Abstract

A check valve device 4 is located within the bore hole of a rotating member 2 of a rotary valve. Means such as seals 5 are provided for restricting fluid flow passage to the bore hole of the rotating member. The operation of the valve is by means of stem 6 which rotates the rotating member. This rotation allows the function of the check valve device to be reversed without disconnection of the pipeline. <IMAGE>

Description

VALVE This invention relates to fluid flow control valves.
Check valves are well known mechanical devices which permit the flow of a fluid in one direction only and are closed when there is no flow. These types of valves are normally located in pipelines to restrict the flow of fluid through the pipeline to one direction.
To alter the direction of flow in said pipeline and maintain the check valve function necessitates the removal, reversal and reinsertion of the valve within the pipeline according to the present invention there is provided a check valve device located within the bore hole of the rotary member1 means of restricting the fluid flow passage to the bore of the rotary member.
R specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a vertical cross section of the valve with the bore hole connecting the valve apertures.
Figure 2 shows a horizontal cross section of the valve with the bore hole connecting the valve apertures.
Figures 3 to 9 show horizontal cross sections, to illustrate the sequence of operation of the valve, and how the seals combine to restrict fluid flow to the bore hole of the rotating member.
With reference to the drawings, the valve comprises a hollow body 1 with apertures, a spherical rotary member 2 located within the body,a bore hole through rotary member for the passage of fluids. Check valve device 4 located within the bore hole to limit direction of fluid flow. Seals 5 positioned between body 1 and spherical rotary member 2 to restrict fluid flow to the bore hole of the rotary member.
Stem / rod or similar devive 6 to provide means of externally rotating the spherical rotary member. The permitted direction of fluid flow allowed by check valve device is indicated by arrow 7.
The valve operates as follows:- Figure 3 shows the valve permitting fluid flow from right to left only. To reverse the function of the check valve device requires the application of a turning force to the stem 6.
Tha consequences of an anti-clockwise force is illustrated in figures 4 to 9.
Figure 4 shows how the rotation of the spherical rotary member 2 breaches outer seals. Fluid flow through check valve device only still possible from right to left.
Figure 5 shows all seals intact, no fluid flow in either direction possible.
Figure 6 shows inner seal or seals breached, outer seals intact therefore no fluid flow possible.
Figure 7 shows all seals intact, no fluid flow in either direction possible Figure 8 shows outer seals permitting fluid flow through check valve device only from left to right.
Figure 9 shows all seals intact and permitting fluid flow through check valve device only from left to right.
To return to the original check valve function reverse sequence or continue the anti-clockwise rotation until original position is reached.
