Abstract

An elongate frame cladding element (16, 18) of channel section for cladding a frame of a window, door or the like has a base portion and side portion extending away from the base portion, the side portion including engagement means (26, 28) extending inwardly of the channel section at or adjacent edges thereof remote from the base portion, and the cladding element (16, 18) having sufficient resilience to permit engagement, in use, of the engagement means with locating surfaces on the frame with a snap fit. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CLADDING This invention relates to cladding for window frames for windows, doors and the like, including fire resistant windows and doors.
In the past frames have often been made from wood.
However, frames are often made from steel, and steel window frames often require painting to blend in with their surroundings.
At present, most paints do not adhere well to steel and, accordingly, cladding is fixed to the window frame to provide a suitable surface for the paint. Until now, with simple steel profiles, the cladding has always been attached to the window frame by means of screws or rivets and has therefore been time consuming and expensive to install; this arrangement also creates a potential weathering problem since the cladding is pierced by the screws.
According to the invention there is provided an elongate frame cladding element of channel section for cladding a frame of a window, door or the like, in use, which element has a base portion and side portions extending away from the base portion, the side portions including engagement means extending inwardly of the channel section at or adjacent edges thereof remote from the base portions, and the cladding element having sufficient resilience to permit engagement, in use, of the engagement means with locating surfaces on the frame with a snap fit.
Each engagement means may comprise an inwardly extending lip.
The locating surfaces may be surfaces for engaging and locating an infill in the frame, but one or more of the lips may engage a locating surface on a clip mounted on the frame.
The cladding element may have one or more inwardly extending spacers for separating the cladding element from a frame, in use.
The cladding element preferably clads the frame, in use, completely on a particular side of an infill, extending from sealing means for the infill to material surrounding the frame or to sealing means for a second infill located by the frame. It is preferable that the material of the cladding element readily accepts paint.
The cladding may be made from aluminium.
Two specific embodiments of the present invention are now described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1, is a cross sectional view of a mullion/transom of a window frame; and Figure 2, is a cross sectional view of a window frame.
With reference to Figure 1 a mullion 2 of a window frame comprises a steel core 4, two securement bars 6 two flanges 7, a number of resilient strips 8,9,10,11 and non me-llic seals 12,14. The steel core is covered with cladding elements 16,18. It will be appreciated that the frame may be of a door or other opening.
Glass window panes (or, indeed, infills of other sheet material) 20, 22 are located in the mullion in known manner.
The cladding elements 16, 18 are each of aluminium conveniently extruded, or of some other suitable material. The cladding elements 16 are both of channel section, the element 18 being shallower than the element 16. Each cladding element 16, 18 has a pair of lips 26, 28 respectively engaging the bars 6 and the core 4 in the region of the seals to clad completely the structural steel. Spacer ribs 29 are, integral with the cladding elements 16, 18 and which separate the steel core 4 from the cladding elements 16, 18. The cladding elements 16, 18 are clipped onto the bars 6 and steel core 4 with a snap fit the material of the cladding elements having sufficient resilience to allow this action.
The cladding elements 16, 18 are manufactured in long lengths and are either cut to size on site or factory cut to fit particular frame sizes.
A second embodiment of the present invention is shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
In this embodiment cladding elements 38a, 38b are shown applied to a window frame set in a wall. The window frame itself has a steel core 30 with one flange 31 and a securement bar 33. At the side of the core 30 remote from glass pane 32, locating surfaces 34, 36 are required to enable the cladding elements 38a, 38b to be mounted on the window frame.
The surfaces 34, 36 are formed adjacent edges of an anchor strip 40. The strip 40 is secured by bolts or rivets 42 to the underside of the steel core 30. The strip 40 may be continuous, but may be substitsued by a series of clips secured bo the core 30.
The cladding elements 38a, 38b are designed to fit the window frame. In this embodiment, the cladding element 38a has a channel cross section which is symmetrical, whereas the cladding 38b has a channel cross section which is not symmetrical. Each cladding element 38a, 38b is mounted on the steel core 30 by engagement of respective lips 44 with an exposed corner of the steel core 30, or the bar 33 respectively. The cladding elements 38a, 38b are then positioned around the steel core 30 so that lips 46 clip behind the surfaces 34, 36 of the strip 40.
Spacer ribs 48 are provided on the cladding elements 38a, 38b.
The installation of cladding elements according to these embodiments of the present invention is quicker and easier than the application of previously known types of cladding The spacer ribs enable the cladding elements to be correctly positioned. The main advantage, however, is that a paintable cladding is provided which has complete coverage of the frame, without any penetration of its surface, and which can be used with standard steel frame profiles.
It will of course be understood that the present invention has been described above purely by way of example and that modifications of detail can be made within the scope of the invention.

Claims (9)

1. An elongate frame cladding element of channel section for cladding a frame of a window, door or the like, in use, which element has a base portion and side portions extending away from the base portion, the side portions including engagement means extending inwardly of the channel section at or adjacent edges thereof remote from the base portion, and the cladding element having sufficient resilience to permit engagement, in use, of the engagement means with locating surfaces on the frame with a snap fit.
2. A cladding element as claimed in claim 1 wherein each engagement means comprises an inwardly extending lip.
3. A cladding element as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein, in use, an engagement means locates and engages an infill in the frame.
4. A cladding element as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3 wherein, in use, an engagement means engages a locating surface on a clip mounted on the frame.
5. A cladding element as claimed in any preceding claim which includes one or more inwardly extending spacers for separating the cladding element from a frame, in use.
6.A cladding element as claimed in any preceding claim which clads the frame, in use, completely on a particular side of an infill, extending from sealing means for the infill to material surrounding the frame or to sealing means for a second infill located by the frame.
7. A cladding element as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the material of the cladding element readily accepts paint.
8. A cladding element as claimed in claim 7 wherein the cladding is made from aluminium.
9. A cladding element substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to or as shown in the accompanying drawings.
