Abstract
A dosing device comprises a container provided with a filler aperture 9, and a closure member adapted to engage the filler aperture. The closure member includes a closed reservoir 6 and there are provided means for opening the reservoir upon engagement of the closure member with the filler aperture such that material contained within the reservoir is released into the container. The means for opening the reservoir may include means eg a cylindrical blade of tapering cross section for piercing the base of the reservoir or means 7, 7a, 10, 10a for causing twisting of the reservoir such that it ruptures along a line of weakness, (12 Figure 2). The container is typically a spray bottle, eg containing pesticide, fitted with a hand pump, (3, Figure 1). The closure member engages the container by screw engagement, press fit or bayonet type engagement. <IMAGE>
Description
Dosing Device
This invention relates to a dosing device, in particular to a dosing and spraying device useful in the field of plant protection.
The spraying of aqueous solutions is one of the commonest means of application of pesticides etc. Spraying devices generally include a container holding the spray-mixture and a pump of some kind to expel the mixture through a nozzle. Usually the spray-mixture is made up immediately prior to use; the user measures out a given volume of concentrate and dilutes this with water. An important disadvantage of this procedure is that the user's hands can easily come into contact with the concentrate which may be caustic and/or toxic. Furthermore, errors can easily be made which result in spray-mixtures of too high or too low a concentration. This may be wasteful, damaging to the plants or ineffective. Errors are particularly likely where, as is very often the case, only very small amounts of active ingredient are required, the accurate measurement of which is very difficult.Other problems include the safe storage of opened packs or bottles of the various concentrates which, as mentioned above, are frequently toxic or caustic.
The above-mentioned problems are particularly acute for the non-professional user, eg the home gardener, who requires only small quantities of a large variety of concentrates.
We have now devised a dosing device which overcomes or substantially mitigates the above problems.
According to the invention there is provided a dosing device comprising a container provided with a filler aperture, and a closure member adapted to engage the filler aperture, characterised in that the closure member includes a closed reservoir and there are provided means for opening the reservoir upon engagement of the closure member with the filler aperture such that material contained within the reservoir is released into the container.
The dosing device according to the invention is advantageous in that it facilitates the safe and accurate preparation of solutions for spraying. It also obviates many of the problems associated with the storage of concentrates of pesticides etc.
The closure member may be engageable with the filler aperture by any convenient means, eg by a press fit or a bayonet-type connection, but the engagement is preferably a screw engagement.
The reservoir may have any convenient shape but is preferably generally cylindrical.
The container is, especially when the dosing device is to be used for horticultural applications, most preferably a spray bottle provided, in addition to the filler aperture, with an outlet aperture fitted with a spray-head of conventional design, eg a hand pump.
The means for opening the reservoir may involve piercing of the reservoir, generally by piercing the base of the reservoir. It is preferable that the base of the reservoir not be completely severed by the piercing action so that fragments of the reservoir do not enter the container.
Thus, according to a preferred aspect of the invention, there is provided a dosing device comprising a container provided with a filler aperture adapted to receive a closure member including a reservoir containing material to be dispersed in liquid contained within the container, the closure member being provided with piercing means which, upon engagement of the closure member with the container, pierce the base of the reservoir so releasing the material contained within the reservoir into the container without completely severing the- base of the reservoir.
For example, the reservoir may be a cylindrical cup provided with a flange at which the reservoir is capable of being supported b the filler aperture and the piercing means to comprise a cylindrical blade of tapered cross-section fitting closely inside the reservoir such that upon screw engagement of the closure member with the filler aperture the reservoir is supported at the flange by the rim of the aperture and the tip of the tapered blade impinges upon and then pierces the base of the reservoir, the closure member and filler aperture being so constructed that, between the position at which it first pierces the base of the reservoir and the position of complete engagement of closure member and filler aperture, the tip of the blade describes an arc of less than 360". We prefer the arc to be from 270 to 350 , especially from 300 to 320 .
Alternatively, the means for opening the reservoir may involve twisting the reservoir such that it ruptures along a line of weakness.
Thus, according to another preferred embodiment of the invention, there is provided a dosing device comprising a container provided with a filler aperture and a closure member adapted to engage the filler aperture, the closure member including a closed reservoir and there being provided means of bringing about, upon engagement of the closure member with the filler aperture, twisting of the reservoir such that the reservoir ruptures along a line of weakness so as to release material within the reservoir into the container.
The line of weakness is preferably a groove in the wall of the reservoir.
There are preferably provided from 2 to 12, more preferably 6 to 10, eg 8, grooves in the wall of the reservoir.
The means for bringing about twisting of the reservoir preferably comprise a lug within the filler aperture which engages a recess provided in the reservoir such that when the closure member is screwably engaged with the filler aperture rotation of the lower portion of the reservoir is restricted.
The line of weakness preferably extends from the upper to the lower portion of the reservoir. The line is preferably curved.
In a preferred embodiment of the device according to the invention there are provided two lugs at diametrically opposed positions within the filler aperture corresponding to two recesses in the reservoir. We particularly prefer the lugs to form part of an insert fitting closely in the filler aperture.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a closure member for use in association with a spray bottle having a filler aperture, characterised in that the closure member includes a reservoir containing material to be dispersed in the spray bottle.
