Description
AUTO-REVERSE TAPE RECORDER AND/OR PLAYER
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to an auto-reverse tape recorder and/or player. In this specification, the term "tape recorder11 includes a "tape player" unless the context dictates otherwise.
Description of the Prior Art
Conventionally, an auto-reverse tape recorder comprises a motor, a rotation transmission mechanism for selectively transmitting the rotation of said motor to a pair of reel shafts, a pair of tape transfer mechanisms including a capstan and a pinch roller to selectively transport a recording tape, a tape running direction changing mechanism, including a reciprocating member, to change the rotation transmission from one reel shaft to the other, and change the operation of said pair of tape transfer mechanisms from one to the other by operating said rotation transmission mechanism, and an auto-reverse mechanism for operating said tape running direction changing mechanism by detecting an end of said tape during playback or recording.
In such a conventional auto-reverse tape recorder, if a cassette with the recording tape loosened is loaded into the recorder for recording or playback, the loosened portion of the tape jams around the pinch roller or the capstan so as to damage the tape or tape recorder.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The object of the present invention is to provide an auto-reverse tape recorder, wherein loosening of the recording tape in a cassette is eliminated before starting of recording or playback.
In accordance with one aspect of the invention, there is provided a tape recorder and/or player, having an auto-reverse mechanism, characterised by means for retaining the auto-reverse mechanism in an intermediate condition in which transmission paths for both forward and reverse reel shafts are both operative, responsive to operation of a stop mechanism. When the recorder is stopped, both reel shafts are driven. So when a tape is inserted both reels are first driven in opposite directions. Any slack in the tape is thus taken up before play, record, fast forward or reverse oprations begin. In another aspect of the invention there is provided an auto-reverse tape recorder and/or player comprising a motor, a rotation transmission mechanism for selectively transmitting the rotation of said motor to a pair of reel shafts, a pair of tape transfer mechanisms including a capstan and a pinch roller to selectively transport a recording tape, a tape running direction changing mechanism, including a reciprocating member, to change the rotation transmission from one reel shaft to the other, and change the operation of said pair of tape transfer mechanisms from one to the other by operating said rotation transmission mechanism, and an autoreverse mechanism for operating said tape running direction changing mechanism by detecting an end of said tape during playback or recording, characterised in that an intermediate position retaining means is arranged to retain said reciprocating member of said tape running direction changing mechanism in an intermediate position in response to stopping of the playback or recording, so as to provide transmission by said rotation transmission mechanism from said motor to both reel shafts.
In the other aspect of the invention, there is provided an autoreverse tape recorder comprising a motor, a rotation transmission mechanism for selectively transmitting the rotation of said motor to a pair of reel shafts, a pair of tape transfer mechanisms including a capstan and a pinch roller to selectively transport a recording tape, a tape running direction changing mechanism, including reciprocating member, to change the rotation transmission from one reel shaft to the other, and change the operation of said pair of tape transfer mechanisms from one to the other by operating said rotation transmission mechanism, an auto-reverse mechanism having respective tape end detecting means associated with both reel shafts, and a pair of reverse lock mechanisms for setting the tape end detecting means associated with a reel shaft acting as a tape supply reel to a non-detecting state, whereby when the tape reaches the end thereof, the tape end detecting means associated with the reel shaft acting as a take-up reel, detects the end of said tape, so that said autoreverse mechanism is operated to change the running direction of said tape, characterised in that an intermediate position retaining means is arranged to retain said reciprocating member of said tape running direction changing mechanism in an intermediate position in response to stopping of the playback or recording, so as to provide transmission by said rotation transmission mechanism from said motor to both reel shafts and so that when said reciprocating member is retained in its intermediate position by said intermediate position retaining means, one of the tape end detecting means is set in its detecting state, and the other in its non-detecting state.
When the tape recorder does not perform the recording or playback function (in stop or eject mode), the reciprocating member is maintained in the intermediate position by the intermediate position retaining means, so that, if playing recording or playback by loading a cassette, both reels of the cassette with the tape loosened are simultaneously rotated in tape winding directions so as to eliminate the looseness of the tape just before starting recording or playback.
