Abstract
A fastening system for a window or door is fitted within a hollow interior of an extruded frame member of the window or door, and comprises two bolt elements 28, 30 which are displaceable in opposite directions out of the ends of the extruded member upon operating the mechanism. A slide plate may be provided for displacement from outside the extruded member, to turn a disc 32 to which the bolt elements are coupled by links 34, 36. The bolt elements and a mount 40 to which the disc is journalled are assembled together then slid along a channel provided within the extruded member, whereafter the mount 40 is fixed in position within the channel and the bolt elements are displaceable within the channel. <IMAGE>
Description
WINDOW OR DOOR SECURITY ARRANGEMENT
This invention relates to a security arrangement for a window or door, particularly for a window or door formed of extruded aluminium of plastics members as in the case of double-glazed windows or doors.
Various types of locking or security mechanisms have been proposed for double-glazed windows and doors which are formed of lengths of extruded aluminium or plastics (typically PVC). We have now devised an improved security arrangement.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided a security mechanism for a window or door formed of extruded members, the mechanism being arranged for fitting within the hollow interior of an extruded member and comprising two bolt elements which are displaceable in opposite directions out of the ends of the extruded member upon operating the mechanism.
Preferably the extruded member is formed with a longitudinal channel for receiving the slidable bolts. This channel may also locate a mounting for a rotatable disc, which is coupled to the bolts by way of links so that when the disc is turned in one direction or the other, the bolts are extended out of the opposite ends of the extruded member or are retracted, respectively. A manually-operable actuating member mounted to an outer surface of the extruded member may comprise a linearly slidable member serving to rotate the disc, or a pivoted handle serving upon turning to rotate the disc.
In a preferred embodiment, the arrangement of bolts, links, disc and mount for the disc may be assembled in a jig and then inserted into one end of the extruded member, with the bolts and mount for the disc engaged with the longitudinal channel of the extruded member, and slid along this channel until the mount reaches the appropriate position. The mount can be secured in this position from the outside of the extruded member.
Preferably either or both bolts are coupled to displaceable cam members arranged to co-operate with keep elements provided on the window or door frame. Preferably the cam members are eccentrically mounted and rotate as the bolts linearly displace, in order to bear on the keep elements and urge the window or door into sealing engagement against the frame.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a section through the vertical stile of a window, showing the adjacent vertical member of the window frame and components of a security mechanism;
FIGURE 2 is a diagrammatic plan view of the security mechanism with its components positioned as installed with the stile of the window;
FIGURE 3 is a plan view of a slide plate of the actuating arrangement of the security mechanism; and
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of a turn plate driven by a closure handle of the window.
Referring to Figure 1, a window is formed from four lengths of aluminium extrusion 10, running along the four edges of the window and mitred together at the corners in accordance with usual practice. The extrusion 10 has a generally rectangular hollow interior as shown, with one side lOa provided with flanges to form a channel 12 for receiving a double-glazed unit (not shown). The other side lOb is provided with a flange 14, formed at 14a to receive a sealing strip, and arranged to close and seal against the outer surface of the window frame, the vertical member of which is shown at 16.
The extrusion is formed on the inner surface of side lOb with a longitudinal channel 18 of circular section, partly open along its inner edge. The extrusion is further formed on this surface with two further longitudinal channels 20, 22 of circular but smaller section and also partly open along their inner edges. Into the channels 20, 22, plastics extrusions 24, 26 are slid, each having a circular section 2a, 26a for fitting within the channels 20, 22 and with a flat top portion 24b, 26b the purpose of which will be described below.
As shown in Figure 2, two bolts 28, 30 are received within the channel 18 to project from the opposite ends of the length of extrusion 10 when the security mechanism is actuated. The two bolts have their inner ends coupled to a rotatable disc 32 by links 34, 36, so that if the disc is rotated in one direction the bolts will be extended to engage in bolt holes formed in the window frame at the top and bottom of the window, and if rotated in the opposite direction the bolts will be retracted to no longer project from the top and bottom of the window. The disc is provided with an integral axle 38 which fits into a transverse bore in a rod-shaped mount 40 which is received in the longitudinal channel 18 of the extrusion and secured in place by screws inserted through holes drilled through the side lOb of the extrusion.The links 34, 36 rest against the flat top surfaces of the plastics extrusions 24, 26 to maintain their orientations, as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 further shows an actuating arrangement for the security mechanism. A bifurcated slide plate 44 (see also Figure 3) extends through a slot cut in the inner end lOc of the extrusion and one of the pins 35 (coupling the links to the disc 32) is positioned between the two legs of this slide plate. In its portion projecting out of the extrusion 10, the plate 44 is formed with a row of four apertures 145. A handle 46 (extending parallel to the extrusion 10 and thus into the paper on which Figure 1 is drawn) is fixed to a pivot pin 47 journalled in a mount 48 secured to the inner side of the extrusion 10.The pin 47 has a square section portion which fits into a square aperture in a turn plate 49 (see Figure 4) provided with four projecting teeth 50 around part of its circumference.
The teeth 50 of turn plate 49 engage within the apertures of slide plate 1414. Thus, as the handle is turned in one direction or the other, the turn plate 49 acts on the slide plate 44 to displace it in one direction or the other lengthwise of the extrusion 10, for extending or retracting the bolts 28, 30.
Each bolt 28, 30 has a pin engaged into a transverse bore formed in that bolt, and extending though a longitudinal slot cut in the side lOb of the extrusion. This pin projects from a slide plate 52 disposed against the outer surface of side lOb and retained in position by a cover plate 54 which is screwed to this outer surface of the extrusion. An eccentric pin 56 projects outwardly from the slide plate 52 through a longitudinal slot in the cover plate 54 and mounts a cam or roller 58 eccentrically. This cam is arranged to co-operate with a keep element 60 projecting from the face of the window frame. Thus, as the bolt slides home, it displaces the slide plate 52 to slide the Din 56 behind the keep. Also the cam or roller s8 is caused to
by frgntirn ar Qtfrog 4 kneP, turnland press against the keep 60 to urge the window more firmly closed, compressing the sealing strips between the window stiles and the frame itself.
The security mechanism may be fitted in a straightforward manner, by assembling the disc 32, bolts 28, 30, links 34, 36 and the mount 40 for the disc and sliding the bolts and mount along the channel 18 from one end of the extrusion. Screws can be fitted through holes drilled at appropriate positions through side lOb of the extrusion and into tapped holes in the mount to secure this in position. The slide plate is then inserted through a slot cut in the appropriate position through the end lOc of the extrusion, and the handle mounted to the extrusion for its turn plate to engage the slide plate. Also the slide plates 52 may be positioned against the side lOb of the extrusion with their pins engaging within the respective transverse holes formed in the bolts via slots cut in the side 10 of the extrusion, and the cover plates 54 are screwed to this side of the extrusion.
The security mechanism is thus straightforward to assembly and install when making the window or door and provides for a high degree of security deriving from the fact that the stile into which the mechanism is fitted provides two bolts for locking into opposite sides (or top and bottom) of the frame at the opposite ends of that stile.
