Abstract
A housing 10 containing an audible alarm and a battery is attached, e.g. magnetically, to a washing machine 13. The housing is coupled by a lead 8 to electrical contacts 7 which are inserted into a capsule 9 filled with moisture absorbing material. In the presence of water beneath the washing machine, the circuit is completed and the alarm is actuated.
Description
1 2355564 Washing Machine Rood Alarm This inveMlon relates to a washing
machine flood alarm, though not exclusively to a washing machine flood alarm.
Alarms are known that operate by many means, eg. P.I.r. magnetic, vibration, bi- metal, mechanical, smoke etc. Etc. All these switching arrangements are either difficult or Impossible to implement as alarms to detect flood-water or leaks at their onset.
That electricity can travel through water is also known.
With this invention I provide by means of capillary action a device that bridges two electrical contacts physically, but makes no electrical contact until wet, thereby providing the means to sound an alarm at the onset of a washing machine leak or flood.
The device attached to an extention lead provides the means to locate the device in an optimum posfti. on beneath a wash!. ng machine and away from day to day kitchen spills The extension lead attached to a battery operated alarm provides the means to sound the alarm.
The housing for the alarm is provided With the means, magnetic or other, to attach the housing close to or onto the washer to be alarmed, a few inches above floor level away from possible rising floodwater.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying dmMng in which, Figure I shows a typical capillary action electrical contact arrangement.
Figure 2 shows a typical capillary action electrical contact arrangement with an extension lead to a typical alarm, battery and housing arrangement.
Figure 3 shows a typical position of the device on a washing machine.
Referring to the drawing the capillary action switch comprises a moisture absorbant capsule 9, electrical contacts 5 and 6, electrical contact housing 7 and a short portion of the extension fead S. The electrical contacts are shown inserted into the moisture absorbant capsule 9 phySically Suminding but making no Oleaffical contact.
Figure 2 shows a typical complete assembly of the alarm, comprising 7 and 9 the capirilary action switch attached to the extension lead 8 and the lead attached to the battery and alarm in a typical arrangement of the Invention.
Figure 3 shows a typical position of the device 10, 8, 7, 9 when attached to a washing machine 13.