When the auto-reverse mechanism operates to move the reciprocating member to one side, the recording or playback is started with the tape looseness eliminated. Particularly, in the tape recorder of Claim 3 appended to the present application, when the tape loosening is eliminated, the tape end detecting means, which is maintained in a detecting state at the side of one reel, detects the tape end to operate the auto-reverSe mechanism so as to cause the other reel, serving as the winding reel to start the recording or playback.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the reference numeral 1 represents a chassis of a tape recorder. In the approximately middle portion with reference to the right and left sides on the upper surface of the chassis, a head mounting plate 2 is mounted to reciprocate forwardly and backwardly (in the direction of arrow
A, B in Figure 1), which mounting plate 2 is biased by a spring (not shown) in one direction (in the direction of arrow A). On one side of the upper surface of the head mounting plate 2 is mounted a magnetic head 3. A pair of tape transfer mechanisms 4a, 4b and a pair of reel shafts 5a, Sb are mounted on the left and right sides of the magnetic head 3 on the tape recorder chassis 1.
The tape transfer mechanisms 4a, 4b serve to selectively transfer the tape with capstans 6a, 6b and pinch rollers 7a, 7b. A pair of flywheels 8a, 8b are respectively fixed on the lower ends of the capstans 6a, 6b under the lower surface of the chassis 1 (Figure 2).
A motor 9 having a drive shaft 9a is mounted on the underside of the chassis. An endless belt 12 passes around a pulley 10 on the shaft 9a of the motor 9, the flywheels 8a, 8b and an idle pulley 11 rotatably mounted on a shaft in a corner portion on the lower surface of the chassis 1, so that the capstans 6a, 6b are rotated by the motor 3. The pinch rollers 7a, 7b are rotatably supported on supporting frames 13a, 13b pivotably mounted on the upper surface of the chassis 1.
The supporting frames 13a, 13b are so biased by springs (not shown) that the pinch rollers 7a, 7b are separated from the capstans 6a, 6b. If the head mounting plate 2 is moved in the direction of arrow B to be in the playback (or recording) position, the magnetic head 3 contacts the tape (not shown) within the tape cassette 14, so that the mounting frames 13a, 13b pivot in one direction to cause the pinch rollers 7a, 7b to contact through the tape the capstans 6a, 6b corresponding thereto. Alternatively, if the head mounting plate 2 is moved in the direction of the arrow A, the magnetic head 3 is separated from the tape, so that both frames 13a, 13b pivot in the other direction, thus separating the pinch rollers from the capstans.
The reel shafts 5a, Sb are engaged with the reel hubs (not shown) of the tape cassette 14. Rotation detecting members 18a, 18b, rotation transmission gears 19a, 19b, and reel gears 20a, 20b are sequentially stacked on sleeves 17a, 17b with the rotation detecting members lowermost. The sleeves are mounted around metal shafts 16a, 16b whose ends are supported by shaft holders 15a, 15b mounted on the lower side of the chassis (see Figure 3).
The reel gears 20a, 20b are integrally formed with the lower ends of the reel shafts 5a, Sb.
As shown in Figure 3, the rotation of the capstans 6a, 6b is transmitted through small diameter gears 21a, 2lb fixed thereto, large diameter gears 22a, 22b engaged with the small diameter gears 21a, 21b for transmitting low speed rotation (during play back or record), and low speed rotation transmission gears 23a, 23b coaxially rotated with the large diameter gears 22a, 22b, to the rotation transmission gears l9a, l9b so as to cause the reel shafts 5a, 5b to be rotated at low speed. The rotation transmission mechanism 40 for selectively transmitting the rotation of the motor 9 to the pair of reel shafts 5a, Sb comprises the rotation transmission gears l9a, l9b small diameter gears 21a, 21b, low speed rotation transmission large diameter gears 22a, 22b, and low speed rotation transmission small diameter gears 23a, 23b.
