Abstract

A drip tray for a container, e.g. a paint tin, comprises a base portion extended to form a liquid retaining portion, the base portion being formed with an upstanding engagement means for engaging the base of a container and the peripheral edge of the liquid retaining portion being curled over such that if the tray is tilted or inverted the liquid is retained. The engagement means may be a continuous or discontinuous rim receiving channel for gripping the rim on the container base or may be a continuous sleeve into which the container is push fitted, the sleeve or channel having a curved outer surface to guide the liquid from the container wall towards the curled over peripheral edge. <IMAGE>

Description

DESCRIPTION - DRIP TRAY This invention relates to a tray for catching drips from liquid or semi-liquid substances.
Reason for invention All liquids in containers will drip down a peripheral wall given a chance. Paint, varnish, primers, creosotes and all other decorating or preservations substances can end up staining carpets, furniture, clothes and any other items it comes into contact with.
Invariable paint drips that go unnoticed will end up on the bottom of a shoe and imprints can end up all over a house of office. The tray has been designed and invented to catch those drips that roll down the sides of containers thus avoiding the unwanted mess, danger, damage and extra work involved in clearing it up.
The tray will be preferably made from types of plastics, but would not exclude metals or other appropriate materials.
According to the present invention there is provided a drip tray comprising a first base portion, a wall portion extending around a peripheral region of the base portion, and an engagement means extending from the wall portion or the base portion, which engagement means is adapted to engage a container on the base portion. This engagement is so designed to either fit the rim on a tin or container or to friction-fit for non-tin containers with plain bottoms.
Preferably, the engagement means extends upwardly from the first base portion. The engagement means may, in a preferred embodiment, surround and be adapted to engage a lower portion of the container. The engagement means may be in the form of one or more rim-receiving channel, which channel is capable of receiving and gripping a rim on the base of the container. Thus, the engagement means may be continuous or discontinuous. The rim receiving channel may be circular or follow the same shape as the container or rim of the container. In an alternative embodiment, the engagement means may be in the form of a projection extending from the tray, which projection cooperates and engages a groove in the lower portion of the container. In an alternative embodiment, the engagement means may be in the form of a sleeve into which a tin, container or bottle can push fit and be held by the inner wall of the sleeve.
In a preferred embodiment, the engagement means comprises a liquid-guiding means, which is capable of guiding liquid towards the walled portion.
Preferably, the walled portion extends to form a liquid-retaining portion, which liquidretaining portion is capable of retaining a liquid when the drip tray is tilted or inverted.
The first base portion is preferably larger than the surface area of the base of the container. The drip tray may, in a preferred embodiment, further comprise a second base portion, which second base portion is capable of receiving liquids that escape from the first base portion.
The drip tray is preferably detachable from the container.
