Abstract

A control arrangement for a cooking or heating appliance, especially in the form of a gas hob, comprises an electrically operated gas flow control valve for controlling gas flow to a burner of said appliance, INCREASE and DECREASE controls operable on the control valve for respectively increasing and decreasing the gas flow thereof only between a minimum gas flow state and a maximum gas flow state, and an OFF control for turning the control valve OFF. The description also relates to electric and microwave cookers and electric heaters having an electrically operated control device for controlling a heating unit, and the INCREASE,DECREASE and OFF controls.

Description

CONTROL ARRANEMENTS This invention relates to control arrangements and more particularly to control arrangements for use in cooking appliances and heating appliances. The invention is especially applicable to a control arrangement for use in gas cooking appliances which incorporate electrically operated gas flow control valves.
There is a move at the present time to provide gas cooking appliances e.g. gas hobs and gas cookers, with electrical gas flow control valves whereby they may be operated "electronically" using, for example, pushbutton or touch-button controls. The electrical gas flow control valves may take a variety of forms, one of which is disclosed in our co-pending U.K. patent application No. 8801039 which relates to a rotary type, gas flow control valve having a stepper motor driving the rotary control. The electrical gas flow control valve, of necessity, needs to be able to control the gas flow from an OFF position to a maximum flow position. This can be achieved by providing separate "increase" and "decrease" controls, by means of which the control valve may be turned ON and OFF, and adjusted to a required flow rate.
One requirement of such a gas flow control valve is that it must be able to be adjustable to a low flow rate which corresponds to a "simmer" position on a gas cooker. With conventional rotary-type gas valves, it is usual to incorporate a niting at the position corresponding to the "simmer" position, but this is not possible with electrically operated gas flow control valves, with the result that when the "decrease" control is operated to reduce the gas flow to a required simmer position, it is easy to go too far and inadvertently turn the valve OFF. This is obviously undesirable.
Although this problem is particularly troublesome in gas cookers, it can also apply to electric cookers, including, possibly, microwave cookers, and to gas and electric heating appliances.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a control arrangement which overcomes this problem.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a control arrangement for use in a cooking appliance or a heating appliance, said control arrangement comprising at least one electrically operated control device operable for controlling a heating unit of said appliance, control means operable on said control device for controlling said heating unit only between a minimum ON state and a maximum ON state, and means operable on said control device for turning said heating unit OFF.
In a preferred form of control arrangement for use in a gas cooking or heating appliance, the electrically operated control device will take the form of an electrically operated gas flow control valve for controlling gas flow to a burner of said appliance.
In one arrangement for carrying out the invention according to the preferred embodiment, preferably separate INCREASE and DECREASE controls will be provided operable on said control valve for respectively increasing and decreasing the gas flow thereof, and an OFF control will be provided operable on said control valve for turning said gas flow OFF.
In another arrangement for carrying out the invention according to the preferred embodiment, preferably separate INCREASE and DECREASE controls will be provided operable on said control valve for respectively increasing and decreasing the gas flow thereof, said control valve being turned OFF by a subsequent operation of said DECREASE control when said gas flow is at a minimum.
By arranging that the INCREASE and DECREASE controls are operable on the gas valve for causing the gas flow to be increased and decreased respectively, only between a minimum gas flow state, which could correspond to a "simmer" position, and a maximum gas flow state, the problem of inadvertently turning OFF the control valve is overcome. Turn OFF of the control valve is only achieved by operation of the separate OFF control, or by a subsequent operation of the DECREASE control after the DECREASE control has been used to reduce gas flow to its minimum.
Although particularly applicable to gas cookers, the principle of using a separate OFF control or a subsequent operation of the DECREASE control, could equally well be applicable to electric cookers and microwave cookers, and also to gas and electric heaters which incorporate "electronic" push-button or touchbutton controls.