Further, the rotation of the capstans 6a, 6b is transmitted through large diameter gears 24a, 24b fixed thereto, large diameter gears 25a, 25b engaged with the large diameter gears 24a, 24b for transmitting high speed rotation (the rotational speed at fast forwarding or rewinding) and high speed rotation transmission gears 26a, 26b coaxially rotated with the large diameter gears 25a, 25b so as to cause the reel shafts 5a, 5b to be rotated at high speed. The shafts 27a, 27b of the high speed rotation transmission large diameter gears 25a, 25b and the high speed rotation transmission small diameter gears 26a, 26b are pivotally mounted in ends of pivoting plates 28a, 28b. The other ends of the pivoting plates 28a, 28b are pivotally mounted on the chassis 1.When the pivoting plates 28a, 28b are rotated in one direction, the large diameter gears 25a, 2Sb for transmitting high speed rotation are engaged with the large diameter gears 24a, 24b of the capstans 6a, 6b while the high speed rotation transmission small diameter gears 26a, 26b are engaged with the reel gears 20a, 20b. Moreover, when the pivoting plates 28a, 28b are rotated in the other direction, the high speed rotation transmission large diameter gears 25a, 25b are separated from the large diameter gears 24a, 24b of the capstans 6a, 6b while the high speed rotation transmission small diameter gears 26a, 26b are separated from the reel gears 20a, 20b. The high speed rotation transmission large diameter gears 25a, 25b are always engaged with the large diameter gears 24a, 24b.The pivoting plates. 28a, 28b are so biased by resilient means (not shown) integrally formed therewith, that the high speed rotation transmission small diameter gears 27a, 27b are separated from the reel gears 20a, 20b. The pivoting plate 28a, 28b may change the pivoting direction by operation of high speed forwarding members 29a, 29b that are mounted on the chassis 1 against the reel shafts 5a, 5b so as to reciprocate in the same direction as the head mounting plate 2. The high speed forwarding members 29a, 29b are mounted on the lower surface of the chassis 1 to reciprocate in the same direction as the head mounting plate 2, and biased in the returning direction by return springs 30a, 30b.
When the high speed forwarding members 29a, 29b are operated, their leading ends tightly press the pivoting plates 28a, 28b, so that they are pivoted in one direction, thus taking on the high speed forwarding position.
The rotation detecting members 18a, 18b, as shown in Figure 3, maintain a constant position by partcircular counterweights 32a, 32b that are mounted on end portions of plates 31a, 31b which have central apertures 52a, 52b which accept sleeves 17a, 17b, even if the tape recorder changes its position. On opposite end portions are mounted projections 33a, 33b, whose leading ends have abutting portions 35a, 35b contacting slidably engaging projections 34a, 34b. If the rotation detecting members 18a, 18b are given a rotation force of one direction by the rotation of the reel gears 20a, 20b, the slidably engaging projections 34a, 34b slidably contact the cam surface of the annular eccentric cam 36a, 36b mounted on the approximately central portion of the lower surface of the low speed rotation transmission large diameter gears 23a, 23b.If the rotational force of the rotation detecting member 18a, 18b is lost because the reel gears 20a, 20b is stopped as the tape is wound to the end, the abutting portions 35a, 35b abut the tight pressing portions 37a, 37b of the low speed rotation transmission large diameter gears 22a, 22b in their rotation track. A pair of tape end detecting means 41a, 41b mounted on auto-reverse mechanism 42 comprise the rotation detecting members 18a, 18b, the cam slidably projections 34a, 34b, the abutting portions 35a, 35b, the eccentric cams 36a, 36b and the tight pressing portions 37a, 37b. The auto-reverse mechanism 42 detects the ends of the tape during recording or playback so as to operate tape running direction changing mechanism. The low speed rotation transmission large diameter gears 22a, 22b and the low speed rotation transmission