Abstract
A kettle (1) is rotatably mounted on a surface by means of a post (6) on the surface which fits within a recess (16) in the base of the kettle. This is to prevent overturning when the kettle is accidentally pulled via the electric flex, e.g. by children. <IMAGE>
Description
ELECTRIC SAFETY KETTLE
The present invention relates to electric kettles, and particularly electric kettles for domestic use.
Existing electric kettles generally consist of a flat bottomed vessel containing an element close to the base.
Kettles of more modern construction are generally approximately cylindrical and of circular cross section, tall in relation to their diameter, with a handle and a spout for pouring water when boiled. An electric flex generally plugs detachably into a socket in the side of the kettle and close to the base.
Kettles of the type described above are, however, not very safe in a domestic environment. Household accidents occur very frequently when people, and particularly children, accidentally tip such kettles over by knocking them or catching the flex.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome this disadvantage by providing an electric kettle which cannot easily be accidentally tipped over.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an electric kettle whose flex detaches from the main kettle body when the flex is caught, before the kettle can be tipped over.
According to the present invention there is provided an electric safety kettle comprising means for rotatably mounting said kettle to a surface on which it rests.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the means for rotatably attaching the kettle to a surface on which it rests comprises a post of circular cross section rigidly attached to the surface, which fits inside a recess of corresponding shape in the underside of the kettle.
The advantage of the present invention is that it is very difficult to accidentally tip the kettle over. Thus, there is not danger to small children who catch the electric flex when, for example, then run past the kettle, since the kettle remains fixed to the surface on which it rests, and merely rotates when jolted. When the kettle rotates to the point where the force is in a direct line with the plug, the plug will be detached from the body of the kettle. Thus, no further force will be exerted on the kettle. However, during normal operation, the kettle can simply be lifted off the post to fill it or pour the boiled water.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will be described in detail below, by example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the electric safety kettle according to an embodiment of the present invention, and
Figure 2 is a plan view of the embodiment of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings, and particularly to
Figure 1, the electric safety kettle generally comprises a vessel 1 for containing water to be boiled, an electrical resistance heating element 2 located within the vessel 1, a handle 3 for manipulating the kettle, a spout 4 for pouring water when boiled, a detachable means 5 for connecting the element 2 to an electrical supply, and a means 6 for rotatably attaching the kettle to a surface on which it rests, which is generally a domestic kitchen worktop.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the means for rotatably attaching the kettle to the worktop comprises a post 6, which is in this case frustro-conical, but may also be cylindrical or conical or any other suitable shape. The post 6 fits inside a recess 16 of corresponding shape in the base of the kettle. The post 6 is preferably attached to the worktop by means of screws 7, but any suitable method may be used, for example, glueing, and the kettle rests on the clearance disk 8 on the post 6. The clearance disk 8 ensures that the kettle can rotate on the post 6 substantially freely of friction.
The element 2 is circular and surrounds the lower portion of recess 16. The element 2 is connected to an electrical mains supply by means of electrical flex 5 via detachable two-pin push-plug 9 and socket in the kettle body.
The kettle is preferably fitted with a tightfitting lid (not shown) which has attached to it means for preventing water from escaping from the kettle while the lid is on. Such lids are well-known, and the means for preventing water being uncontrollably poured or sprayed from the kettle generally comprises an attachment integral with the lid that forms a horizontal obstruction to spout 4 when the lid is fitted onto the kettle.
The operation of the electric safety kettle will now be described. In use the kettle rests on post 6. The kettle can now rotate freely on post 6, but cannot be accidentally displaced translationally, i.e. it cannot accidentally be dragged towards the edge of the worktop, and cannot be accidentally knocked over. However it can easily be lifted off the post for filling or pouring.
If the electrical flex 5 is now sharply pulled by, for example, being grabbed by a small child, instead of being dragged towards the edge of the worktop, the kettle rotates on post 6. If further tension is applied to flex 5, then two-pin plug 9 becomes detached from its socket on the kettle body. If the kettle is equipped with a lid and a means for preventing water escaping from the kettle, then as the kettle rotates on post 6, water is not sprayed out of the spout 4.
Thus, with the kettle according to the present invention it is very much more difficult for boiling water to be accidentally spilled than with known existing electric kettles.
Claims (4)