A preferred embodiment of the dosing device according to the invention will now be described, by way of illustration only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a dosing and spraying device comprising a spray bottle with two necks, a closure member engaged with one of the necks and a hand-pump fitted to the other neck,
Figure 2 is a cut away view of the filler aperture and closure member prior to their mutual engagement,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the closure member, and
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of the filler aperture and closure member after tight mutual engagement thereof.
Referring first to Figure 1, a dosing and spraying device comprises a bottle (1) with two necks (2,4) one of which (4) acts as a filler aperture, a hand pump (3) fitted to the other neck (2), and a closure (5) engageable with the filler aperture (4).
As shown in Figure 2, the closure (5) includes a reservoir (6) in the form of a cylindrical cup. The reservoir (6) contains pesticide concentrate to be dispersed in liquid contained within the bottle (1). The base of the reservoir (6) is provided with a pair of diametrically opoosed recesses (7,7a). At its upper portion the reservoir (6) is provided with a screw thread (8). An insert (9) fits closely in the filler aperture (4). The insert (9) is provided with two lugs (lO,10a) adapted to engage the recesses (7,7a). The upper portion of the inner surface of the insert (9) is provided with a screw thread (11).
Referring now to Figure 3, the outer surface of the reservoir (6) is provided with several grooves (12) extending from the upper to the lower portion of the reservoir (6).
When it is desired to use the device, the user fills the bottle (1) with water and selects a closure (5) containing the particular concentrate required. The closure may be colour coded for ease of identification.
The closure (5) is then inserted into the filler aperture (4). The lugs (lO,lOa) engage the recesses (7,7a) in the reservoir (6). The closure (5) and the bottle (1) are then tightly screw engaged via the screw threads (8,11). Rotation of the lower portion of the reservoir (6) is restricted by the lugs (lO,lOa). This causes the reservoir (6) to rupture along the grooves (12) (see Figure 4) thus allowing the contents of the reservoir to fall into the bottle (1). Residual concentrate remaining in the reservoir may be washed out by gentle shaking of the device.
After dispersion or dissolution of the concentrate in the water contained within the bottle (1), the device is ready for use. The spray-mixture is dispensed from the device by operation of the hand pump (3).
When the bottle is empty, the closure (5) is unscrewed and discarded. The device may then be refilled with water and charged with the same or a different concentrate.
Claims (15)
1. A dosing device comprising a container provided with a filler aperture, and a closure member adapted to engage the filler aperture, characterised in that the closure member includes a closed reservoir and there are provided means for opening the reservoir upon engagement of the closure member with the filler aperture such that material contained within the reservoir is released into the container.
2. A dosing device according to Claim 1, wherein the closure member is engageable with the filler aperture by means of screw engagement.
3. A dosing device according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the container is a spray bottle provided, in addition to the filler aperture, with an outlet aperture fitted with a hand pump.
4. A dosing system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the means for opening the. reservoir includes piercing means for piercing the base of the reservoir.
5. A dosing device comprising a container provided with a filler aperture adapted to receive a closure member including a reservoir containing material to be dispersed in liquid contained within the container, the closure member being provided with piercing means which, upon engagement of the closure member with the container, pierce the base of the reservoir so releasing the material contained within the reservoir into the container without completely severing the base of the reservoir.

A dosing device according to Claim 5, wherein the reservoir is a cylindrical cup provided with a flange at which the reservoir is capable of being supported by the filler aperture and the piercing means comprises a cylindrical blade of tapered cross-section fitting closely inside the reservoir such that upon screw engagement of the closure member with the filler aperture the reservoir is supported at the flange by the rim of the aperture and the tip of the tapered blade impinges upon and then pierces the base of the reservoir, the closure member and filler aperture being so constructed that, between the position at which it first pierces the base of the reservoir and the position of complete engagement of closure member and filler aperture, the tip of the blade describes an arc of less than 360-.
7. A dosing device according to any one of Claims 1 to 3, wherein the means for opening the reservoir includes means for twisting the reservoir such that it ruptures along a line of weakness.
8. A dosing device according to Claim 7, wherein the line of weakness is a groove in the wall of the reservoir.
9. A dosing device according to Claim 7 or Claim 8, wherein the closure member is screwably engageable with the filler aperture and the means for bringing about twisting of the reservoir comprise a lug within the filler aperture which engages a recess provided in the reservoir such that rotation of the lower portion of the reservoir is restricted.
10. A dosing device according to Claim 9, wherein there are provided two lugs at diametrically opposed positions within the filler aperture corresponding to two recesses in the reservoir.
11. A dosing device according to Claim 10, wherein the two lugs part of an insert fitting closely in the filler aperture.
12. A closure member for use in association with a spray bottle having a filler aperture, characterised in that the closure member includes a reservoir containing material to be dispersed in the spray bottle.
13. A closure member according to Claim 12, wherein the wall of the reservoir is provided with a line of weakness.
14. A dosing device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
15. A closure member substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
