt point 1.
When the contents of the security bag 4 reach a first predetermined cash value (which is set at the control computer 10), then a "BAG CHECK" message is displayed on a display panel on the scanner 2, indicating that the bag 4 needs to be checked. The message may be displayed for a period of say five seconds. This is sufficient to alert the cashier that the bag 4 will shortly need replacing with a new empty bag 4.
When the contents of the security bag 4 reach a second predetermined cash value (which is also set at the control computer 10 and which is greater than the first predetermined value), then a "BAG FULL" message is displayed on the display panel of the scanner 2 under control of the control computer 10. The control computer 10 causes the scanner 2 to be disabled or locked out in this case so that no more bank notes can be passed through the scanner 2 into the security bag 4. The bag 4 is then removed by security staff and replaced with a new empty bag 4. The security staff can be alerted to the fact that the bag 4 needs replacing by either the cashier on the currency receipt point 1 (who is notified by the display panel on the scanner 2) or by notification being sent to a master security display panel 11 associated with the control computer 10.
When the door of the strongbox 5 is opened to allow the full bag 4 to be removed1 a signal is sent by the scanner 2 to the control computer 10 to indicate that the door 5 has been opened. The control computer 10 disables or locks out the scanner 2 and causes a message "LOCKED" to be displayed on the display panel of the scanner 2. The control computer 10 also causes printing of a bank reconciliation slip 12 at a printer 13. Each security bag carries an identifying serial number, in both humanreadable and machine-readable (e.g. bar-coded) form. A record is maintained by the control computer 10 of the serial number of the bag 4 associated with the currency receipt point 1 at any given time, the data being input to the control computer 10 manually or by scanning the bar code on the bag 4, for example. The printed slip 12 bears the serial number for the bag 4 to be removed from the currency receipt point 1 and is attached to the full bag 4 when the bag 4 has been removed from the currency receipt point 1. The printed slip 12 also bears the total value of the currency in the bag 4 and also the number of notes and value of each denomination of bank note contained in the bag 4 as recorded by the control computer 10. The full bag 4, with the slip 12, is then transferred to a counting store 14 or a prime counting operation 15.
When the new bag 4 is placed in the strongbox 5 and the door of the strongbox 5 closed, a signal is sent to the control computer 10 so that the status indication on the control computer 10 for the currency receipt point 1 can be updated and to cause the control computer 10 to enable the scanner 2.
The control computer 10 causes the display panel on the scanner to display the value of the last two notes passed by the scanner 2 to the strongbox 5. On receipt of a signal from the scanner 2 that a reject note has been detected, the control computer 10 causes a "REJECT" message to be displayed on the display panel of the scanner 2 for a period of say five seconds or until another note is scanned, the display then reverting to the value of the last two notes passed by the scanner 2.
A display button may be provided on the scanner 2.
When the display button is pressed by an operator, the control computer 10 causes display at the scanner 2 of the value of the takings at the currency receipt point 1 since the last "end-of-day" procedure was performed. When an end-of-day procedure is requested, a printout is produced by the control computer 10, the printout including the serial number of the currency receipt point 1; the serial number for the current bag 4; the total value of notes in the current bag 4; the total value of notes since the last en-of-day procedure was performed; the number of notes and their value in the bag 4 for each denomination; and, the number of notes and their value since the last end-of-day procedure was performed. The daily total for the currency receipt point 1 is saved in a file on the control computer 10 and values for the currency receipt point 1 are then initialised to zero. The currency receipt point 1 can then be shut down and switched off. An end-of-week procedure causes the control computer 10 to amalgamate the end-of-day files into an end-of-week file which includes the total cash takings for that period. The end-of-day files are then initialised.
The information mentioned above with regard to the end-of-day procedure can also be obtained at any time by pressing a "print" button associated with the control computer 10.
In Figures 2A and 2B, there is shown a flow diagram which summarises the logic flow for the example shown in
Figure 1. In step 1, for example when the system is turned on or a new bag 4 fitted in the strongbox 5, the scanner 2 at the currency receipt point 1 is initialised by sending signals to and from the control computer 10 to establish the status of the currency receipt point 1. If the display button on the scanner is depressed at step 2, the subtotal of takings at the currency receipt point 1 is displayed at step 3, otherwise flow goes to step 4.
At step 4, if the door to the strongbox 5 is open, the control computer 10 resets the note counts for the currency receipt point 1 at step 5, causes "LOCKED" to be displayed at the scanner 2 in step 6, and locks the scanner 2 in step 7. Flow then returns to step 2.
At step 4, if the door to the strongbox 5 is closed, it is then checked at step 8 whether or not the maximum value for the bag 4 has been reached. If it has, then the "BAG FULL" message is displayed at the scanner at step 9 and flow goes to step 7 where the scanner 2 is locked. The scanner 2 can only be enabled again by removing the full bag 4 and replacing it with an empty bag 4.
If the bag 4 is not full at step 8, the flow goes to step 10 where the scanner 1 is unlocked and thence to step 11 where a note can be scanned by the scanner 2. If the value of notes received by the bag 4 has reached a high value at step 12, a five second timer is started in step 13; when the timer elapses as determined in step 15, the "CHECK BAG" message is displayed on the scanner 2 at step 16. Otherwise, if the high value has not been reached in step 12, the timer is cleared at step 14 and the value of the last two notes scanned is shown on the display panel of the scanner 2 at step 17.
Flow then passes to step 18 where notes can be scanned in. A timer is cleared at step 19 and, if a new note is received by the scanner and passed in step 20, then the denomination values stored by the control computer 10 for the currency receipt point 1 can be updated at step 21.
Flow then returns to step 2.
The control computer 10 can be used to control and monitor many currency receipt points 1, for example by using serial data links and/or in a local area network.
Data can be stored for each currency receipt point 1 and each point 1 and its associated scanner 2 can be controlled independently. The maximum cash value which can be taken before the "BAG CHECK" or "BAG FULL" messages are displayed can be independently set for each currency receipt point 1.
The control computer 10 can be configured to display current status information for each currency receipt point 1 on a display screen of the control computer 10. For each currency receipt point 1, there can be recorded the serial number of the currency receipt point 1; its status (i.e.
on/off/scanner locked out); number of notes of each denomination in current bag 4; the total value of notes in current bag 4; the denomination of last and previous notes scanned; current cash bag serial number; and next bag serial number (which may be manually added or scanned in using a bar code reader).
Because the control computer 10 keeps a record of the value of currency received in each money bag 4 for each currency receipt point 1, a note of that value can be sent to a bank as soon as a bag 4 is removed from its strongbox 5 or at the latest at the end of the day, for example. The bags 4 can then be transferred later for counting and any differences in the transmitted value and the actual counted value can be reconciled. This enables the value of the cash taken to be banked at as early a time as possible and there is no delay whilst the bank notes are physically counted. Where there are plural currency receipt points 1, they can be monitored remotely. Indeed, all currency receipt points 1 for a chain of shops, supermarkets or other retail outlets can be connected to a central control computer, enabling remote monitoring and control of all of the currency receipt points 1 for the chain from a single site if desired.
An embodiment of the present invention has been described with particular reference to the example illustrated. However, it will be appreciated that variations and modifications may be made to the example described within the scope of the present invention.
