Abstract
A railing system comprises a plurality of spaced posts (11) and a plurality of panels (12) located between the posts (11). Upper and lower rails (22,23) of the panels (12) are connected to the posts (11) when end portions of the rails (22,23) are received in corresponding annular bosses (15) which are removably locatable on the posts (11).
Description
A Railina System
This invention relates to a railing system comprising a plurality of spaced posts and panels located between the posts and secured thereto.
Railing systems known hitherto comprise panels in which rails are provided with end plates for attachment to corresponding posts. With such known systems, if a panel becomes damaged, it is necessary to fabricate a replacement panel with end plates juxtaposed rails of the replacement panel such that the end plates abut corresponding surfaces of the posts. Therefore, it is necessary for replacement panels to be manufactured with a fair degree of precision.
It is desirable to provide a railing system in which the cost of providing replacement panels is substantially reduced.
According to the present invention, there is provided a railing system comprising a plurality of spaced posts and panels located between the posts, the panels including rails, wherein the posts carry bosses each for receiving-.å corresponding end portion of a corresponding rail so as to connect posts and rails one to another, the bosses being removably locatable on the posts.
A railing system in accordance with the present invention therefore provides an advantage compared with railing systems known hitherto in that it is not necessary to provide rails of panels with end plates for attachment to posts and replacement panels may easily be adapted to size simply by cutting end portions of the rails.
Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of one embodiment of a railing system in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a top view of a boss of the system shown in
Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a plan view of the boss shown in Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a railing system 10 comprising a plurality of posts 11 and a plurality of panels 1 2 located between the posts 11.
Each of the posts 11 is of elongate tubular configuration having a lower portion 13 of substantially rectangular transverse cross section for insertion into ground 14. Each post 11 carries upper and lower associated annular bosses 15 each having a central aperture 16, an annular front surface 17 and a concave rear surface 18. Each boss 15 is provided with a pair of bores 19,20 extending through the front surface 17 and located adjacent opposite end portions of a diameter of the aperture 16. The outer circumferential surface 21 of each of the bosses 15 may be fluted or provided with other surface decoration.
Each of the panels 12 is provided with upper and lower spaced parallel rails 22,23 end portions of which are of a diameter such as to be received within the apertures 16 of corresponding bosses 15.
In use, the posts 11 are provided with tapped and threaded apertures (not shown) for receiving screws (not shown) the shanks of which extend through corresponding bores 19,20 of bosses 15 whereby the panels 12 and posts 11 are connected one to another.
If a panel 12 becomes damaged, it is replaced by unscrewing the screws securing upper and lower bosses 15 carried on a post 1 2 adjacent an end portion of the damaged panel 11.
The bosses 15 thus are disconnected from the corresponding post 11 and, in consequence, the damaged panel 12 may be removed. A replacement panel 12 is then positioned so that end portions of rails 22,23 thereof are located in secured bosses 15 from which the damaged panel was removed and the removed bosses 15 then are located at opposite end portions of the rails 22,23 of the replacement panel 12 and are resecured to the corresponding post 12.
Claims (5)
1. A railing system comprising a plurality of spaced posts
and panels located between the posts, the panels
including rails, wherein the posts carry bosses each
for receiving a corresponding end portion of a
corresponding rail so as to connect posts and rails one
to another, the bosses being removably locatable on the
posts.
2. A system as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the posts are of
circular transverse cross section and the bosses are
each provided with a concave rear surface for abutment
with a corresponding post.
3. A system as claimed in Claim 2 wherein each boss is
provided with apertures for receiving means for
securing the boss to a corresponding post.
4. A system as claimed in Claim 3 wherein each boss is of
circular configuration and the apertures are located
adjacent opposite ends of a diameter of the boss.
5. A railing system substantially as hereinbefore
described and as illustrated in the accompanying
drawings.
