Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
A PLUG-IN COUPLING The present invention relates to a plug-in coupling for removably coupling a first member and a second member, the plug-in coupling comprising a resiliently deformable female coupling part having a spherical cup, an insertion portion adjacent the open end of the spherical cup, and a tubular wall integral with the insertion portion and circumscribing the spherical cup in spaced relationship thereto, and a resiliently deformable male coupling part having a spherical head and a securing portion fixed to the second member, with the plug-in coupling being adapted to be engaged by having the spherical head snap into the spherical cup.
A plug-in coupling of this type has become known from De 198 36 108 Al of applicant. In this plug-in coupling cordal stiffening webs with radial ribs are disposed in the gap between the tubular wall and the spherical cup of the female coupling part. The female coupling part is adapted to be laterally or axially inserted into a socket of the associated member such that the tubular (cylindrical) wall engages a corresponding wall of the socket. The wall of the socket may be provided with a radially inwards extending peripheral edge which is adapted to snap into an annular groove at the cylindrical wall of the female coupling part.
This plug-in coupling has proven to be very successful in practice. The tubular wall with the cordal stiffening webs and radial ribs ensures safe retention and excellent vibration dampening characteristics of the plug-in coupling. However, this plug-in coupling can be used to couple only members one of which is provided with a respective socket for receiving the tubular wall of the female coupling part.
The German utility model no. 299 20 379.4 of applicant discloses a similar plug-in coupling which however has a female coupling part without a tubular wall and without stiffening webs and ribs therebetween. Instead thereof, the wall thickness of the spherical cup and the integral securing portion has been increased. The female coupling part of this plug-in coupling is fixed to the associated member by being inserted into a securing hole of the member, with the member snapping into an annular groove of the female coupling part. While this plug-in coupling has also proven to be successful in practice, improved dampening properties for certain applications are desirable.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
It is an object of the present invention to provide a plug-in coupling of the above type wherein the female coupling part can be fixed to the associated member in a very simple manner while the plug-in coupling exhibits excellent vibration dampening properties.
To this end the insertion portion of the female coupling part includes an annular flange and the wall of the female coupling part has a plurality of circumfer- entially spaced holding segments extending from the outer surface of the wall in an outward direction and arranged such that the female coupling part can be inserted in a matingly dimensioned securing hole of the first member in order to clamplingly hold the first member between the holding segments and the annular flange so as to fix the female coupling part to the first member.
In the plug-in coupling of the present invention the female coupling part can be fixed to the associated member in an extremely simple manner by simply inserting the female coupling part into the associated securing hole of the first member whereupon the first member automatically will be snappingly engaged between the annular flange and the holding segments. The respective member which is of plate shape at least in the securing area does not need to be provided with an own socket for receiving the female coupling part. The tubular wall of the female coupling part and stiffening webs which preferably are disposed between the tubular wall and the spherical cup provide for excellent vibration dampening properties of the plug-in coupling.
In a preferred modification of the present invention the insertion portion of the female coupling part has a conical inner surface provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced projections which are adapted to engage the pin-shaped securing portion of the male coupling portion to provide for a stabilizing effect.
If more than one plug-in coupling is required to couple a pair of members, it may be preferable to integrally interconnect the female coupling parts of the plug-in couplings by at least one connecting arm.
The invention will be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view of a plug-in coupling in its engaged condition; fig. 2 is a perspective view of the plug-in coupling in fig. 1;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
fig. 3 is a side elevation of the female coupling part of the plug-in coupling; fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view in the direction of arrows IV-IV in fig. 5; fig. 5 is a bottom view of the female coupling part; fig. 6 is a top view of the female coupling part; fig. 7 is a perspective view of the female coupling part; fig. 8 is a perspective view from above of a pair of interconnected female coupling part; fig. 9 is a bottom view of the two female coupling parts in fig. 8.
In figs. 1 and 2 a plug-in coupling is shown in its assembled and engaged condition to removably couple a pair of members 2 and 4. The members 2 and 4 may be of any material; the member 2 is of plate shape at least in the area of the plug-in coupling and is provided with a securing hole 3. The member 2 may be e. g. an engine cover of an automotive vehicle, and the member 4 may be the engine block thereof.
The plug-in coupling comprises a female coupling part 6 and a male coupling part 8 each of which is removably connected to its associated member 2 and, respectively, member 4 as will be explained in more detail below. The female coupling part 6 is made of a material having vibration dampening properties such as a thermoplastic elastomeric material or rubber, while the male coupling part 8 is made of e. g. a plastic material containing a filler or of metal.
The female coupling part 6 which is shown in figs. 3 to 7 in more detail comprises a spherical cup 10, an insertion portion 12 adjacent the open end of the spherical cup 10, an annular flange 14 having a sealing lip 16, and a tubular wall 18. The annular flange 14 is integrally provided at the bottom of the tubular wall 18 which is of cylindrical shape in the embodiment as shown. The tubular wall 18 surrounds the spherical cup 10 in spaced relationship, with cordal stiffening webs 20 being disposed in the gap between the spherical cup 10 and the wall 18, see in particular figs. 6 and 7. The cordal stiffening webs 20 which are of slightly arcuate shape have their ends integrally connected with the wall 18 and have their intermediate portions integrally connected with the spherical cup 10.
