Description

QUICK RELEASE BATTERY CONNECTOR
This invention relates to a quick release connection for electrical leads to a battery employed on a vehicle.
Vehicles are required to carry a substantial battery both for starting the vehicle engine and for a wide variety of vehicle components from 5 essentials such as lights to optional features such as in-car entertainment.
The connections from the battery leads to the starter motor and wiring loom must provide good electrical contact and must remain firmly in place despite the jolts and vibration imparted to the vehicle body by road humps and other surface hazards and by the motion of the vehicle engine 10 and its related moving parts. Vehicle batteries thus carry substantial terminals, commonly in the form of posts, for positive and negative connections. In turn, the leads are thick and are connected to the respective terminals by substantial connector pieces. The terminals may be flat but commonly are substantially cylindrical.
15 Traditionally the connector pieces to battery terminals have been secured to them in a manner which defies easy removal. Commonly the leads carry a substantial end piece shaped to match the shape of the terminal and having one or more orifices through which a threaded bolt is passed and is firmly secured to the terminal by a corresponding threaded nut.
20 In all circumstances the quick release or connection of the battery power is preferable and convenient. Battery leads are however often difficult to release and may require tools that are not standard or not readily available. In a vehicle accident the quick release of these leads is usually a priority for safety. Removal of the leads from the terminals has thus 25 required the use of suitably sized spanners (wrenches) or a screwdriver and even with these is often difficult because the connectors tend to become corroded to the terminals. Moreover while suitable spanners etc. may be available in a workshop they are often not to hand at the roadside
in the event of an emergency which requires disconnection of the battery from the rest of the vehicle. For example in the event of an electrical fire in a vehicle, rapid removal of the battery may be essential in order to remove the power feeding the fault responsible for the fire. Vehicle 5 damage can also hinder battery connector removal.
Proposals have been made for easy release connectors for battery terminals but have not satisfied the requirement to remain in place despite vehicle jolts and motion. The present invention has the objective of providing means for the easy and rapid application and removal of battery 10 leads.
According to the present invention there is provided a connector for use in combination with a clamp for attachment to the terminal of a vehicle battery, the connector comprising a lever-operated cam to bear in a releasable manner against the clamp to secure or release the clamp to or 15 from the terminal.
The lever-operated cam is pivotally connected to the head of a threaded bolt provided with a nut, the bolt passing through aligned holes in the clamp and engaging the nut on the other side of the clamp.
The invention thus offers the advantage of a quick release attachment to a 20 battery terminal, in which following a hand tightening of the bolt and nut a single movement of a lever either secures the clamp to the battery terminal or releases it therefrom.
The connector should be of a durable conductive metal, for example copper aluminium or iron. The lever is preferably precision cut, for 25 example by using laser-cutting techniques, and should be of sufficient material thickness and strength to ensure its operational performance. A further advantage of the invention is that the connector can be sized to fit
any size or shape of battery terminal and is thus applicable to all types and sizes of vehicle batteries and possibly other applications as well.
The connector for the terminal of a vehicle battery according to the invention is further described by way of non-limiting example with 5 reference to the accompanying figures, in which: Figure 1 is a fragmental side view of a battery and one of its terminals with the connector in situ in a closed or locked position; 10 Figure 2 is a plan view of a detail of the connector; Figure 3 is a side view of a further detail of the connector; Figure 4 is a side view corresponding to Figure 3; and Figure 5 is a part section end view of the details shown in Figure 3.
15 Referring to the drawings there is shown generally at 1 a battery terminal connector for connecting a power cable (not shown) to a terminal post 2 of a battery 4 only a fragment of which is illustrated.
The connector 1 is intended for use with a clamp 6 of substantial horse shoe shape with a collar part 8 for embracing the terminal post 2 and an 20 opening 10 defined by apertured side arms 12, 14, the apertures (not shown) being provided for the reception therethrough across the opening 10 of a bolt 16 provided with a nut 18 for securement of the bolt to the arms. The connector of the present invention comprises the bolt 16 having a 25 head 20 pierced with a through hole 22 and having two diametrally
opposed flats 24, 26, a shank 28 of the bolt being suitably threaded as at 30 for engagement by the nut 18.
The connector 1 further comprises an L-shaped lever 40 having one part 42 thereof provided as an operating limb with a stepped finger grip 44, 5 and further part formed in the manner of a yoke 46 with offset cams 48, the yoke 46 being provided with a through bores 50 for the reception of a pivot pin 52.
The lever 40 is arranged as seen in Figure 1 to engage the head 20 of the bolt 16 through the agency of the pivot pin 52 which extends through the 10 bores 50 in the yoke 46 and the hole 22. The pin may be in the form of a rivet with the usual heads 54 to secure the pin to the yoke 46, allowing pivot motion.
In position the clamp 6 circumscribes the terminal post 2 of the battery 4 with its collar part 8 in contact with the post 2 and the bolt 16 of the 15 connector, to which is pivotally attached the lever 40, bridges the side arms 12, 14 with the nut 18, which may be a wing-nut, engaging the thread 30 and abutting one of the side arms 12, 14.
When the connector 1 is in position as aforesaid, the wing-nut 18 is finger tightened so as to contact the relevant side arm 14. Thereafter in order 20 to tighten the clamp 6 onto the terminal post 2 the lever 40 is pivoted to bring the cams 48 into engagement with the other of the side arms 12, 14 and pivotal rotation of the lever causes the arms 12, 14 to be brought together by the cam action drawing the bolt 16 with its nut 18 thereby to clamp the connector to the post 2. The cams 48 are so designed in 25 combination with the positioning of the pivot axis defined by the pin 52 that once the lever 40 reaches its overcentre position it snaps over the top of the terminal post 2 to complete its operational travel to effect clamping. The clamping position is shown in Figure 1. Release of the connector 1 from the clamping mode as just described involves the
pivoting of the lever 40 in the opposite direction and to relieve the cams 48 from their clamping contact with the relevant side arm 12, 14.
The invention thus provides a simple and yet effective quick-release connector for a vehicle battery terminal without the need to use spanners 5 or other tools, operation of the connector merely involves handtightening of the nut and then pivoting one lever in either direction dependent upon the need to clamp or release the connector.
