Description

SEPARATOR FOR GARDEN COMPOST CONTAINERS This invention relates to garden compost containers.
Garden and kitchen waste may be put into garden compost containers. This material is then rotted down by the action of organisms in the soil as well as heat and bacteria, to form a soil enriching compost.
As the material in the garden compost container rots down, its volume decreases, leaving a space above the composting material. The purpose of this invention is to make use of this space by incorparating a separator.
This separator is lowered as the volume of the composting material decreases. Fresh composting material is placed on top of the separator as space becomes available, thus making use of the space created by the composting action of the material below the separator. When the material below the separator has formed usable compost, this compost and the separator are removed from the compost container. The top layer of composting material now falls to the bottom of the container. Fresh composting material is placed on top of the second layer until the container is full. The separator is then placed on top of this layer of composting material and the cycle is repeated.
With reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1. shows separator 1. and ventilation holes 2.
Figure 2. shows separator 1. fitted inside a garden compost container (A). The separator i. roves down the container (A). as the compost volume decreases due to the composting process.
Pegs 3. locate in holes 4., spaced down the sides of the container (A).. eparatcr 1. rests on the pegs 3..
Pegs 3. and separator 1. are lowered as space becomes available. This prevents the composting material below the separator 1. from becoming compressed and creates better air circulation.
Using a garden compost container that incorsarates a separator, means that a greater volume of material may be composted over a given period of time, than would be in a ccmparable container, without a separator.

Claims (4)

1 A separator comprising a panel that fits horizontally within a garden compost container its purpose being to allow fresh compost to be deposited into a garden compost container, as the volume of the first layer of garden compost material decreases due to composting action.
2 A separator as claimed in claim 1 wherein pegs pertrude through the garden compost container to support the separator and prevent same from compressing the lower layer of composting material.
3 A separator as claimed in claim 1 and 2 wherein ventilation holes in the separator allow air to circulate the garden compost container.
4 A separator substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing.
