Description
PANEL BUILT BODIES
The present invention relates to a method of constructing a body from panels and to an arrangement for joining the panels. More particularly, but not exclusively, it relates to a body for a vehicle or temporary building built by the method using the joining arrangement.
The invention will be described with reference to a load carrying vehicle body, but as stated above, it can be applied to other structures. It is known to construct vehicle bodies with each side being a large panel of laminated material, the interior being possibly of an insulating nature and the interior and exterior surfaces being of glassfibre reinforced plastics material, aluminium or steel. Obviously, such entire sides are most unwieldy to handle. An alternative is to provide a framework of e.g. wood and attach smaller panels thereto until the complete vehicle side is built up. This has a disadvantage in that the framework is heavy and thus the load which can be carried by the vehicle must be reduced accordingly. It is also a comparatively slow way to build bodies.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of constructing bodies which obviates the above disadvantages by allowing panels to be joined together quickly to fabricate an entire vehicle side or the face of a building.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a joining arrangement for elongate panels comprising: one or more female joint members, the or each said member being attached to and extending along a longitudinal edge of a first panel and being profiled along its length to have at least one ratchet shoulder having a face transverse to the plane of the panel and an angled face directed outwardly to the first panel; a male joint means attached or attachable to an edge of an intended adjacent second panel and comprising a male joint member profiled along its length to have at least one ratchet serration having a face transverse to the plane of the panel and an angled face directed inwardly with respect to the first panel, said at least one ratchet serration of said male joint member being interengageable with a corresponding ratchet shoulder of a female joint member to enable adjacent panels to be locked together.
Preferably the joining arrangement comprises two female joint members each integral with and extending along a respective longitudinal edge of an intended adjacent pair of panels; and a male joint means having two male joint members each adapted to cooperate with a respective one of said two female joint members.
Furthermore it is preferred that each of said female joint members of the above embodiment is profiled along its length to have a first comparatively large ratchet shoulder adajcent an outward edge of the member, and to have a plurality of comparatively smaller ratchet shoulders inward of said first shoulder.
In an alternative embodiment to that described above the joining arrangement comprises a single female joint member integral with and extending along an edge of a first panel; and a male joint means having a single male joint member integral with and extending along an edge of a second panel intended to be adjacent said first panel.
The material of said members may be such that the ratchet serrations and/or the ratchet shoulders are resiliently deformable to allow one to pass the other and engage lockingly therewith.
Each joint member may comprise an extruded length of material, preferably plastics material such as polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon or other suitable plastics material.
Each joint member may be the same thickness as a core of the panel and be anchored fixedly within the skins of the panel.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of constructing a body from elongate panels using a joining arrangement as described above, and comprising the steps of force-fitting one said male joint member into two respective female joint members to form a panel assembly, and assembling at least two said panel assemblies together with door means, floor means and roof means to form a body.
Optionally, sealant may be provided at each panel joint.
One or more strips may be provided extending along said panel assembly, attached to each panel thereof, and serving as a load retention strip within the vehicle.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a cross-sectional view of a panel joint arrangement, in joined condition, and taken along the line I-I of Figure 3;
FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view of an alternative panel joint arrangement, in separated condition and taken along the line I-I of Figure 3; and
FIGURE 3 is a diagrammatic illustration of a vehicle body embodying the invention.
Referring now to the drawings, Figure 3 illustrates a vehicle body side comprising four elongate panels 1. The roof, floor and doors of the vehicle are conventional. Each panel 1 is preferably of the type having a GRP or metal skin on each face with a polyurethane or other insulating material core between the faces. The core may be as described in our copending patent application no. 8727405.
Referring now to Figure 1, which shows in more detail an edge portion of two panels, each of which comprises external skins 2 of glassfibre reinforced plastics material, aluminium, steel or any other suitable material or combination of materials and a core 3. Each panel is provided along at least its two opposite lonyitudinal edges with a female joining member 5. A body portion of each female joining member 5 is anchored within the skins 2 of the panel to be integral with the panel, and is partially enfolded at its outer end by the skins 2 such that the abutment of an edge of the panel with a corresponding edge of an adjacent panel creates a substantially watertight seal therebetween.
A male joint means 4 formed of a discrete longitudinally extending strip is provided with a pair of oppositely directed longitudinally extending protuberances (male joint members) 6, integral with each other, which have a series of ratchet serrations 7 extending along their lengths. These ratchet serrations 7 have an angled face directed outwardly facing the adjoining panel and a transverse locking face behind each. In the drawing, the male members each have seven small such ratchet serrations 7 and one large such serration 10 but more or less are possible.
The female members 5,5' are provided with longitudinally extending channels 8, the sides of which have a series of longitudinally extending ratchet shoulders 9. The material of the male and female members 6,6' and 5,5' is such that each male member of the joint means 4 is a force-fit within the respective female member by resilient deformation of the ratchet serrations and/or the ratchet shoulders. The dimensions of the serrations 7 and shoulders 9 correspond as do the angles of the angled faces and transverse faces. The large serration 10 of each male joint member 6,6' is the most distant serration from the outer edge of each said member 6,6' and coacts with a corresponding large shoulder 11 provided outermost on the respective female member 5,5'.The interlocking of serration 10 and shoulder 11 has been found, in practice, to serve the single most significant role in positive retention of the male joint members in engagement with the female joint members.
Passage of each male joint member 6,6' into the respective female joint member 5,5' is facilitated by the triangular form of the outer edge of each male joint member 6,6'. The extent of travel of the male member into the female member is limited by the abutment of a ledge 20 on each male member against a corresponding shoulder formed on the wall of the cavity 8 of the female member.
Both the male joint means 4 and female joint members 6,6' are extrusions of plastics material and can be cut to a length to suit the panel with which they are used.
Once the members are assembled, the panels should remain attached and an internal load retention strip may be attached extending along the vehicle body, which may serve to make the panel assembly more rigid. Assembly of the panels into a unit which may form an entire side of the vehicle can thus be accomplished extremely quickly thus minimising the time needed to construct a vehicle body. If required, a sealant may be incorporated, optionally by insertion into the channel 8 before assembly. The joining members 4 and 5 are of plastics material, for example polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon or other suitable material and are therefore light in weight.
Additional joining members may be provided along top and/or bottom edges of the panels to allow the sides to be clip fitted to the floor and/or roof of the vehicle.
Each of the female members 5,5' is provided with a longitudinally extending recess 21 on each side to accommodate adhesive used to attach the female members 5,5' within the external skins 2.
Referring now to Figure 2, which shows in detail an edge portion of two panels according to a second embodiment of the present invention, each of which comprises external skins 12 and a core 3. Each panel is provided along at least its two opposite longitudinal edges with a male joining member 14 along one edge and a female joining member 15 along the other edge. A body portion of each joining member is anchored within the skins 12 of the panel to be integral with the panel, but unlike the previous embodiment the skins 12 do not enfold the outer edges of the panels.
The male member 14 is provided with a longitudinally extending protuberance 16 which has a series of ratchet serrations 17 extending along its length. These ratchet serrations 17 have an angled face directed outwardly facing the adjoining panel and a transverse locking face behind each.
The female member 15 is provided with a longitudinally extending channel 18, the edges of which have a series of longitudinally extending ratchet shoulders 19. The material of the male and female members 14 and 15 is such that the male member is a force-fit within the female member by resilient deformation of the ratchet serrations and/or the ratchet shoulders. The dimensions of the serrations 17 and shoulders 19 correspond as do the angles of the angled faces and transverse faces.
