Abstract

A rail (1) of railway track comprises in cross-section a generally block-shaped body portion (4) shaped on its upper surface (5) and one side (6) to define the running surface for a flanged wheel of a railway vehicle. A continuous rail foot (7) extends directly from the side (6) of the body portion (4) and through which the rail (1) can be clamped to a continuous foundation (2). A continuous fin (9) extends from the opposite side (8) of the body portion (4) at a higher level than the rail foot (7) and through which the rail (1) can be clamped to the foundation (2). The rail (1) is fined to a transverse step (10) in the continuous foundation (2) with the fin (9) resting on the top (11) of the step, the foot (7) on the bottom (13) of the step (10) and the side (8) of the body portion (4) against the riser (12) of the step (10). The rail (1) can be designed to have the minimum cross-section, in order to reduce the acoustic radiation efficiency (the sound power radiated for a given amplitude of vibratory motion). This minimum cross-section must be combined with appropriate sound damping (3) to limit the radiating length at high frequencies. <IMAGE>

Description

Improvements relating to Railway Track This invention relates to railway track of the kind in which the rails are each supported on a longitudinally extending and continuous foundation, typically of concrete, rather than in the conventional manner on transversely extending sleepers.
The object of the invention is to provide a rail design which in association with suitably adapted continuous foundation results in reduced noise energy being radiated from the rail as compared with tonventional rails.
According to the invention, a rail of railway track comprises in cross-section a generally block-shaped body portion shaped on its upper surface and one side to define the running surface for a flanged wheel of a railway vehicle, a continuous rail foot extending directly from said one side of the body portion and through which the rail can be clamped to the foundation, and a continuous fin extending from the opposite side of the body portion at a higher level than the rail foot and through which the rail can be clamped to the foundation.
Thus the rail can be fitted to a transverse step in the foundation with the fin resting on the top of the step, the foot on the bottom of the step and said opposite side of the body portion against the riser of the step.
A rail in accordance with the invention can be designed to have the minimum cross-section, in order to reduce the accoustic radiation efficiency (the sound power radiated for a given amplitude of vibratory motion). This minimum cross-section must be combined with appropriate damping of the rail to limit the radiating length at high frequencies. Such sound damping means can advantageously be provided on the underside of the block portion and of the foot and fin. Alternatively, or additionally, it can be applied along the top of the foot and fin. Hence a large porportion of the surface of the rail can have damping applied.
The radiated noise energy from a wheel/rail system utilising rails in accordance with the invention can be further reduced by providing damped wheels on the vehicles.
One construction of railway track having rails in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a cross-section through the track, and Figure 2 is a cross-section through the track at one of the rails and to a larger scale than Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the railway track comprises rails 1 supported on a continuous foundation, in this example a concrete base 2 with a visco-elastic damping medium 3 interposed. The damping medium 3 also fulfills the function of a rail pad.
The rails 1 have a block-shaped body portion 4, the upper surface 5 and one side surface 6 define a running surface for a flanged wheel of a railway vehicle. The cross-section of the body portion 4 is deep enough to accommodate the wheel flange and substantial enough to allow wear. Extending directly from the lower end of the side surface 6 is a continuous rail foot 7 and extending directly from the opposite side 8 of the body portion 4 is continuous fin 9. The rail is clamped to the base 2 through the foot 7 and the fin 9 by, for example, conventional rail foot engaging means.
The base 2, which may be in precast sections, or be slip-form paved, serves to provide continuous support for the rail. For this purpose the base is provided with a step 10 on the top surface 11 of which the fin 9 is supported, against the riser 12 of which the side 8 of the body portion 4 is supported and on the bottom surface 13 of which the foot 7 is supported. Thus the continuous support provided by the step 10 of the base 2 restrains the rail 1 in vertical bending, ensures gauge retention and also provides a rigid backing for the visco-elastic damping material 3, so enhancing the damping effectiveness by its action as a constraining layer.
The damping material 3 in this example extends beneath the bottom of the body portion 4 and also beneath the foot 7 and fin 9. Thus, the cross-sectional profile of the rail 1 allows almost 50% of its surface area to be exposed to the influence of the damping treatment.
