Abstract
A winch, e.g., a yacht sheet winch, has an effective diameter that can vary in relation to the tension in the cable passing round the drum. The drum is constructed with pivoting plates (8) controlled by pins (9) engaged with a cam (3). The plates are returned to a larger effective diameter position by springs (7) when the cable tension reduces. <IMAGE>
Description
VARIABLE DIAMETER WINCH DRIVE
This invention relates to a variable diameter winch drive.
A winch is a well known device that by means of mechanical advantage enables cable to be translated and tensioned.
Existing winches derive their mechanical advantage from the length of the operating lever in relation to the diameter of the drum and a system of gearing generally within the drum. Some winches contain complex gearing that enables the ratio to b changed whilst in operation.
According to the present invention there is provided a variable diameter drum such that as the tension in the cable increases, the diameter reduces giving an in@reased mechanical advantage. This can be combined with conventiona gearing mechanism to increase the total range of mechanical advantage.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be descr@bad by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure @ shows a plan of the winch with the drum at @ts largest effective
diameter.
Figure 2 shows an elevation with the drum at @ts largest effective diareter.
Figure @ shows a plan @@ @@e winch the drum at @t@ sh@@est effective
diameter.
Figure 4 shows an elevation with the drum in its sr@alle@@ effective diameter.
Referring to the drawings the winch comprises a handle attachment 1 which is on the end of shaft 2. The cam 3 can be attached to shaft 2 or a concentric shaft 5 driven through gearing in the base 4.
As the tension in cable 6 increases, pins 9 which bear on cam 3 constrain the cam because of its profile to rotate against the force provided by the springs 7. The effective diameter round which the cable passes is reduced by the plates 8 pivoting inwards about pivots 10.
With reduce3 tension in cable 6, the springs 7 will returr. plates E to larger effective diameter.
Claims (4)
1. A winch whose effective diameter comprises a number of pivoted plates such that the diameter is variable.
2. A winch as in Claim 1 wherein a means exist to control the effective diameter.
3. A winch as in Claim 1 and Claim 2 that can be driven through a direct means.
4. A winch as in Claim 1 and Claim 2 that can be driven through a ratio changing mechanism.
