Abstract

The device comprises a squat cylindrical housing (1) which includes a base (2) and a cover (3). The base has a central aperture to receive an existing ceiling rose, or the base of one, and may be screw-threaded to engage the base of the ceiling rose. Screw fixing holes are also provided. The cover has smoke inlet apertures (18) in its top wall (15) and outlet apertures in its side wall (16), and includes a central aperture (23) for an electrical cable (25) for feeding a pendant light fitting which is suspended some distance below the housing (1).

Description

SMOKE DETECTOR Existing smoke detectors are available for attachment to a cei.ling, but it is a common complaint that they look out of place and do not fit in with the surrounding decor.
The smoke detector of the present invention is potentially far less noti.ceable in a domestic environment.
The invention provides a smoke detector comprising a housing adapted for attachment to a ceiling, the housi.ng including inlet means for electrical supply wiring and outlet means for an electrical cable for supplying electricity to a li.ght fitting.
In one embodiment the detector may include a squat cylindrical two part housing comprising a circular baseplate for attachment to the ceiling and a cover whi.ch screws onto the baseplate. The baseplate has an aperture for electrical supply wiring and spaced fixing holes by which it may be screwed to the ceiling. A terminal block may be carried by the baseplate for conveni.ence in making the vari.ous electrical supply connections. The smoke detector circuit may be mounted directly on the baseplate or on a separate board whi.ch is itself mounted from the baseplate. The detector circuit may be powered from the incoming mains supply vi.a an i.nbuilt ac/dc adaptor, or it may be powered by separate batteries contained within the housing. The cover contains a series of circumferentially spaced apertures around its cylindrical si.de wall to allow smoke in, and there is a central aperture in the cover through which an electrical supply cable can pass from the terminal block to a light fitting.
This detector could be used in place of a ceiling rose.
In another embodiment the detector may include a housing which is adapted to fit over an existing ceiling rose, or at least the base portion of one. The housing could be threaded to mate with a thread on the rose or it could have separate screw holes for independent fixing to the ceiling. The housing agai.n has the necessary electrical inlets and outlets, but in this case the inlet connections are made to the ceiling rose. The detector circuit may agai.n be powered from the mains or batteries, and the housi.ng agai.n includes smoke inlet apertures.
In both embodiments the detector may include means for attachment to the light fitting, e.g. an internally or externally screw threaded boss, but in the case of a lightweight fitting it could simply be suspended by the electrical cable.
In each case the device is both useful and decorative even when it is not functioning as a smoke detector.