small diameter gears 23a, 23b are respectively mounted on pivoting support 38a, 38b that are mounted on the chassis so as to pivot forwardly and backwardly about the capstans 6a, 6b in a given range. When the abutting portions 35a, 35b and the tight pressing portions 37a, 37b contact each other, the rotational force of the low speed rotation transmission large diameter gears 22a, 22b causes the pivoting supports 38a, 38b to rotate in one direction, the low speed rotation transmission small diameter gears 23a, 23b are separated from the rotation transmission gears, l9a, l9b so as to break the rotation transmission path to the reel shaft 5a or 5b. Interlocking projections 39a, 39b of the pivoting supports 38a, 38b are engaged with interlocking slots 44a, 44b of reciprocating member 43 that is mounted on the front lower portion of the chassis 1 so as to slide in the right and left directions in a given range. Interlocking slots 45a, 45b formed in the left and right portions of the reciprocating member 43 are engaged with interlocking projections 46a, 46b of the supporting frames 13a, 13b of the pinch roller 7a, 7b.When one pivoting support 38a (the right one in Figure 3) is rotated clockwise, the low speed rotation transmission small diameter gear 23a, supported thereby is separated from the rotation transmission gear l9a opposite thereto, and the reciprocating member 43 slides in the left direction so as to rotate the other pivoting support 38b(the left one in Figure 3) clockwise, so that the low speed transmission small diameter gear 23b to have been supported by the pivoting support is engaged with the rotation transmission gear l9b opposite thereto. Subsequently, the supporting frames 13a, 13b of the left and right pinch roller 7a, 7b pivot in connection with the sliding of the reciprocating member 43, so that one pinch roller 7a is separated from the capstan 6a while the other pinch roller 7a forcibly abuts the other capstan 6b.The reciprocating member 43 initially slides by the pivoting force of the pivoting supports 38a, 38b, then due to the biasing force of the spring 47. One end of the spring 47 is fixed on the upper surface of the chassis 1, and the other end on a pivoting body 48 pivotably mounted on the upper surface of the chassis 1. Interlocking projection 49 of the pivoting body 48 is engaged with aperture 50 of the reciprocating member 43.
The tape running direction changing mechanism 51 comprises the pivoting supports 38a, 38b interlocking projections 39a, 39b, interlocking slots 44a, 44b, interlocking slots 45a, 45b, interlocking projections 46a, 46b, spring 47, pivoting body 48, interlocking projection 49 and aperture 50. The tape running direction changing mechanism 51 oppositely changes the direction of the rotation transmission path from the motor 9 to a pair of reel shafts 5a, 5b as well as changing the function of the pair of tape transfer mechanisms 4a, 4b from one side to the other side.
Apertures 52a, 52b of the rotation detecting members 18a, 18b, which receive the sleeves 17a, 17b, are elongated, and the central circular portions of twisting coil spring 53a, 53b are interposed between the detecting members 18a, 18b and the rotation transmission gears 19a, 19b fitted into the sleeves 17a, 17b. One limb of each of the twisting coil springs 53a, 53b isinterlocked with each of first interlocking projections 54a, 54b on the lower portion of the rotation detecting members 18a, 18b, while the other limb thereof is interlocked with each of second interlocking projections 55a, 55b on the lower portions of the rotation detecting members 18a, 18b. A limb of one twisting coil spring 53a is formed straight, while the corresponding limb of the other twisting coil spring 53b opposed thereto is bent. The end portions of the two limbs are limited in motion respectively by stoppers 56a, 56b. The pair of reverse lock mechanisms 57a, 57b comprise the twisting coil springs 53a, 53b and the stoppers 56a, 56b. The reverse lock mechanisms 57a, 57b respectively maintain the tape end detection means 41a, 41b in non-detecting position when the reels 5a, 5b serve to supply the tape.
