Description

2360249 PUBLICATION FORMAT This invention concerns improvements in or
relating to publication formats, and particularly but not exclusively books.
A wide range of publication formats and especially book formats are presently available. Publishers are continually seeking new formats, and especially in children's books and other areas, to differentiate their products.
According to the present invention there is provided a publication format, the format comprising a first front cover, a common rear cover, a second front cover, and pages provided between at least one of the front covers and the rear cover.
Preferably, pages are provided respectively between the first front cover and a first side of the rear cover and the second front cover and a second opposite side of the rear cover.
Alternatively storage means are provided between one of the front covers and the rear cover. The storage means may comprise a plurality of locations for receiving diff erent items.
The publication format preferably comprises a book.
The front covers and/or rear cover may be made of board.
The first and second front covers and rear cover may be integrally formed.
In an alternative arrangement, each front cover may be provided with a respective rear cover, with the two rear covers being mounted together to form the common rear cover, and preferably by gluing.
2 Spine formations are preferably provided respectively between each of the front covers and the rear cover.
The board may be covered in material, which material may comprise case cover material which may be in the form of two sleeves, each sleeve extending from a respective one of the front covers and overlapping each other on the rear cover. The ends of the sleeves are preferably located adjacent the respective spine formations.
A separate board may be provided respectively for each of the front covers and the rear cover, and perhaps also for each spine formation, with the boards being held together by the sleeves of material.
The first and second sets of pages may be of the same size and/or material. Any printing on the respective first and second sets of pages is preferably orientated the same way.
The or each set of pages may be case-bound, and desirably with the end most pages of the or each set adhered respectively to one of the front covers or the rear cover. The pages may be of paper.
Alternatively, the pages may comprise boards, which may be of the same material as the front and rear covers, and in this instance the common rear cover may comprise two rear covers mounted together.
The boards which form the common rear cover may also extend to form one side of a page between the rear cover and the respective other front cover.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view frorn above of a first book according to the present invention in an open condition; 3 Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the book of Fig. 1 in a closed condition; Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic plan view of a second book according to the present invention in an open condition; Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic perspective view from above of a third book according to the invention in a partially open condition; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of Fig. 4 but from below.
Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings show a book 10. The book 10 comprises first and second front covers 12 and 14 and a common rear cover 16. First and second sets of paper pages 18, 20 are provided respectively between the first front cover 12 and one side of the rear cover 16, and the second front cover 14 and the opposite side of the rear cover 16. Respective spine formations 22, 24 are provided between the front covers 12 and 14, and the rear cover 16.
The front cover 12, 14 and rear cover 16 are each formed from a respective piece of binding board, with a piece of board in each spine formation 22, 24 spaced a short distance from the board in the respective covers 12, 14 or 16, to permit folding of the board. Each set of pages 18, 20 are case-bound with the end of each set 18, 20 glued respectively to one of the front covers 12, 14 or rear cover 16.
The front covers 12, 14, rear cover 16 and spine formations 22, 24 are covered with a case cover material in the form of two sleeves, with each sleeve extending respectively from the free end of a one of the front covers 12, 14 and overlapping on the rear cover 16, with the ends 26 of the sleeves located adjacent a respective one of the spine formations 22, 24. The case cover material holds the book together.
4 Fig. 3 of the drawings shows a book 30 in the form of a board book. In this instance the pages are provided by a plurality of V-shaped section pieces of board 32, with each page comprising a limb of two adjacent Vs mounted together.
The book 30 comprises a first board 34 (shown by a solid line) which defines a first front cover 36, and a first hinge formation 38 which leads into a rear cover 40. The board 34 extends from the cover 40 via a fold 42 to form one side of the last page of a second set of pages 44.
A second board 46 (shown by an enclosed broken line) extends in a similar manner to define a second front cover 48 and second hinge formation 50, and is mounted to the first board 34 to provide the rear cover 40. The second board 46 further extends via a fold 52 to form one side of the last page of a first set of pages 54.
Each of the set of pages 44, 54 is supplemented in this example by three V-shaped section board pieces 32 extending respectively between the boards 34, 46.
Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings show a book 60 which is similar to the book 10 except that rather than a second set of pages a storage arrangement 62 is provided between the front cover 14 and the rear cover 16. The arrangement 62 comprises a plastics material moulding with a plurality of different shaped recesses 64 to receive for instance paint brushes 66, paint blocks 68, an eraser 70 and pencil sharpener 72, water or a pencil 74. The items stored in the arrangement 62 could be used to decorate the first set of pages 18.
It is to be realised that the storage arrangement could take many different forms. For instance, if the set of pages related to natural history topics or the like, this arrangement could hold a magnifying glass and other appropriate tools or accessories.
There is thus described a book format which provides two books or a book and storage arrangement within a single integral format. This is particularly suited for use with children's books, such as for instance books about opposites or cyclical stories, or books which require items which can be stored in the format. The formation is also particularly appropriate for for instance, cookery, travel or "how to" books. The format is a relatively straightforward configuration and can thus be inexpensively formed either by hand or mechanically.
Various other modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For instance, the pages may have a different configuration, and with a board book the covers needn't form a part of the pages. The pages and covers may be of a different material or grade of material. The two sets of pages may be of the same number, size, format and material, or alternatively could be different in any of these respects. Different materials could be used for the board and any covering thereon.
Whilst the embodiments describe a book, the invention is equally applicable to other publication formats such as magazines, brochures etc.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