From the tubular wall 18 extend radially projecting holding segments 22 which are of a shape as shown in the figures. More precisely, the holding segments
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
22 have inclined top surfaces 24 for facilitating insertion thereof into the securing hole 3 of the member 2. The holding segments 22 have bottom surfaces 28 of inverted roof shape for reasons that will be explained in more detail below. Furthermore, the holding segments 22 have part circular outer surfaces 26 which also facilitate insertion thereof into the securing hole 3 of the member 2.
The insertion portion 12 has a conical inner surface 30 from which a plurality of circumferentially spaced ribs 32 extend. The ribs 32 (i. e. five ribs in the embodiment shown) are of rectangular cross-section or peripheral shape as shown in particular in fig. 5. The ribs 32 improve the stability of the plug-in coupling as will be explained in more detail below.
In the embodiment as shown there are provided three stiffening ribs 20 and three holding segments 22 which are aligned to each other in radial directions, with the stiffening webs 20 and the holding segments 22 being of the same circumferential extent. This structure facilitates insertion of the female coupling part 6 into the securing hole 3 of the member 2 as will be also explained in more detail below.
The male coupling part 8 (see fig. 1) comprises a spherical head 34 and a pin-shaped securing portion 36 which are integrally connected to each other via an annular groove 37. The spherical head 34 has a tool recess 38 for engaging a drive element. The securing portion 36 is fixedly connected to a threaded bolt 40 which is engaged in a matingly shaped threaded bore of the member 4. It should be noted, however, that the male coupling part 8 could be fixed to the member 4 in any other convenient manner.
For assembly of the plug-in coupling the two coupling parts 6 and 8 are connected to their respective members 2, and respectively, 4. To this end the female coupling part 6 is inserted into the securing hole 30 of the member 2 from below.
While the edge of the securing hole 3 slides along the tapered top surface 24 of the holding segments 22, the tubular wall 18 is"folded"inwards. Since the holding segments 22 and the stiffening webs 20 are radially aligned and are of substantially the same circumferential extent, the respective portions of the wall 18 may be readily deformed inwards. Therefore the holding segments 22 may have relatively large radial dimensions without any substantial forces being necessary for inserting the female coupling part into the securing hole 3. For example the radial dimensions of
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
the holding segments 2 may be approximately 1/8 to 1/10 of the outer diameter of the cylindrical wall 18.
At the end of the inserting operation the member 2 snaps into the space between the angular flange 14 and the holding segments 22. More precisely, the member 2 is snappingly engaged between the sealing lip 16 of the angular flange 14 and the roof-shaped bottom surface 28 of the holding segments 22. The roof shape of the bottom surface 28 of the holding segments 22 allows to position members 2 of variable thickness (within a certain range) between the holding segments 22 and the angular flange 14. This is the result of the resiliency of the apex of the roof shape and variable deformations of the holding segments 22 in an axial direction. If for example the female coupling part 6 has an outer diameter in the order of 15 to 20 mm, it may be used in connection with members 2 of a thickness in the order of 1.5 to 2. 5 mm.
As shown in particular in figs 3 and 6, the tubular wall 18 is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced radiused noses 42 adjacent the annular flange 14. The noses 42 provide for a tight fit of the coupling part 6 within the securing hole 3 of the member 2.
The male coupling part 8 is connected to the member 4 by threading the bolt 40 into the respective threaded bore of the member 4.
For engagement of the plug-in coupling the only thing necessary is axially to insert the male coupling part into the female coupling part 6 until the spherical head 34 snaps into the spherical cup 10. When the spherical head 34 is in this position more than half of its outer surface will be engaged by the spherical cup 10. The ribs 32 engage the pin-shaped securing portion 36 of the male coupling part 8. The ribs 32 provide for stabilization of the plug-in coupling. More particularly, the ribs 32 prevent inadvertent removal of the spherical head 34 from the spherical cup 10 and inadvertent removal of the coupling part 6 from the member 2.
When two or more plug-in couplings are required to interconnect a pair of members 2,4, an arrangement as shown in figs. 8 and 9 wherein the female coupling parts 6a, 6b of the plug-in couplings are interconnected by connecting arms 44,46 may be used. In the embodiment as shown the connecting arms comprise straight connecting arms 44 extending along a straight line through the centres of
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
the coupling parts 6a, 6b, and a pair of connecting arms 46 disposed on either side of the connecting arm 44 and being of rectangularly angled shape as shown in figs.
8 and 9. The connecting arms 44,46 each are integral with the annular flanges 14 of the coupling parts 6a, 6b.
While the straight connecting arm 44 is of a smooth rectangular cross-section, the angled connecting arms 46 are of an U-shaped cross-section as shown in fig. 9. They extend below the common plane of the bottom surfaces of the coupling parts 6a, 6b for a predetermined amount. This amount is selected such that the collecting arms 46 engage the top surface of the member 4 when the plug-in coupling is in its engaged condition. As a result the connecting arms 46 prevent the plug-in coupling from pivoting about a line extending through the centres of the coupling parts 6a, 6b.
Therefore the connection arms 44,46 provide not only for simplified handling and assembly of the plug-in couplings, but also for improved retention of the female coupling parts to the associated member. It should be understood that connecting arms similar to connecting arms 44,46 may be used to interconnect more than two plug-in couplings.
