An adjustable strap comprises a web 2 attached at one end to a buckle, the buckle having a housing 12, a reel 1 rotatably mounted with the housing 12 and about which the web 2 is wound, means 3 to enable the reel to be rotated manually, a clutch mechanism 6 to permit the reel to be rotated in only the direction 16 to wind the web 2 onto the reel 1, and a release lever 9 for releasing the clutch 6 to enable the reel to rotate in both directions. The reel 1 may be rotated manually by knob 3. The clutch mechanism 6 may have a ratchet wheel 6 and a pawl 32 pivotally mounted in the housing 12 and attached to the release lever 9, a spring 11 may also be provided to return the ratchet mechanism 6, one end of the spring 11 may be attached to the lever 9 and the other to the housing 12. The housing 12 may further be provided with a slotted arrangement 15 for attachment of the strap, to form a complete loop, and the plane of the web 2 on entering the housing 12 may be either parallel or perpendicular to the axis of the reel 1. A handle may be provided on the housing 12 to enable an item encircled by the strap to be carried manually, and a pin or a padlock may be used through means 17 on the release lever 9 to lock the clutch/ratchet mechanism 6.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
ADJUSTABLE STRAP This invention relates to adjustable strap arrangements.
The device is intended to replace the widely used friction buckle tensioning method. This makes tensioning of strapping or webbing arrangements much easier and more precise and reduces loose dangling straps. Typical uses are the tensioning of: rucksack straps, bicycle/motor cycle item carrying straps, golf trolley bag securing straps, child car seat straps, lap seat belts, child high chair straps, pram/buggie straps, climbing equipment, rescue equipment, sports equipment, military equipment, medical equipment, tourniquet applications with built in strain measurement, large releasable cable straps, strap for staked trees, etc. Versions for clothing, such as dungaree shoulder straps, braces or trouser/dress belts could be developed. It may also be used as a luggage, parcel, package or equipment carrying strap where a carry handle could be incorporated. A strap locking feature for certain applications where additional security is required may be added.
According to the present invention there is provided an adjustable strap comprising a web attached at one end to a buckle, the buckle having a housing, a reel rotatably mounted within the housing and about which said end of the web is wound, means for enabling the reel to be rotated manually relative to the housing, a clutch mechanism for permitting the reel to be rotated in only the direction to wind the web onto the reel and a release lever for releasing the clutch mechanism so as to enable the reel to rotate in both directions.
Specific embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :- Figure 1 shows a plan view of the simple reel version Figure 2 shows a side view of the simple reel version Figure 3 shows a front view of the simple reel version Figure 4 shows a side view of the simple reel version with the ratchet lever actuated Figure 5 shows a 3D drawing of the simple reel version Figure 6 shows a front view of the turn through 900 version with locking feature Figure 7 shows a side view of the turn through 900 version with locking feature Figure 8 shows a plan view of the turn through 90 version with locking feature Figure 9 shows the torsion spring detail of the turn through 900 version with locking feature
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Figure 10 shows detail of the locking mechanism of the turn through 900 version with locking feature With reference to figures 1, 2,3 & 4 one possible version of the design consists of a reel (1) onto which the strapping or webbing (2) is coiled by the operation of a knob (3) concentrically attached to the reel. The strapping in this case is attached to the spindle of the reel by a plate (4) and 2 screws (5). Many other methods of attachment are possible. Concentrically attached to the reel is a ratchet mechanism consisting of a ratchet wheel (6) and a lever (9) with a combined pawl (32). The lever pivots about a pin (10). This allows the strapping to be wound in the direction of arrow 7 by turning the knob (3) in the direction of arrow 16 with the users fingers. The lever (9) of the ratchet mechanism is returned by a spring (11) (in this case a tension spring) to the locked position. The reel, ratchet mechanism and knob are supported in a housing (12). One end of the spring is attached to the lever and the other to the housing. By applying tension to the strapping in the direction of arrow 14 the ratchet mechanism locks automatically. By pressing the ratchet lever (or release lever) in the direction of arrow 13 the strapping is free to be withdrawn by pulling the strapping in the direction of arrow 14. With this arrangement strapping systems can be extended, tensioned and released readily.
The collection of parts excluding the strap/web may be described as a buckle. The strapping can be fitted as a continuous loop with the free end attached to the housing permanently or detachable. Alternatively the housing can be fixed to a structure via a separate piece of strapping or directly to the structure. This design shows a slotted arrangement (15) for attachment of the strapping. By positioning a pin or a padlock through the hole (17) the ratchet mechanism may be locked, as full operation of the lever would not be possible.
Figure 5 shows a solid model interpretation of the smaller device with a female snap in locking feature as part of the housing and a male snap in feature on the end of the strapping.
Figures 6,7, 8,9 & 10 show an alternative design whereby the strapping (31) is turned through 900 by the addition of a strapping guide (20) angled at approximately 450 to the reel (28) centerline. This arrangement incorporates a hook like feature (21) whereby the strapping, which has a ring, attached to it (22) can be hooked on to the device after being wrapped around the object being carried or secured. This device also shows a locking feature such that when locked the strapping (that is now hooked into position) cannot be removed. This is achieved by an adaptation of the ratchet lever (23) and by the incorporation of a retention protrusion (24). The ratchet lever is returned to the locked position in this case by a torsion spring (25). Placing a padlock or a pin through the hole (26) in the lever will lock the lever in the locked position. Additionally this device shows a carry handle (30). The reel (28) and turning knob (29) in this design are at ideally 900 to the general direction of the strapping and is positioned on top of the device. The ratchet (27) and ratchet mechanism operates as described previously for the small reel version