In accordance with the stopping of recording or playback, the reciprocating mechanism 43 is maintained in the intermediate position retaining means 58, which comprises forked member 59 movably linked to the cover of the tape cassette loader (not shown). The two limbs 59a, 59b of the fork closely receive, even tightly pressed, the two projections 48a, 48b of the pivoting body 48, so that the pivoting body 48 is rotated in a given direction to a given angle, or orientation, thus maintaining the reciprocating member 43 in the intermediate position. In this way, when the reciprocating member 43 is maintained in the intermediate position, both of the low speed rotation transmission small diameter gears 23a, 23b, as shown in Figure 5, are engaged with the rotation transmission gears 19a, 19b in a position shallower than the pitch circles P1, P2, so that the rotation transmission path from the motor 9 to the pair of reel hubs Sa, 5b is established for moving in both directions. The reference numerals 60 and 61 represents respectively recording lever and stopping lever.
The operation of the auto-reverse tape recorder of the above construction will now be described. When recording or playing back is not performed (in the stop or eject mode), the reciprocating member 43, as shown in Figure 4, is maintained in the intermediate position by the intermediate position retaining means 58 and both the pinch rollers 7a, 7b are respectively separated slightly from the capstans 6a, 6b, while both the low speed rotation transmission small gears 23a, 23b are respectively engaged slightly with the rotation transmission gears 19a, 19b, as shown in Figure 5.Referring to Figure 4, the tape end detecting means 41a on the right side is maintained in nondetection position due to the inner end of the twisting coil spring 53a abutting the interlocking projection 56a, while the tape end detecting means 41b on the left side is maintained in the detection position due to the inner end of the twisting coil spring 53b not abutting the interlocking projection 56b.In this case, if the tape cassette 14 is loaded with the reel hubs thereof interlocked with the reel shafts 5a, 5b, and the playing back lever 60 or recording lever (not shown) is pushed, both the reel shafts 5a, 5b are rotated simultaneously in the opposite tape winding directions, i.e. the left reel 5a clockwise and the right reel 5b counterclockwise in Figure 1, before the recording or playback is started, thereby eliminating the loosening of the tape within the cassette 14.
Once the loosening of the tape within the cassette is eliminated, both the reel shafts 5a, 5b are stopped. Then, referring to
Figure 4, the left tape end detecting means 41b detects the end of the tape. Namely, the abutting portion 3Sb abuts the tight pressing portion 37b so as to pivot the supporting plate 38b counterclockwise in Figure 4. Accordingly, the auto-reverse mechanism 42 is operated and the reciprocating mechanism 43 moves in the right direction in Figure 4, so that the low speed rotation transmission small diameter gear 23a on the right side of Figure 3 is engaged with the rotation transmission gear l9a, while the left low speed rotation transmission small diameter gear 23b is separated from the rotation transmission gear 19b.
In this connection, the right pinch roller 7a in Figure 3 forcibly contacts the capstan 6a, while the left pinch roller 7b is separated from the capstan 6b. Consequently, the tape is transferred from the right reel shaft 5b to left reel shaft Sa in
Figure 1, so that the recording or playback is performed.
Subsequently, if the end of the tape is reached, the above step is reversed so as to change the tape running direction, so that the tape is transferred from the left reel shaft 5a to the right reel shaft Sb in Figure 1, thereby the recording or playing back being reversed.
In the above embodiment, although the intermediate position retaining means 58 comprises the member 59 movably linked with the cover of the tape cassette loader, which closely receives the two projections 48a, 48b of the pivoting body 48 so as to maintain the reciprocating member 43 in the intermediate position, it may be suggested for another embodiment as shown in
Figure 6 that the intermediate position retaining means 70 is established so that the two projections 48a, 48b of the pivoting body 48 simultaneously abut the means 70 when the case 71 is pulled out for the tape cassette loading, thus maintaining the pivoting body in the intermediate position. The reference numeral 72 is the stopper of the intermediate position retaining means 70. Alternatively, the same effect may be obtained by a member moving forward according to go, stop or eject operation to closely receive the two projections 48a, 48b of the pivoting body 48.
Thus even if a cassette tape with the tape loosened is loaded for recording or playback, the tape loosening is firstly eliminated before starting of the recording or playing back, so that the loosened tape portion does not jam around the pinch roller and the capstan, thereby protecting the tape and the recorder.
