Abstract

An air gun, eg an air rifle has a detachable magazine (figure 3) capable of holding a quantity of pellets. The magazine charged with pellets is slideably located in a guide (16) adjacent to the breach of the gun barrel and initially against a stop (21) on a rotatable crank (17) having an integrally formed half gear pinion 26. A slideable gear rack (Fig 5) supported in a bearing is in contact with a cocking link (14). The action of cocking the gun rotates the crank a full 360{ via the action of the gear rack. Through the cooperation of stop 21 and a notch (24) on the magazine, the latter is indexed across the exit orifice of the cylinder giving alignment of the exit orifice, the breach of the barrel and the pellet held in the magazine.

Description

SINGLE ACTION COCKING AND LOADING AIR GUN This invention relates to a single action cocking and loading air gun.
Air guns are well established weapons and follow a proven configuration of having a spring loaded or gas charged piston contained within a cylinder in line with a barrel.
To prepare the weapon for shooting the piston is retracted (cocked) against spring or gas pressure by means of leverage.
A barrel if pivotted or a seperate lever, both connected to the piston through a linkage provides this means. The piston is held in this cocked position by a trigger mechanism.Upon cocking the breach of the barrel is exposed and facilitates the entry of a pellet (shot) which is placed usually by hand into the breach, whereupon the breach is closed by returning either the barrel or the seperate lever to its starting point.
The weapon being now both cocked and loaded and ready for use.
The fore described process although typical is slow and requires a two-fold action of firstly having to cock the gun and secondly placing a pellet into the breach.
According to the present invention there is provided a single action cocking and loading air gun comprising a barrel which is pivotal,a spring loaded or gas charged piston slideable within a cylinder,an articulated cocking linkage connecting the barrel or lever to the piston, the area adjascent to the exit orofice of the cylinder adapted to provide means for guiding a magazine in the form of an indexable rod,the magazine capable of holding more than one pellet and is slideable across the exit orofice of the cylinder and the breach of the barrel and provide pellet alignment with the breach, means for indexing the magazine coincident with the action of cocking the gun by retracting the piston against'spring or gas pressure through leverage from the barrel or alternative means rendering the weapon ready for use.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:- Figure 1 shows in perspective the essential working parts of the air gun.
Figure 2 shows a sectional view of the area adjascent to the exit orofice of the cylinder and the breach of the barrel.
Figure 3 shows the magazine in perspective.
Figure 4 illustrates three views of the crank pinion.
Figure 5 describes the gear rack link arm.
Figure 6 shows the cooperation of the crank journal and the indexing notches of the magazine.
Figure 7 illustrates the position of the cocking linkage and the gear rack arm during the process of cocking.
Referring to the drawing the gun comprises a cylinder 11 having a spring loaded or gas charged piston (not shown) and a barrel 12.The barrel is pivotal around a fulcrum pin 13 and is shown as the cocking lever in Figure 7.A linkage 14 connects the barrel to the piston providing the means to retract the piston to the rear of the cylinder against spring or gas resistance until the piston is trapped by the trigger mechanism 15.A slot 16 located across the exit end of the cylinder 11,the dimensions of which correspond with the cross sectional dimensions of the magazine shown Figure 3.A cylindrical bore 17 provides a bearing for the crank pinion described in Fig 4.
Bore 17 is at right angles to and interconnects with slot 16 in such manner as to permit the full rotation of the crank pinion.Beneath bore 17 is provided a guide 18 which will allow the reciprocal movement of the gear rack link illustrated in Figure S.The teeth of the gear rack link are permitted to engage and mesh with teeth of the half gear of the crank pinion. The non geared end of the gear rack link containing slot 22 locates with link 14 at the point where link 14 combines with the piston.
In order to cock and load the gun the portings 20 of the magazine are charged with pellets, the magazine is then fed into slot 16 until the first notch 23 of the magazine abuts a stop provided by journal pin 21 which is in its normal position. The barrel securing latch (not shown) is released and the barrel 12 is pulled around pin 13,link4 which is articulatedly secur -ed to the barrel is moved in the direction of arrow 19 against spring or gas pressure until the piston (not shown) which in turn is driven by link 14 engages with the trigger mechanism 15 and is trapped. When travelling in the direction of arrow 19 link 14 connects with the gear rack link shown in Figure 5 through slot 22 and carries the gear rack link with it.The movement of the gear rack link in the direction of arrow 19 causes the teeth of the rack 25 to engage the teeth of the half gear 26 of the crank pinion shown in Figure 4,and rotates the crank pinion through 1800. In so doing the journal pin 21 is moved from its normal position and repositioned with -in a driving notch 24 of the magazine. With the piston held by the trigger mechanism barrel 12 is freely moved towards its starting position taking linkage 14 and the gear rack link in the opposite direction to arrow l9.Moving in this direction the second gear rack 27 of the gear rack link engages with the teeth of the half gear of the crank pinion 26 and rotates the 0 crank pinion through a further 180,the journal pin 21 is returned to its normal position and in the process has indexed the magazine across the face of the cylinder 11 aligning the pellet held in the magazine with the exit orofice 32 of the cylinder through the cooperation of the journal pin 21 and driving notch 24 of the magazine. With the journal pin in its normal position face 30 of the gear rack link abuts face 31 of the crank pinion thus resisting further rotation of the crank pinion and locating the magazine correctly for shooting. When the barrel is fully returned to its original position and the barrel securing latch engaged complete alignment of the barrel, the exit orofice of the cylinder and the pellet held in the magazine is obtained.
To recock and load the gun after shooting the proceedure as described above is repeated until the pellet holding capacity of the magazine is exhausted.
