Abstract

A mirror assembly 10 has a box-like structure 11 supporting a mirror 12. The interior of the structure 11 contains an electrically-operated fan unit 14 comprising a rotary impeller and a heating element 148 which is arranged to cause flow of heated air through the structure 11 and exiting to flow over the surface of the mirror 12 to free the mirror from condensation. <IMAGE>

Description

AIR HEATED MIRROR This invention relates to a mirror assembly.
According to the present invention there is provided a mirror assembly in which a box-like structure supports a mirror and contains an electrically-operated fan unit arranged to cause flow of heated air through the structure and over the surface of the mirror to free the surface from condensation.
Preferably the fan unit has separate impeller and heating components.
Preferably the box-like structure has an air inlet passageway at its upper end and an air outlet passageway at its lower end, said lower end being shaped to guide out flowing heated air in an upwardly directed stream over the surface of the mirror.
Preferably a horizontally-projecting mesh-like platform is provided at the lowermost edge of the mirror to close off the air outlet passageway in an air permeable manner.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a front view of a mirror assembly in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view (to a different scale) taken on the line A-A in Fig. 1.
The mirror assembly 10 shown in the drawing comprises a box-like structure 11 made of heat resistant moulded plastics material having a rear surface lIA adapted to be secured to a wall (not shown) for example by headed screws secured to the wall and entering keyhole slots in surface llA. The front surface llB of the structure 11 has a mirror 12 secured thereto for example by means of adhesive. The side surfaces 11C, 11D of the structure are essentially planar and the upper surface llE is apertured as at 13 to provide an air inlet passageway to the interior of the structure 11 which contains an electrically-operated fan unit 14 comprising a rotary impellor 14A and a heating element 14B.
The bottom end of the structure 11 defines an air outlet passageway 15 shaped to guide outflowing heated air with minimal turbulence in an upwardly directed stream denoted by arrows B over the surface of the mirror 12 to free the mirror surface from condensation. A horizontally-projecting mesh-like platform 16 is provided at the lowermost edge of the mirror 12 to close off the air outlet passageway 15 in an air permeable manner so that bathroom accessories do not fall into the passageway 15.
In operation the fan unit 14 is actuated by an electrical ON/OFF switch 17 fitted to one of the side surfaces llC, llD, being either mains or battery operated, resulting in an inflow of air through the air inlet passageway which is heated by element 14B and which emerges from outlet passageway 15 to flow over the exposed surface of the mirror 12. If the assembly 10 is located in a moist atmosphere so as to be likely to be covered in condensation, the flow of heated air over the mirror 12 removes or prevents condensation so that the mirror 12 is available for use in a normal manner.
The fan unit 14 is conveniently provided with a safety-cut-out to prevent overheating of the interior of the structure 11.

Claims (5)

1. A mirror assembly in which a box-like structure supports a mirror and contains an electrically-operated fan unit arranged to cause flow of heated air through the structure and over the surface of the mirror to free the surface from condensation.
2. A mirror assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the fan unit has separate impeller and heating components.
3. A mirror assembly as claimed in either preceding claim, wherein the box-like structure has an air inlet passageway at its upper end and an air outlet passageway at its lower end, said lower end being shaped to guide outflow heated air in an upwardly directed stream over the surface of the mirror.
4. A mirror assembly as claimed claim 3, wherein a horizontally-projecting mesh-like platform is provided at the lowermost edge of the mirror to close off the air outlet passageway in an air permeable manner.
5. A mirror assembly as claimed in claim 1 and substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
